Serbia: Striking a Deal with Washington on Kosovo

Summary

The United States appears to be attempting to strike a deal with the Serbs over the future of Kosovo and the Serbian government. The ultimate success of the deal is a long shot, but it is the best middle-ground option presented yet.

Analysis

Serbian President Boris Tadic visited the United States on Sept. 5-6. Serbian newspaper Blic reported Sept. 13 that, during his visit, Tadic was told that if Serbia can turn wanted war criminal Ratko Mladic over to the International Criminal Court in The Hague by November, the U.N. decision on Kosovo's independence from Serbia would be postponed until after the Serbian parliamentary elections expected in 2007.

The significance of this offer requires a bit of explanation.

During Tadic's stay in the United States, he met with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Vice President Dick Cheney and various senators. In those meetings, Tadic emphasized the standard Serbian line that independence for Kosovo would threaten Balkan security and stability. Serbia wants anything except Kosovo's independence, and Kosovo wants nothing but independence. Tadic made it no secret that he was actively campaigning for Washington's support in preventing Kosovo from gaining its independence, and it appears that the United States could have taken note.

Why should Serbia trust the US?

Who bombed Serbia and did their best to take Kosovo away from Serbia?

Who put the muslim Albanian drug runners in power in Kosovo?

The United States appears to be attempting to strike a deal with the Serbs over the future of Kosovo and the Serbian government.

USA did "strike a deal" with the Serbs in 1999. Serbian police and troops had to leave Kosovo for a limited time and then return and Russians were to be part of international force.

Next "deal" is to give complete control over Kosovo to Muslims.

>>>>>>Why should Serbia trust the US? <<<<<

The Serbs are living proof that being American enemy is dangerous and being American friend is fatal.
