U.S. schools compete for Saudi students

"MANHATTAN, Kan. - Thousands of students from Saudi Arabia are enrolling on college campuses across the United States this semester under a new educational exchange program brokered by President Bush and Saudi King Abdullah."

"The program will quintuple the number of Saudi students and scholars here by the academic year's end."

" By January, U.S. government officials say the program will expand to 15,000 students, which means Saudi Arabia will send more foreign students to the U.S. than Mexico or Turkey. As funding for the scholarship program expands, those numbers are likely to grow."

" So, as Kansas State students enjoy a string of home football games this month, they also are preparing for the campus' first celebration of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month."

" But some officials say efforts to fast-track educational diplomacy with Saudi Arabia could use additional scrutiny. Clark Kent Ervin, a former inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security, says the U.S. government has yet to ensure proper safeguards are in place to do effective background checks on all applicants."

Don't sweat it. It's not like they're letting Iraqis in. Just the same folks who flew those planes into the World Trade Center.

That word, funding, often makes me nervous. Hopefully, we will not be carrying any of the freight on this one.

If 19 Americans hijacked planes and flew planes into their buildings, I wonder if they would let Americans in their lands....

This is one of my biggest complaints with Bush. I know I harp on the border issue a lot with regard to illegal immigration, but there's also the issue of us letting folks come here en mass from terrorist states. Although Saudi Arabia is not classified as such, it's Wahabbi (sp?) sect is anything but pro Western nations.

I read an article not long ago talking about plans to have 20,000 Saudis in the United States to persue an education. Well, I've seen what only 19 of their students can do, and I'm not buying the justification for this.

This does cause me to ask if we're serious about wiping out terrorism, or even protecting the homeland.

What could Bush say if another Saudi team attacked the U.S.? The really bad thing is that conservatism would take it on the chin, not just Bush. We are in charge now. I think we're taking too many chances and it's very likely going to rise up and kick us in the seat of the pants.

taking positions in colleges AMERICAN students won't.

We are now educating everyone but Americans, Isn't that nice.

Just turn away our own students in favor of foreign students.

Insanity! But then who doesn't know the liberal educational establishment that currently runs the Universities would do anything for big bucks, it's the one arena where prostitution is still a highly respected profession.

19 Americans didn't and i'd wager they still wouldn't let us study at their schools in big numbers.

I certainly don't get it. After 9/11, I expected a whole bunch of foreign nationals here on student visas to be given the heave-ho. But nope. Just a big can of whoop-ass when it comes to watching us, goofy policies at airports, and a whole bunch of politicking.

Probably, as long as they weren't jews. Even today a jew cannot enter Saudi. I've heard that if you have a Isreali stamp in your passport you also can't enter.

Too bad these colleges aren't competing to let Americans in.

They should all be required to wear electronic ankle bracelets and be monitored constantly. First thing they'll do is apply for drivers licenses. This story didn't mention how they plan to ensure that these students actually show up for classes. Their government is bribing our government to allow them into our country. We are terminally stupid.
