Men may have developed a psychology that makes them particularly able to engage in wars, a scientist said on Friday.
New research has shown that men bond together and cooperate well in the face of adversity to protect their interests more than women, which could explain why war is almost exclusively a male business, according to Professor Mark van Vugt of the University of Kent in southern England.
"Men respond more strongly to outward threats, we've labeled that the 'man warrior effect'," he told the British Association for the Advancement of Science meeting.
"Men are more likely to support a country going to war. Men are more likely sign up for the military and men are more likely to lead groups in more autocratic, militaristic ways than women," he added.
Van Vugt said the finding is consistent with results from different behavioral science disciplines.
In experiments with 300 university men and women students, Van Vugt and his team gave the volunteers small sums of money which they could either keep or invest in a common fund that would be doubled and equally divided. None of the students knew what the others were doing.
Both sexes cooperated in investing in the fund. But when the groups were told they were competing against other universities, the males were more eager to invest rather than keep their money while the number of women contributing remained the same.
"We all know males are more aggressive than females," Van Vugt said, adding that co-operation is needed to establish institutions and governments and to wage wars.
"Male co-operation is a double-edged sword," he added.

"Fairly surprised this got through Reuters' filters. Just another bit of evidence of the plain truth that men should be on the front lines of battle, while women should be the ones they are fighting for."
It isn't a matter of what should be, it is a matter of what is.
Only a powerful government can enforce an unnatural order.
As far as women go, biker women are the toughest women around, now go into a biker bar, the women aren't dominate at all, as long as there are no armed men, or lawsuits to enforce artificial behavior, nature is displayed and in the natural world, men impose whatever order the have decided on.
Um, duh?
Before guns were invited there was no question of which gender was the warrior. Superior strength was needed to weild weapons like swords and longbows. Todays weapons have convineced some that women should be in combat because either can pull a trigger. However there are many times when a soldier must rely on strength in battle and he doesnt need to be worried about protecting the female placed there with him. Nor does he need the added pressure of waking up in the morning with a priapism and a desire to use it. You cannot place normal male and female together and not expect fornication. It isnt natural.
oh man that time cover with halfbright and Jarjar binks, how appropriate.
PLEASE! PLEASE! Post a warning..."My eyes, my eyes"...lol
I basically learned the same thing in grade school.
Duh. This is news? Thanks to PC overwhelming "free speech" in this country, obvious facts have to be presented in the context of a study.
Damned be PC!
I would think this would fall under the "no $hit Sherlock" category. Now, anyone mess with my family, especially my children, and watch me turn on the mama warrior effect. :)
But when she had the chance to get him, Maddie nixed going after bin Laden as that might 'destabilize things'. Maddie the big thinker. How does she sleep at night.
The "study" is a typical popular psychology "study" in which an experiment is done with a few college students, numbers are collected and a conclusion is drawn, to great fanfare, which has nothing to do with the silly-ass experiment.
The conclusion is valid, but the means of producing it is ridiculous.
This research appears to be based on the false premise that males and females are identical.
I think the American revolution was initially fomented by someone other than the guys but that the contribution was, by nature, invisible.
Blessings on the hand of women! Fathers, sons, and daughters cry, And the sacred song is mingled With the worship in the sky-- Mingles where no tempest darkens, Rainbows evermore are hurled; For the hand that rocks the cradle Is the hand that rules the world.

"Woody" would be more appropriate in this context;-)
Women relate
I think this explains the liberal male.
Liberalism explained PING
