Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed legislation Thursday to allow illegal immigrants to obtain California driver's licenses, marking the eighth consecutive year such proposals have died.
Senate Bill 1162 was a far weaker proposal than had been pushed in years past, recognizing the string of defeats and bitter political friction over the issue in an election year.
The veto marked one of dozens of actions taken Thursday by Schwarzenegger, who is racing to meet a deadline of midnight Saturday to sign or veto about 500 bills remaining on his desk.
Two high-profile bills signed by the Republican governor, Senate Bills 1655 and 1209, are aimed at attracting better teachers to low-performing schools and reducing obstacles to recruiting and hiring out-of-state instructors.
Schwarzenegger killed two measures designed to fight gay discrimination, vetoes announced three weeks after he rejected controversial legislation to ban schools from "reflecting adversely" against gays in textbooks, teaching or school activities.
The governor, in his veto message on the driver's license bill, said the measure is premature because the federal government has not yet completed regulations for its Real ID Act.
The Real ID Act, sparked partly by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, is an attempt to create a national standard for driver's licenses.
"Until the Real ID Act is implemented and the federal government adopts comprehensive immigration reform, it is inappropriate to move forward with state law in this area," Schwarzenegger's veto message said.
State Sen. Gil Cedillo, a Los Angeles Democrat who crafted SB 1162, vowed to try again next year. "The governor failed to demonstrate leadership by doing what was right," Cedillo said. "He chose instead to respond to his political base of extremists and zealots."
SB 1162 would have gone into effect only after the state received federal funding to implement the Real ID

"One Bill" Gil tries every year.
I still want to know why the phony immigrants and criminal aliens don't just use their real Mexican ID? Perfectly legal in California
Gil's like Old Faithful..
one day, he may well get his wish.
Thank goodness Congre$$ crapped out on comprehensive immigration reform this year.
It's no secret the Gub has said he'd sign the bill if "background" checks on illegals are included in federal legislation.
To the Members of the California State Senate:
I am returning Senate Bill 1162 without my signature.
This issue has been the subject of a number of prior legislative attempts. Last year I vetoed a similar measure, SB 60, because action on this issue is premature until federal regulations are promulgated to implement the REAL ID Act. We are still awaiting those regulations.
Given the potential impact of the REAL ID Act on the public safety and homeland security of Californians, members of my administration are working with the federal government to develop those regulations and secure funds necessary to implement the Act. Until the REAL ID Act is implemented and the federal government adopts comprehensive immigration reform, it is inappropriate to move forward with state law in this area.
"I still want to know why the phony immigrants and criminal aliens don't just use their real Mexican ID? Perfectly legal in California."
Of course they are.
Driver's licenses from foreign countries are permitted throughout America.
This whole BS of driver's licenses for illegals is just a way to get them in the DMV so they can go to the next window and REGISTER TO VOTE!
Thats the only REAL reason for this whole exercise!
To get illegal aliens registered to vote.
Whats extremist is proposing the same bill eight consecutive years!!!!!
Cedillo is a traitor and should be treated accordingly.
Gilbert Cedillo is idolized by the generations of illegal, Mexican immigrants and their progeny that swell California's population to the brink of an economic collapse of government.
Should California's traditional government fail under the economic demands of Mexico's poor, Cedillo would probably be elected to high public office in the emerging government as cultural considerations replace ability in the selection process.
Gilbert Cedillo will be reelected in 2006 by SEIU 660 and he'll be around for 4 more years, fulfilling his obligation to his constituents as One Bill Gil.
This DL issue is total BS.
The USA and Mexico AND SOUTH AMERICAN NATIONS are all signatories to an internations traffic rules convention.
ANYONE HOLDING A VALID DL FROM SIGNATORY NATIONS MAY DRIVE IN THE USA!!!!! As long as you license is valid in mexico, you have an international DL issued in your home country and you can drive in the USA, LEGALLY!!!
I have one so I may rent autos in other nations and drive legally.
The problem for the illegal aliens (100% of all illegal aliens are criminals) is that when stopped they show they are illegal aliens.
Especially grateful for this one ~
our car was totalled once.
Simply parked out front, and crashed
by an illegal dunce.
Arnold has consistently
denied Cedillo's try.
That doesn't stop ol "One Bill" Gil ~
he's one persistent guy!
