Financially strapped Air America Radio, after star commentator Al Franken said his paycheck had stopped coming, acknowledged Thursday that it had laid off a few employees but insisted it has no plans to declare bankruptcy.
"If Air America had filed for bankruptcy every time someone rumored it to be doing so, we would have ceased to exist long ago," Jaime Horn, a spokeswoman for the liberal talk show network, said in a statement. "It may be frustrating to some that it hasn't happened."
Horn, without getting specific, said there were "a handful of layoffs" that followed a move of the network's New York outlet from WLIB-AM to WWRL-AM, a station with a less powerful signal. The network launched in March 2004.
Franken, broadcasting Thursday from New York, said he was aware of the bankruptcy rumors. "We may or may not, that's what I'm hearing," Franken said at the start of his noon broadcast. But he assured listeners that the financial problems wouldn't silence the network.
"Let me say one thing; if we do go into bankruptcy I've flown on United (Airlines)," he said. "They went into bankruptcy."

Franken, in a recent interviews, said the network was suffering from "a cash flow problem." "No cash has been flowing to me," [said] FrankenA decently funny line. I guess he really was a comedian at one point in time!
To: SmithL
Hmmm . . . their top-billed "talent" admits, on the air, that they cannot make payroll - but they claim they won't need to seek bankruptcy protection.
OK.

We're not going into bankruptcy.
But - if we do - we won't lose stations.
But - if we do - we won't lay off our hosts.
But - if we do - we won't lay off Al Franken.
But - if we do - we won't scam a charity for more money.
But - if we do -------
Yada - yada -yada.

Reading quotes from some of their investors yesterday, some prosecutions would not surprise me. Investors were talking about how they had no communications from the company for months, that they had no idea what was going on, and that they certainly weren't going to put more money into it. Even a Soros must know when he is getting nowhere...he gets a bigger bang for his buck from MoveOn than he does from Err America.

Rush just explained today on his extended internet broadcast - the 4th hour, where he spent his money instead rather than buying Err America.
Given that it is a subscription only broadcast, I am only ripping myself financially if I reveal what he said.
You can sign up today and possibly be able to hear the 4th hour. Plus, you may also be helping reduce subscription increases in the future thereby help your fellow man--me.... and... cultivate a value Rush likes to instill in people.
Thanking U in advance since U imply your checks always clear......

I should start my own radio network.
First, I will raise some money from investors or from publicly supported charities.
Then, I will hire myself as an employee and broadcast my ideas about how to run the world. I will pay myself an annual salary which is twice the amount of money raised from investors.
When the network is out of money and can't pay me, I will simply donate my time for a while in order to generate sympathy for my plight.
Finally, when the network is forced into bankruptcy by unpaid vendors and suppliers, I will join them in claiming my share of any non-existent assets. Of course, I won't collect anything, but I have enjoyed my pay as long as the initial funding lasted.
What a country!
