Sen. Kerry Campaigns in district where Fla. congressman resigned

MIAMI Senator John Kerry is in Florida today, helping a Democratic hopeful in the district where the Republican Senator abruptly resigned. Representative Mark Foley was considered a shoo-in for re-election -- until it was revealed he had exchanged raunchy E-mails with a teenage page.

Senator Kerry is headlining a fundraiser for Tim Mahoney, who may now have a better shot at winning.

Kerry says the weekend is not about Foley's resignation. He says the people in Florida will make their own decision about that.

Instead, Kerry says, the visit is about mustering support for state Democrats. Nationwide, the party needs to win a net of 15 Republican seats to regain the power lost in 1994.

Yeah, come on down John Kerry. Maybe Bill will come too. You both really help the candidates you campaign for.

Really? I didn't know that, Kerry - being the humble sort of man that he is, has never mentioned that as I recall, my goodness, what a remarkable guy! I'll bet he even got a Purple Heart and didn't say a word about it, didn't he?

What? You say he won THREE Purple Hearts?

Oh be still my fluttering, Genghis Khan-inspired heart...

I'm sure that with the events this week this is exactly what the people of this district wanted.

Ol' F'n is out there tooting his own horn again. I have a hard time believing he's a big fundraiser/crowdpleaser for some other candidate. The dems who voted for him in '04 would have voted for a trained pony rather than George Bush; they weren't voting for Kerry.

The Dem'crats had done a serious job of opposition research on this one, and they knew the facts well in advance of this bombshell being dropped. An honorable rival for the office would have called up months ago, and let Foley know this would be used, would he be willing to step aside now? Even Foley's campaign managers should have been aware of the potential for trouble.

Foley knew. He thought he could tough it out, if any of this became public. If he were a Dem'crat, and not a Republican, this sort of thing might even have been a resume enhancement. He should have been discussing this six months ago, and "taken retirement" much earlier.

But shoulda, coulda, woulda, mean zilch when you get turned out by the opposition. Consider this a hard lesson well learned, and beware the residual power that even a political party in a serious state of decline, like the Dem'crats, can still muster. Like a dying rattlesnake, their venom is still deadly.

John Kerry is a vulture circling the carcass. Hope he remembers to pick the flesh out of his teeth before he nests down for the night.

Oh,  and he spent Christmas in Cambodia

Kerry lives in a glass house, he dare not make too much of Foley's resignation.
