Bosnian Serb PM to be fired over independence hopes

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina-The top international administrator in Bosnia said he will fire the Bosnian Serb prime minister if he continues to speak of a secession referendum in the Serb-run half of the country.

As part of his campaign for the Oct. 1 general election, Milorad Dodik has repeatedly called for a referendum that would enable the Serb-run ministate, Republika Srpska, to secede from Bosnia-Herzegovina.

"If he continues to talk about the referendum, I will have to remove him from office," Christian Schwarz-Schilling, the international administrator, told Austrian radio in an interview Monday.

The post of international administrator was established to oversee implementation of the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement that ended the 1992-95 Bosnian war. The high representative has the right to intervene in disputes and fire government officials as high as the president if necessary to ensure the accord is followed.

The peace agreement that ended the war left the country divided into two ministates, one run by Bosnian Serbs and the other shared by the Bosnian Muslims and Bosnian Croats. Each has its own government and police force; they are linked only by joint state institutions, including the country's three-member presidency.

The campaign leading up to next month's local and national elections has been especially bitter, with politicians focusing much of their rhetoric on the country's ethnic divisions and other problems left unresolved from the war.

I wish he'd just tell us what his final solution to the Serbian problem might look like!

Amazing to me how the Europeans are 'teaching' the southern balkans peoples about 'democracy'. Not much different than a dictatorship.

It's sad that Bosnia is essentially now where it was in 1878 (i.e. under an Imperial Viceroy). It is mind-boggling. Bosnia certainly has the capacity to be a modern democratic state (which can only be worked out when all three sides are content), but it's currently nothing but a colony in the narrowest sense of the word.

The EU is doing nothing to provide at least the basis for a normal state. They're babysitting Bosnia and are ruining her chances of becoming politically mature enough to stand on its own. They preach democracy, but what they're doing in practice is something that should've been relegated to the pages of history books a long time ago.

If they continue, the $hit will hit the fan rather soon.

that is BS.....if Kosovo can gain independence so can the Serbs. Our policy in the Balkans is ill gained and self serving. We have no business in the Balkans and didn't in the first place. The Serbs need to retake Kosovo by force if need be......focusing on North Mitrovica. If an incident occurs in North Mitrovica that stirs the Albanians, there is good reason to believe we will be the ones that provokes it, to justify KFOR entering N. Mitrovica. If it happens, it will happen soon, after the UN announces an extension of talks to January 2007. Watch, hoppy, we will instigate an incident to justify violence and blame it on the Serbs.....a little birdy told me this one.......

Bosnian Serb leader refuses to rule out referendum on independence

Sarajevo- Bosnian Serb Prime Minister Milorad Dodik said again that Bosnian Serbs may seek a referendum on independence, despite a warning by the international administrator in Bosnia that he may be sanctioned for such statements, local media reported Wednesday. The international community's high representative to Bosnia, German diplomat Christian Schwarz-Schilling, said earlier this week in Vienna he might use his wide powers to remove Dodik if the Bosnian Serb premier continued to raise the spectre of a referendum.
