CIA agent's naming led to giant hoax by Bush foes

Fred Barnes

September 15, 2006

THE rogues' gallery of those who acted badly in the CIA "leak" case turns out to be different from what the media led us to expect. Note that we put the word "leak" in quotation marks, because it's clear now that there was no leak at all, just idle talk, and certainly there was no smear campaign against former US ambassador Joseph Wilson for criticising President George W.Bush's Iraq policy. It's as if a giant hoax were perpetrated on the country - by the media, by partisan opponents of the Bush administration, even by several Bush subordinates who betrayed the President and their White House colleagues. The hoax lingered for three years and is only now being fully exposed for what it was. Let's start at the top of the rogues' list:

Richard Armitage, the deputy secretary of state under Colin Powell, was the first to reveal that Wilson's wife was a CIA employee. He blabbed carelessly to Bob Woodward of The Washington Post, then to columnist Robert Novak, who mentioned it in a July 2003 column. Armitage, after admitting this to the FBI in October 2003, stood by silently year after year as Vice-President Dick Cheney, Cheney's chief of staff, Scooter Libby, Karl Rove and other White House officials were blamed for what he had done, and Bush suffered politically.

Loyalty is not Armitage's strong suit.

Someone might consider a citizen's arrest of Patrick Fitzgerald.

What's left to do? Fitzgerald, in decency, should terminate his probe immediately. And he should abandon the perjury prosecution of Libby, the former Cheney aide. Libby's foggy memory was no worse than Armitage's.

Last but not least, a few apologies are called for, notably by Powell, but also by the press. A correction - perhaps the longest and most overdue in the history of journalism - is in order.

Great summation!

It was a deliberate betrayal by Armitage and Powell of the President

I'll go ahead and say it. It was a plan by some dims in Congress, and Joe Wilson, and Armitage and maybe Powell to hurt the President with this. They risked national security to try to defeat Bush. We know the dims motivation. Powell and Armitage, Armitage adores Colin, and Powell wants to be President. Powell looked for a dim win in 04, and he knew the disaster that would be, and he figured he could ride into town as the savior in 08.

General Powell lost credibility when he urged President George H.W. Bush to end the first Gulf War after the "highway of death"... Another day or two and Saddam would have been toast at the hands of his own Generals. (of course 41 did not have to take Powell's advice either).

Exactly where is Patrick Fitzgerald? Why has no one in the media asked him to explain any of this?

An AP reporter tried a few days ago. Fitzie's office would not comment.

I think all this goes to show is that you can be labeled republican, democrat, conservative, or liberal but it doesn't define a person's character. Armitage and Powell sold the very people that they were suppose to serve up the river, knowing full well the so-called outing of Plame was all a lie. Rarely will you ever hear a politician or the press apologize for all the pain and suffering they bring upon people when they're in the wrong from step 1. I'm sure I'll be dead before we have politicians that truly serve the public's interests instead of whomever throws the most money at them.

[We have to go to Australia to read the truth!?!?!]

That was my first reaction too. Australia got to see the "uncut" version of the "Path to 911" too. Very strange.

The whole Plame non-story is disgraceful. The American media should be falling all over themselves apologizing to everyone that they indicted in the press, especially Chrissy Matthews of "Hairball".

Powell does not not look good in this.

Hence the letter opposing the Geneva Convention definitions that President Bush is seeking.

Powell sends a letter, announced today, aligning himself with McCain opposing President Bush's plans for military tribunals.

Anything to get the news of Powell's betrayal of Bush in the Plame affair off the headlines. So , basically he betrays the President again.

The War on Terror begins with Democrats and the Liberal Media.

Terror is ineffective without the domestic sycophants and complicit political and media traitors.

Do your part: destroy Liberal Media and Democrats with extreme prejudice.
