Turkeys ruling Islamic-rooted party joined a wave of criticism of Pope Benedict XVI today, saying he would go down in history in the same league as leaders like Hitler and Mussolini for remarks he made on Islam.
The comments by Salih Kapusuz, a deputy leader of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogans party, came a day after Turkeys top cleric asked Benedict to take back recent remarks, escalating tensions before the pontiffs November visit.
The Pope made his remarks on Islam in a speech in which he quoted from a book recounting a conversation between 14th century Byzantine Christian Emperor Manuel Paleologos II and an educated Persian on the truths of Christianity and Islam.
The emperor comes to speak about the issue of jihad, holy war, the Pope said.
He said, I quote, Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached, he quoted the emperor as saying.
Benedict added, I quote, twice before pronouncing the phrases on Islam and described them as brusque, while neither explicitly agreeing with nor repudiating them.
Kapusuz told the state-owned Anatolia news agency that Benedicts remarks looked like an effort to revive the mentality of the Crusades.
Benedict, the author of such unfortunate and insolent remarks is going down in history for his words. However ... he is going down in history in the same category as leaders such as Hitler and Mussolini, he said.
His comments came despite the Vatican defending the Pope saying that the Pontiff wanted to promote respect and dialogue toward other religions.
Earlier today, Pakistans parliament unanimously adopted a resolution condemning Pope Benedict XVI for making what it called derogatory comments about Islam.

Better put the Swiss Guard on high alert.
Typical projection of guilt.

Salesian Priest, 70, Stabbed in Germany
KASSEL, Germany, SEPT. 14, 2006 (Zenit.org).- A Turk has been arrested in the stabbing of a 70-year-old Salesian parish priest who was attacked at the door of his rectory.
Police have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with the attack last Monday on Father Aloys Weber.
The Salesian International News Agency (ANS) reported the incident Wednesday, detailing that the assailant repeatedly accused the priest of being "the incarnation of evil."
On Monday afternoon, the assailant went to the door of the rectory. When Father Weber opened the door, he was stabbed three times, twice in the abdomen and once near the heart.
The Salesian was rushed to the hospital, where he was operated on. He is listed in serious condition, ANS reported.

This was Monday, prior to Benedict16's address.
Turk's have a habit of attacking priests in Turkey and elsewhere.
I don't think they follow the Amish religion.
God Bless him and pray for him. In this hour, where he will be mercilessly attacked, he needs strength.
He's the right Pope for the right era.
Amen!
The Truth hurts doesn't it?!?!
God bless the Holy Father and may He protect him.
Yes he is. I pray for his safety. God Bless the Holy Father.
That's odd. I though Hitler and the Muzzles got along well. They are both totalitarian folks.
I wish these people would be half as upset when a terrorist does something in the name of Islam.
I understand they really practice with the halberd as a close combat weapon....
There are more than a few ways for that amazing sword/spear/axe/pike/club to separate you from your well-being.... and/or the remainder of your days.
Indeed.
"Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites and deal rigorously with them. Hell shall be their home: an evil fate." (Koran 9:73)
"Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Deal firmly with them. Know that God is with the righteous." (Koran 9:123)
Isn't it amazing (grace) how that keeps happening?
Remember, these Mullahs get their education in what Sharia law says, not in any other subject ~ certainly not about the uses and limits of language.
I am worried about him. Remember what happened to Pope John Paul.
First it's Rushdie rage, then Abu Grahib rage, then it's Gitmo rage, then it's Koran rage, then it's cartoon rage, then it's newspaper rage now it's Pope rage.. Why don't these morons get jobs and join the 21st century.
ROFLMAO - isn't that the pot calling the kettle black! It is Moslems who are Hitler/Mussolini/Stalin/PolPot/Mao....
Wasn't Saddam a big fan of Hitler?
According to the CIA World Fact Book Turkey is 99.5% muslim. I never forget that when thinking of their policy decisions.

Subject: The Real History of the Crusades
The Real History of the Crusades
by Thomas Madden
"So what is the truth about the Crusades? Scholars are still working some of that out. But much can already be said with certainty. For starters, the Crusades to the East were in every way defensive wars. They were a direct response to Muslim aggressionan attempt to turn back or defend against Muslim conquests of Christian lands.
Christians in the eleventh century were not paranoid fanatics. Muslims really were gunning for them. While Muslims can be peaceful, Islam was born in war and grew the same way. From the time of Mohammed, the means of Muslim expansion was always the sword. Muslim thought divides the world into two spheres, the Abode of Islam and the Abode of War. Christianityand for that matter any other non-Muslim religionhas no abode. Christians and Jews can be tolerated within a Muslim state under Muslim rule. But, in traditional Islam, Christian and Jewish states must be destroyed and their lands conquered. When Mohammed was waging war against Mecca in the seventh century, Christianity was the dominant religion of power and wealth. As the faith of the Roman Empire, it spanned the entire Mediterranean, including the Middle East, where it was born. The Christian world, therefore, was a prime target for the earliest caliphs, and it would remain so for Muslim leaders for the next thousand years.
With enormous energy, the warriors of Islam struck out against the Christians shortly after Mohammeds death. They were extremely successful. Palestine, Syria, and Egyptonce the most heavily Christian areas in the worldquickly succumbed. By the eighth century, Muslim armies had conquered all of Christian North Africa and Spain. In the eleventh century, the Seljuk Turks conquered Asia Minor (modern Turkey), which had been Christian since the time of St. Paul. The old Roman Empire, known to modern historians as the Byzantine Empire, was reduced to little more than Greece. In desperation, the emperor in Constantinople sent word to the Christians of western Europe asking them to aid their brothers and sisters in the East.
That is what gave birth to the Crusades. They were not the brainchild of an ambitious pope or rapacious knights but a response to more than four centuries of conquests in which Muslims had already captured two-thirds of the old Christian world. At some point, Christianity as a faith and a culture had to defend itself or be subsumed by Islam. The Crusades were that defense."

Thanks. I will do it.
We could use a Churchill now. That man was a genius.
Seriousl question here, though. Are these statements GENERAL orders to be carried out for all time, or specific to a specific time and situation? I don't know the context.
Pope John Paul stood up to communism and now this Pope is standing up to islam. I say good on both of them. And yes, the rock thrown into the pack of dogs obviously found its target hehe.
I'm not enough of a scholar to answer you. But look at their conduct to see what many in that world think.
But they're a wonderful neutral democratic country, dontchaknow?
He gets my vote for "man of the 20th century". What he did in WWII was legendary but he was right on the mark from the Boer war on. The idea of Gallipoli IIRC was his. It was brilliant strategery - unfortunately like a lot of WWI the execution was seriously flawed.
Kewl!
Yes. I'm so sick of the Crusades cry. Doesn't anyone ever ask why the $#$! Moslems were in the Jews' Jerusalem? No. Moslems took over what wasn't theirs at all.
Liberals are so duplicitous. They ignore Moslem conquests but cannot stand white Americans taking over "Indian lands".
The Pope set them up. :). Nothing like taking time from blowing up oneself in the midst of a crowd of innocents to complain about the rude comments.
Pope Benidict has really surprised me. He has shown himself to be a man of extreme faith and real courage. I hope he dosen't retreat from his recent statements about the cult of Islam. He speaks the truth. I fear he now wears a target and is a marked man. Islam cultists don't like what he has said. they will try and silence the infidel. I pray they fail miserably in their efforts to silence the Pope.
The Roman Catholic Church has had its own dark period with the Inquisitions and othe unsavory acts. It is history. However, that passed on and we have worked to better the human condition since then. The Roman Catholic Church started whe Jesus Christ told Peter that "he is the Rock and upon this Rock I will build My church". Islam, otoh, started with a maniacal, pedophile, meglomaniac bent on destroying everyone that won't submit to the dictates of Islam and the destruction of everything that offends Islam. My tagline says it all.
And what I mean of course is he sent out this quotation from times past knowing full well they'de go crazy. Just helping to point out what intolerance looks and feels like.
Some god! Who is served by such followers.
Damned bigot! ;-)
Matthew 26:51-53 (New King James Version)
51 And suddenly, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
52 But Jesus said to him, Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish[a] by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?
Well a lot of Arabs think Hitler was a great guy, so is this good or bad?
These guys are clueless, aren't they?
Only when they sleep.
That would be a good reply to post #14. ;-) Even Jesus, himself being "attacked", told the others to turn away and let it happen.
Sleeping offends these first century holdovers.
Well, they DO believe Islam as all the answers to every human problem or question, and that's it. Violence.
Yep.
