KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan President Hamid Karzai presided over the official opening of a new Coca-Cola plant in Kabul on Sunday, more than 10 years after the previous Coke facility in the capital was destroyed in the country's deadly civil war.
Karzai praised the plant's developer, Habibullah Gulzar, for investing $25 million to build the facility, which has provided 350 jobs and can annually produce 15 million 24-bottle cases of the soft drink.
"This is another step forward for economic growth, self-sufficiency and better living standards for Afghanistan," Karzai said during an inauguration speech at the plant in Kabul's eastern suburbs.
The Afghan president said he hoped the new Coke plant would serve as a catalyst for further private investment to boost his country's ailing economy, which is heavily reliant on foreign aid.
A smaller Coca-Cola production facility in Kabul's western suburbs was destroyed during the 1992-96 civil war, which killed more than 50,000 people in the capital.
Coca-Cola cannot be tolerated under Sharia law. When pouring the carbonated beverage, occasionally a "head" will form that bears a distant resemblance to the Arab symbol for "Allah." That is blasphemy. Someone must be beheaded and the factory bombed.
good to see positive things happening there; some of the stuff you read here does have the effect of making me wonder whether its worth it.
Given Afghanistan's current cash crop, maybe they'll expand their lineup and allow Coke to return to its original formula?
"Afghan leader christens Coca-Cola plant"
Christens?
Globalism by gun! [hoot]
Another evil corporation with no national loyalty making a difference.
Coke is destroying Afghan sovereignty. I hope they don't use HFCS, wouldn't want to poison the population.
The original formula had opium in it?
Careful. There are many here who'll think that you're being serious. As a matter of fact, hedgetrimmer is one of them. No surprises there.
At least they'll have someone/something to blame when they all become obese.
Who will they have to answer to now?
