Boulder Passport Fair (new rules for USA 'citizens' traveling to Mexico and Canada)
USPS postcard notice received in the mail | Monday September 17th, 2006 | ajolympian2004

I just received a notice card in the mail today informing me of the Boulder Passport Fair coming up this Saturday Sept. 23rd. The purpose of this fair is so that Americans wishing to travel to Canada and Mexico can obtain an official passport for crossing the border by vehicle or by foot.

Scanned image of the postcard notice from the USPS -

I wonder how long it will be before the same standard will apply to illegals crossing the USA border, becoming employed in the USA, etc.???

There seems to be such a high priority on making USA citizens obey the law.

That refers to this:

New Requirements for Travelers

The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future.

In the proposed implementation plan, which is subject to a period of initial public comment, the Initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines. The proposed timeline will be as follows:

January 8, 2007 - Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
January 1, 2008 - Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.
This is a change from prior travel requirements and will affect all United States citizens entering the United States from countries within the Western Hemisphere who do not currently possess valid passports. This new requirement will also affect certain foreign nationals who currently are not required to present a passport to travel to the United States. Most Canadian citizens, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and to a lesser degree, Mexican citizens will be affected by the implementation of this requirement.

I had to dig my passport out of my luggage to get into Canada in July. The border agent wouldn't take my NC drivers license as in the past. Since the DMV will give NC drivers licenses to terrorists, illegals and anybody else who will pay the fee and register to vote, it's not a bad idea to require the passport.

I think it's a good idea too. I'd like to see this kind of priority given to the problem of illegal immigration.

You have to have both parents premission for a child to get a passport. It's not a laughing matter. It's designed that way to help prevent child kidnappings, typically by a non-custodial parent in the middle of a divorce. Even if a child is travelling across the border with one parent, they still need to have a note form the other parent authorizing the border crossing. And it's to stop sicko's from crossing the border with kidnapped kids, too. Sadly, enforement on the Mexico border is lacking, but is ticht on the Canadian border.

interesting. My daughter and I crossed into Canada on our way to Nagara Falls 2 years ago. I had her passport with me in case I needed it. She was 10 at the time. The border agent asked many questions about my husband who was not with us. I thought it was strange. I must have passed because he let us through.

You got the third degree because one of the things they look for on both sides of the border is "friendly abduction" by one parent. They are really just trying to protect the child.

Nothing new here; this law was put in place two or three years ago in a completely above-board manner.

Well, I guess when I explained I was going to see my parents - his inlaws, the agent understood completely how a man may choose saving his vacation time for another occassion.

Yes, he was probably trying to determine if you and your husband were getting along and that you weren't trying to kidnap your daughter. Those people are very good at spotting suspicious border crossers. It's what they do all day long and can read a person like a book.
