This stupid f***ing tax would ruin what is left of businesses in the US. Only a flat out idiot would want this tax.

This is further proof that career politicians are the downfall of all democratic republics.

Those born of the silver spoon who have never had to work for a living, run a real business or understand real life economics or the rule of unintended consequences don’t’ understand that raising taxes on producers of products cause the producers to pass those costs down to the end purchasers – us.

What an idiot!

I agree. It's wrong to automatically dismiss this idea, since it clearly (from a classical economic perspective) makes more sense to tax undesirable externalities (such as pollution) than desirable activities (such as work). A tax of this sort could be harmful if it is extremely disproportionate to the damage the pollution does, but at some scale it is entirely reasonable.

Nat a tariff. Sales tax on gas at the pump, charged on both domestic and foreign product. You wouldn't trade that for the elimination of the income tax? It's a much better method of taxation than the income tax. I wouldn't go for one without the other.

Think about this proposal...only somone who knows NOTHING about the way business works...someone who's never really worked one day in his life in a real business, could ever suggest such a crazy thing. Absolute insanity.

I understand your sentiment, but it would devastate entire industries. I find it annoying that al Reuters goes along with the CO2 = pollution nonsense. It is telling the Sore Loserman acknowledges that payroll taxes result in less pay, and that energy taxes result in less energy. Seems like Republicans ought to be pointing out those admissions.

Scientists believe global warming is caused.......

Not "some" scientists. Every wire story related to this CO2 crappola is so slanted it is written like an opinion column.

Actually, we need an idiot tax. By the last election, there are 57,000,000 or so here in the US, a far greater number than folks who actually pay any significant portion of their income in income taxes.

The bottom 50% of earners only pay 4% of the income taxes. The socialist revolution is nearly complete.

understand your sentiment, but it would devastate entire industries.

Islamists funded by oil revenues will devastate a lot more than a few industries if and when they acquire nuclear weapons with our money. Besides, many new industries will spring up as people get to keep 100% of their earnings and seek to maximize their earning capacity. Also, the pace toward developing alternative energy will be accelerated as industry seeks to avoid the high gas prices.

The oil companies are flush with cash right now. A tax isn't going to put them out of business. It will provide an incentive to capitalize alternatives. The benefits to the economy in getting rid of the income tax will far, far outweigh whatever detrimental effects come from the gas consumption tax.

We have to get out of the "us versus them" mindset and be willing to objectively evaluate proposals in order to save and advance the civilization. Al Gore getting a political "win" means nearly nothing to me in comparison to the possible benefits derived from his proposal, if he is serious. I am afraid I will cringe when I see the fine print, though.

Did anyone miss the absolute gem in this?

Gore is saying taxes penalize.

That's absolutely wonderful.

hmmmm I misread the headline....

"tax pollution" wouldn't be a bad term for the taxes that the Dems come up with

If Gore is proposing eliminating the income tax

From what little is disclosed in the article, it doesn't appear to me that Gore is calling for the elimination of the income tax, or necessarily even eliminating withholding of income taxes. He appears to be using the Commie formulation of "payroll taxes", primarily meaning Social Security and perhaps Medicare. When the Bush income tax cuts were voted in, the Democrats complained because nothing was being done about "payroll taxes". So, most likely this is just another Communist lie masquerading as a phony tax cut proposal...

I say call the bluff with a concrete proposal that makes the income tax unconstitutional and increases energy taxes to a revenue neutral level.

Me too.
