Russian artist Zurab Tsereteli presented "Grief Tear" to USA
The "Grief Tear" Memorial to the victims of 9/11 terrorist attacks made by Russian artist and sculptor Zurab Tsereteli opened to state anthems of Russia and the USA in Bayonne, New Jersey, on September, 11.
The "Grief Tear" Memorial, situated on the bank of the Hudson River, is a split 30-meter bronze plate with a giant tear made of titanium. The names of almost 3 thousand people killed on September, 11, 2001, are engraved on the monument. The memorial is the gift of Russian people, so Zurab Tsereteli and his colleagues took all the expenses on its erection up.

Hey, you missed a Russian thread!
Fantastic! And very appropriate...
It is a very somber, yet inspiring monument (gift)...
I just saw this, and am very thankful I found FR a few years ago...
I doubt we would have ever heard about this anywhere else...It almost makes me feel better for some reason, theres just something about the image that invigorates me, makes the pain less prominant in my mind...
Maybe some day when everything gets worked out...Ground Zero will be a compliment to this memorial and bring the same sense of closure, yet inspiration that we beat this thing called terrorism!
The same sculptor made a giant Stalin monument for downtown Moscow, but they didn't want that one either.
I posted it because I'm so tired of hearing hate America all the time. This is a beautiful gesture from the Russians and I am proud to - promote - it. I'm disappointed that I didn't see it on tv or in the paper...but I guess it doesn't suit the MSM agenda.
Thanks for that information. Jersey City, eh. I wonder why they didn't want it.
Because it blocked the view, according to an article I read.
It is significant in both size and sentiment. I am truly touched by this.
Maybe the Stalin would have been accepted if it had shoes glued to its face.
Oh, you mean they objected because they couldn't profit from the structure. Condos, company headquarters, performance centers....now there's the ticket to a higher use of view. Shame on them.
Unfortunately for me I was introduced to FreeRepublic on 9-11-01 by a co-worker who is also a Freeper. I've been hooked ever since.
I'm speechless. What a wonderful gift.
OMG, it's magnificent. Why weren't we told that the Russian people gave us this gift?
It IS a wonderful gift that can't be ignored.
Magnificent, indeed.
But, you know why...it doesn't fit the hate America agenda.
Bayonne BUMP!
Putin himself came last year to present it. It was a pretty big day for good old Bayonne. A very patriotic town, I must say. Esp. for the NY Metro area. Clean, and patriotic, bayonne is OK.
It's the thought that counts.
Damn, that is one freakin' ugly heartfelt gift! And have to drag it out of the garage every time sweet old Aunt Mildred comes over.
Why ever not? It is a stunning work, and much more attractive than what usually passes for public art these days.
Wow, that is beautiful.
I am incensed that our media didn't report this. I'll bet that the Russians feel the same way.

A magnificent sculpture. I don't understand why this gift did not rate more news coverage. Thanks much for the ping.
BTTT
Sending thanks to the Russian people.

ping to a nice gift from Russia.
Magnificent, poignant tribute!
Well, it did get a lot of coverage here in Jersey. The whole story, from JC changing it's mind (there's more controversy now over whatever their new memorial is supposed to be) to Bayonne accepting it, etc. My daughter actually got stuck in a "frozen zone" the day Putin came. I wish I could have gone to that, but it was during working hours.
We in Jersey are used to being ignored by the NY/National media. But I'm very proud of Bayonne for taking the memorial, I think it is very nicely done. There were quite a few people from here who died, including two women going on vacation who were killed on one of the planes.
Thanks for posting this thread so more people can find out about this.
bump that. hadn't heard of this -- thanks for posting.
wow. nice placement.
We're planning to visit the new monument in a couple of weeks while visiting NYC.
