Is Riley presidential material? I have yet to find a candidate I like....

He was a solid US Rep. He ran on an solid Conservative platform 4 years ago. As soon as he took office, he proposed and spent his political capital on a MASSIVE tax hike! It went to the votors and failed BIG TIME! Interestingly enough, we got the increased revenues anyway from the strong economy. He has been an excellent gov since his initial disaster. He needs more years to live it down and something that can be called the "Alabama miracle" before he can go national.

As an Alabamian, I can't tell you what Riley's likely trouncing of Lt. Governor Baxley will do.

Riley's coattails will likely carry a Republican to victory in the Lt. Gov. spot, as well as a potential take over of the Senate by Republicans and a significant coalition of very conservative democrats (really, DINOs)

There were other avenues to continue the fight. At this point giving the legislature any more cash is useless. All expenditures are aimed at consolidating power FIRST, then what's best for the state SECOND. Got any idea how much money's being tossed around over gambling issue? How about the state's alchohol monopoly? Bringing it back to the thread's premise, my knock on Riley is that he hasn't had the ability to take the fight to the bad actors. I think he would at least have to make it LOOK like he was trying. As it is, he LOOKS as hamstrung as any other weak governor we've had. He has appointed some noise making AG's though...maybe they should run for higher office.

I'm hanging out here on the LEFT COAST and so proud to have been from Alabama...go Riley...just sent a photo of President Bush getting off AF1 with a huge sign saying Birmingham, Alabama on the side...beautiful sight. Nice of him to go help out Riley when Riley probably really doesn't need him but every little bit helps...
