EVER SINCE 9/11, a dark view of Islam has been gaining currency on what might be called the Western street. This view holds that, contrary to the protestations of our political leaders — who claim that acts of terrorism are being carried out by a minority of extremists — the real problem lies with Islam itself. In this interpretation, Islam is not a religion of peace but of war, and its 1.2 billion adherents will never rest until all of humanity is either converted, subjugated or simply annihilated.

Is the war on terrorism really a "clash of civilizations"? The overreaction to Pope Benedict XVI's relatively innocuous remarks at the University of Regensburg on Sept. 12 would seem to lend weight to this alarming notion.

Max Boot turns the tables on a hackneyed concept that has bedeviled the West whenever discussing strategies to fight terror. Instead of writing another warning about the "Arab street", Boot warns Muslims about their relative silence in the age of Islamist terrorism and its effect on the "Western street". He writes in the Los Angeles Times that unless moderate Muslims start taking a much more active role against Islamism, the West will have no choice but to conclude that Islam is incompatible with peace:

One thing is for certain. The majority of Muslim based nations sure go nutzo over the smallest things that somehow even remotely can be seen to offend the asshole that started the cult and had everyone bow to his fathers allah idol after the remaining 359 idols where broken up and cast out of the kasba.
We often read the 1.2 billion number. Probably 1.19 billion of them have not the slightest education into how their cult came into being with all the details we can garner from many classic and newer works.
They are ignorant, and choose to remain ignorant. They are stuck on stupid just like many an American that has been brought up in a demoratic family environment.

Such conditions make it tough to reason with such people. Especially when so many of them live in shit holes in remote places where they have no access to the rest of the world, nor it's treasures of compiled history.
They are controlled by their local immans and other goon balls. How can one turn the tide of total ignorance in such a scenario. It is not like one could sit down perhaps with a few Saudi western educated students who at least can appreciate the world of acedemia, and understand they just may not know all there is to know. The poor bastard, draggin his ass around some filthy back street in some dirty, filthy little over crowded village in some remote location along some high mountain range simply does not have a clue to anything other then what the local imman may have to say. And most likely the majority of muslims world wide do not even know how to speak any Arabic nor read any of the various written forms. All they know are the verses they are tought to memorize by their local goon.
So how can we expect them to enter the 21 century so to speak.

“Meaningful conversations” must have a common reference core where words and concepts have similar meanings to both participants. If they don’t have similar meanings then you are mixing pineapples and pineapples. I.E. you are mixing a very sweet fruit with a high explosive fragmentation hand grenade. Yes, Virginia, the military slang for the older hand grenades was “pineapple” because of their knobby appearance.

For proof of statement pick a political term of your choice and see how it is defined here on in any collegiate level dictionary and then see how it is used over in DU.

Yes. I know of the pineapple grenade. And yes what you say is very true. Sometimes folks simply do not understand, cultures around the world are quite different. Language systems are so divers in how humans use them to communicate things.
The click of the tongue on the upper pallet is meaningless to say an english speaking American, whereas it as well as gutteral sounds etc., convey much meaning in other languages, and likewise in the written language systems, so much variance is found in how things may be interpretted.
