Poland remembers 9/11
Poland marks the 5th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks with solemn ceremonies in many towns and cities.
Michal Kubicki reports
11/09.06
In Warsaw, the citys acting mayor Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz and the US ambassador Victor Ashe laid wreaths at the memorial in tribute to the six Poles who lost their lives in the attacks. They also opened an exhibition of two prominent photographers, from Poland and the United States, entitled New York before and after 9/11. In Suwalki, northeastern Poland, the school friends and teachers of Lukasz Milewski, one of the victims, met at his symbolic grave. £ukasz worked on the 105th floor of the World Trade Center.
In Kielce, some 150 kilometers south of Warsaw, the 5th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks has been commemorated in a special way.
The idea was put forward by the City Council of Kielce in the spring of 2005. It was eventually decided to erect a memorial not only in tribute to the victims of 9/11 but also as a voice of protest against all actions resulting from prejudice and xenophobia. The Mayor of Kielce Wojciech Lubawski says that his town, as a place which was put through a number of ordeals rooted in the totalitarian ideologies of fascism and Stalinism, if only to mention the 1946 pogrom of a group of its Jewish residents, has a duty to raise a voice of protest any time innocent people are killed.
The project, known as the Homo Homini Memorial, has won the support of the US Embassy in Warsaw. Deputy Political Counselor David Morrif:
We were very moved emotionally and very grateful that the people of Kielce would want to erect such a monument. Its a wonderful tribute. We appreciate greatly the fact that still five years after the horrific events of September 11, 2001, so many of our friends in Poland and in other countries continue to commemorate with us these events. Its a wonderful thing to know that we have these friends.
A letter to the Mayor of Kielce and the city residents was addressed by President George W. Bush.
I appreciate those involved with the Homo Homini Memorial for your efforts to preserve the legacy of these innocent lives. Your good work promotes mutual understanding among nations and helps build a more hopeful world for our children and our grandchildren.
In his letter, the President also referred to the warm bonds between Poland and the United States.
The memorial was designed by Adam Myjak, one of Polands leading sculptors. It is in the shape of two towers, one leaning against the other.
Artur Sobolewski of the City Council in Kielce says that the unveiling ceremony has generated great interest among the citys residents.
There is a huge interest in the Kielce community in the ceremony. This is because of the idea which is international and in a way it is also connected to the history of the city, to the year 1946, when a pogrom of some people from the Jewish community took place in Kielce. The interest is also generated by the concert which takes place after the unveiling ceremony.
The concert features a Polish premiere of the Book of September Psalms, an oratorio by Polish composers Piotr Rubik and Zbigniew Ksi¹¿ek. It is one of numerous concerts commemorating the 9/11 attacks. In Warsaw the top star of an open-air concert under the motto 9/11 for New York is the internationally renowned Polish jazzman Michal Urbaniak, who spent many years in the States and was in New York five years ago.

'God Bless Poland' - Amen to that.
Poland has their act together - can't say that about France.
We have good friends in Poland.
Dziekujemy bardzo, Polska.
">God Bless them. A voice of reason in Central Europe. The Poles I came in contact with in Iraq were all business. Unemcumbered by many of the ROE's we were hadcuffed with, they took no prisoners.
Frankly, for me, we have friends in Britain and Poland - we don't NEED the rest of Europe.
Oh, and I think it's about time we moved Ramstein to Warsaw.

May God bless Poland abundantly.
Proving to be one of our strongest allies.
Well gee, was it because of Poland's ME policies that these 6 Poles had to die in the Towers? Surely that ought to follow through as "logic" for the moonbats. (/sarc)
Solemn prayers for these people so tragically murdered by islamic terrorists on our soil. Prayers for their families.
Poland has been a superb ally, long may she live in freedom.

God bless Poland, my grandmother's homeland!!
What a beautiful tribute; that warms my heart to read. Thanks for the ping, prairie.
I think that's an awesome memorial structure. Shows the heinous nature of the attack, doesn't sanitize it.
I appreciate the sentiment, but I see that you're plagued by modern "art" too.
Every year that goes by I get more and more angry that that valuable real estate is left to sit empty. Since we can't get the 9/11 families to agree, how can the leftists ever complain that we don't try diplomacy and talking to the very people who want to kill us?
Anyway, I'd love to see the WTC's re-built as a poke in the eye to the jihadists.
One floor taller, of course!
Of course!
God bless our friends!
