NICKEL MINES, Pa. Six people were killed by a gunman at a one-room Amish schoolhouse in Lancaster County Monday, according to the county coroner.
Several others were taken to hospitals with injuries, authorities said.
"So far, six confirmed dead, and the helicopters are pulling into (Lancaster General Hospital) like crazy," Coroner G. Gary Kirchner said.
More than one victim was also taken to Hershey Medical Center in Hershey.
Earlier, state police Cpl. Ralph Striebig said "there are a number of people dead. ... The exact number I do not know yet."
The police told FOX News that it was in fact a hostage situation and that the shooter is now killed. It's not yet known whether the shooter is among the six deaths reported by the coroner. There were at least 12 people injured, along with the deaths, police said. Not motive is yet known.
There is a news conference scheduled at the school sometime Monday afternoon.

....they should start banning schools.
This is a one room schoolhouse with first through eighth graders.
Another solution would be to stop making schools automatic victim zones by banning firearms. If some of the teachers and administrative staff were armed, there would be more of a chance that the victims could fight back.
Just terrible - really makes you wonder.
I'm so curious to see if there will be a massive student withdrawal after everything that's happened the past few days. Why are people leaving their kids in these schools?
Prayers up for those poor children and their families.
We all know that if the dims had more anti-gun laws, this never would have happened <---SARC
This is an Amish school, not a public school.
Fox news reporter talking to rep from local Hospital. He says they received 4 girls ranging from 6 to 12 years old. One expired. Heartbreaking!
this man with the gun of the hand.
Does that really make a difference? I wouldn't think so.
These are Amish who eschew the use of firearms. They would have been unarmed anyway.....sitting ducks.
FOX reported 7 hospitalized, 3 very critical
Your link could be from a different school. Trooper on TV says it's on White Oak Rd.
you know what? that's about the smartest thing I've read in some time -- as satire, it's brilliant.
Amish are non-violent, but they have guns. They are big hunters.
