Florida, Orlando among top places to live

A new Harris Poll shows that Florida has become a slightly less-popular state for Americans to live in, while Orlando's popularity climbed into the top 15 cities for living.

Florida has fallen a notch to become the third-most-popular state U.S. adults would choose to live in if they could live in any state outside of their own.

The top-ranked state is California, which has been No. 1 for the last four years. Next up was Hawaii, which flip-flopped spots with Florida.

The rest of the top 10 most-popular states people said they would like to live in were:

* North Carolina, No. 4, up from a tie for No. 8 the year before

* Texas, No. 5, also moving up from No. 8 the year before

* Washington, No. 6, moving up from No. 11

* Colorado, No. 7, dropping from No. 4

* New York, No. 8, dropping from No. 5

* Arizona. No. 9, dropping from No. 6

* Oregon, No. 10, dropping from No. 7

When Harris Poll asked respondents their favorite U.S. city to live in or near, the only Florida area to make the top 15 was Orlando, at No. 14. The city ranked too low to be included in the top 14 the year before, but was No. 12 the year before that.

The No. 1 U.S. city in the ranking was New York City. Following it, in order, were San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle and Las Vegas.

Harris put its survey's sampling error at plus or minus 2 percentage points.

The poll was conducted online with U.S. citizens between Aug. 8-17. Harris surveyed 3,685 adults and weighted the results for age, sex, race, education, region, online presence and household income to be proportional with the population.

I went to a Navy school in Orlando. Can't say I cared much for the place. Everything seemed like a facade for tourists and the weather was humid beyond words. I'll stick with Arizona.

I used to live in a big city and now I live in a tiny town. The culture shock was big and scary, but now you'd have to drag me back kicking and screaming! :)

My vote for the best city in the US is..... TinyTownUSA!

Not surprised to see N Carolina listed as number 4. Every time I drive through there, it seems more crowded than the last. Sometimes it seems as if half the State of Florida has relocated there.

I haven't seen every state, but my belief is that all have true beauty. Even New Jersey.

If yer gonna go fer Florida, then Sanibel/ft myers is nice as is St Augustine. I have a friend who loves Fernandina Beach. Gulf Shores is great, but a hurricane magnet. I wouldn't want to live in Miami if I could double my income.

I'm in a "tiny town" as well and can't imagine living anywhere else. When I need a fix, Chicago's the ticket.

Orlando scored so high because four out of five Democrats say they are happy living in Disneyworld...

Wow. I live 10 minutes from downtown Orlando..and can say there are some positive reasons for living here- but I would never think of it as one of the TOP places to live in the US.

"Sometimes it seems as if half the State of Florida has relocated there."

The last two resales in my neighborhood were to Floridians. The one before that, Californian. This is over the past two years. Before that, it had been years since anyone had put their house on the market.

Nothing like honking and shooting!

Have they found the SOB who shot that man?

Sometimes I think that the "Weekly World News" gets all of its stories from Florida. And I do mean "stories."

As a native North Carolinian, I can appreciate why people want to move here. We have beautiful mountains, lovely seashores, scenic parkways, good highways, and some pretty decent big cities.

Can't imagine living anywhere else (although Penn. Dutch Pennsylvania was mighty beautiful).
