Dark-Skinned Blacks at Hiring Disadvantage, New Data Reveals

What differentiates two candidates of color for a job? It's not always the résumé. In many cases, skin tone makes the difference, according to University of Georgia (UGA) doctoral student Matthew Harrison, who conducted the first study of the impact of skin tone in the workplace.

Harrison conducted the study with 240 psychology undergraduates at UGA. Each participant received one of two résumés that varied by educational and work experience. Along with the résumés, the participants received one of six pictures of candidates, all black, who varied by skin tone and gender. They then were asked to rate the candidate as a job applicant and to say how likely they would be to hire the applicant themselves.

Harrison found that dark-skinned blacks are at a significant disadvantage when it comes to employment. Even when they have higher educational attainment and more qualified résumés, participants were inclined to select their light-skinned counterparts.

"I think the ratings given are a source of the expectations our society has for those who have light skin versus those who have dark skin," Harrison said. "Additionally, I think that for women, the ratings are linked to [white perceptions of] attractiveness, which is linked to competency, and for men, I believe the media images of the violent or threatening black man create a different level of comfort around black men depending on the skin tone."

It's a safe bet that brown-skinned men with tattoos all over are at a significant hiring disadvantage to the average black guy. Let's do a study about this instead.

Blacks are probably the most racist in this regard

They certainly are, known for their fine discriminations of skin tone and hair color among themselves. The lighter the better as far as I've been able to determine. BTW, I always wondered what "redbone" meant. Used to be a good band by that name.

Sounds like the conclusion is that psychology majors are racist. Not surprising, given today’s left.

"Additionally, I think that for women, the ratings are linked to [white perceptions of] attractiveness, which is linked to competency...

Hmm. This I agree with. In the large and small organizations I’ve worked with, I’ve noticed that a cute girl gets any job she wants, regardless of competence.

I prefer a study on attitude, expectations and commitment to doing a good job...

I think that is the best indicator of how any person will work out in a job...I've hired my share of white, black and asian people and that's the common thread it really had nothing to do with race or ethnicity.

That being said a man or woman who has "shocking" or obviously attention drawing features that are not naturally occuring tend to have more issues getting the better jobs...unless of course it's the Pamela Anderson type of non naturally occuring features.

I thought "redbone" was reffering to a breed of hound.

Redbone is a designation for a mulatto, usually in the South, that is a mix of black, white, and/or Native American.

"Dark-Skinned Blacks at Hiring Disadvantage, New Data Reveals"

IIRC, there was an episode of Oprah that showed that even blacks discriminate
in a graphic way.

I may get this backwards, but...
They had footage of a black doorman that refused to ring in a black person...
but then rang them in after make-up artists made the same person "white".

(It may have been gone the other direction...a white person made "black";
but the point was that even a black person discriminated on basis of skin tone.)

Psychology majors aren't mainstream enough to constitute a reasonable sample population. Psychologists, as a group, aren't as well hinged as the great unwashed whom they seek to help.

Well, honestly, blacks are the worst perpetrators of this form of discrimination. Whites usually don't make the distinction between light-skinned blacks and dark-skinned ones. Hey, I've been black all of my life (yeah, seriously, no kiddin!!!!) and have ONLY witnessed this from fellow blacks. Stupid, but reality.

My racist cat kills more starlings than doves. Who do I see about that?

My racist cat kills more starlings than doves.

Well, now, let's analyze this ...

An invading flock of starlings presents a larger selection target than a pair of doves [mated for life] who are probably watching out for each other [cooing to each other as signals of approaching danger]. Smart cat, smart doves, stupid starlings perhaps? Nawww ... it couldn't be that simple, could it?

If you look like you run a street gang, don't even bother. Otherwise, my company doesn't care. Just look civilized and talk and communicate well in English and know something about physics and advanced math. And pass a drug screening and an FBI background check for a clearance. That's all:)

Someone had to do a study to figure this out? It is the same for all dark-skinned groups. Try being dark-skinned in Mexico; you will have to go to America to get a job.

"Hey, I've been black all of my life (yeah, seriously, no kiddin!!!!)"

LOL!! I'm just your local white dude. You are right! I don't even care to notice until somebody brings the issue up. So I will tell you I work with a guy from Eritria whose skin is the same color as black ink, and so are his daughters who are going to UCLA. Color doesn't mean much among real men who depend upon each other.

So I talked with him about this once. He was surprised at the race-consciousness around this country. He is correct to say it's for political reasons. In East Africa, men are men and women are women. That's all.

They are not democrats. They will not accept government hand-outs. They are too proud to.

As someone who works in a 90% minority workplace, you are correct. I see blacks making comments such as this all the time.

You got that right. I could have told this brother about this crap 20 years ago when I was still in elementary school. Yes, it started that early for me. I say around 4th grade or so. Mainly from other blacks. When the white kids saw the black kids always attacking my dark skin color, (calling me blackie, spook, ghost, darkie, etc.) then they started with the same insults. Well, the black kids were doing it and giving them a license to continue the abuse. I had a horrible childhood in this aspect. What I could not understand is that even the dark skinned boys did it to me (and a couple of other girls) That one is still blowing my mind. People tell me to get over it and that was then and this is now. For the most part I have gotten over it (Thank God) and I don't harp on it, but it does come up from time to time (like this study) and it is still happening. Yes, this is just a bunch of students, but they are representative of the real world. We do this to ourselves. Let's get a clue and stop this craziness! By the way, that doesn't mean that racism isn't alive and well. We just need to get a clue and treat one another with respect as fellow human beings.
