Austrian voters veer back to far-Right

Austrian voters swung back to the far-Right in elections yesterday with the Freedom Party and a splinter group led by Jorg Haider, the populist hardliner, gaining more than 15 per cent of the vote.

But in the preliminary results, the centre-Left Social Democrats looked to have just edged ahead of the conservative Chancellor, Wolfgang Schussel, and his OeVP party.
A grand coalition between the two leading parties is a strong possibility, but the surge in support for the far-Right parties leaves open the possibility that Mr Schussel will forge a pact with them to ensure he stays in the top job.
The Freedom Party (FPOe) split with Mr Haider, its former leader, in April last year after he announced the creation of his Alliance for the Future of Austria.
Both parties campaigned strongly on anti-foreigner and anti-European Union expansion tickets, with the FPOe, under new leader Heinz Christian Strache, moving even further Right than when it was led by Mr Haider.
Anneliese Rohrer, a political commentator, said: "People were convinced Schussel would pull it off, and that didn't work. But what is really worrying is we now have 15 per cent of the voters who are anti-foreigner, and a Freedom Party still in third place and even further to the Right."
Another country waking up shunning socialists and leftists. The world is slowly waking up to the dangers of the left and the propaganda they spew.

The moonbats in this country consider anyone who believes in limited government to be "far right".
Austria is such a beautiful and pristine place... I hope it doesn't go by the wayside with pacificst and socialists.....

the writer is disabled with PC......what he didn't have the ballz to say is that 15% have had enough crap from the moozies. My guess is that it is waaaaay over 15%.
The left has used the "Nazi" label so frequently against anyone to the right of Pol Pot that the charge is beginning to loose its force.
Haider and his ilk are NOT our friends, and the "far right" in Europe is completely different from the right here in the US. Here are some nuggets about Haider, related to his trip to visit Saddam in 2002:
"Jörg Haider, the far-right politician, defended a three-day trip to Iraq where he met with President Saddam Hussein, saying that it was a humanitarian visit and that he had contributed equipment for a blood bank. Mr. Haider called for an end to United Nations sanctions, criticized American policy toward Iraq, ridiculed President Bush's notion of an ''axis of evil'' and warned that Europe must be wary tbat the fight against terrorism does not become ''a blank check for arms policy.'' I'm pretty sure you know the rule (I pulled it from one of your posts about a month ago): the first to mention "nazis" loses.
Ping to posts 12 and 13. The Nazis and the Islamists have a long history together, going back to at least WWII. It appears that hasn't changed.
This just in: Lula in Brazil, expected to win by a landslide, has been forced into a runoff instead.
Here's Haider calling Dubya a war criminal, just a few months ago (I'm having fun with Google :)):
"He is a war criminal. He brought about the war against Iraq deliberately, with lies and falsehoods," Haider said in an interview with Austrian daily newspaper Die Presse.
