NICKEL MINES, Pa.
The county coroner says at least six people were killed in a shooting at a one-room Amish schoolhouse, where state police said earlier a gunman killed "a number" of people Monday in Pennsylvania's bucolic Lancaster County.
"So far six confirmed dead and the helicopters are pulling into (Lancaster General Hospital) like crazy," Lancaster County Coroner G. Gary Kirchner said.
It was unclear if the shooter was among the six. State police Cpl. Ralph Striebig had said earlier the shooter was among the dead, and a number of people were injured.
Three girls, all critical with gunshot wounds, were admitted to Lancaster General Hospital, spokesman John Lines told WGAL-TV.
Police surrounded the one-room school late Monday morning, and the Lancaster County 911 Web site reported that dozens of emergency units were dispatched to a "medical emergency" at 10:45 a.m.
Two hours later, about three dozen people in traditional Amish clothing, hats and bonnets stood near the small school building speaking to one another, several young people and authorities. At least two ambulances had left the scene, and at least one person was taken on a stretcher to a medical helicopter.
Officials at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center confirmed that victims were being admitted there. A spokeswoman said the hospital anticipated more than one patient, but did not know how many.

What is going on with this rash of school shootings?
Is it possible that the non-stop media coverage is creating copycat shooters?

So far we don't know enough.. wash the shooter amish or not?
Given that the pacifisim is part of the Amish way of life, it would be very very weird if an Amish person committed this act.
Not impossible, but definately out of character.
To: Caramelgal
Given the Amish are pacifists by nature, I would be very shocked if the shooter was Amish.

The Amish religion and community is pacifist by nature but their youth are still subject to outside influences.
But from what Im hearing the shooter was not Amish or a student - 32-year-old truck driver from the area with some long standing grudge.

Officials said the gunman, found dead on the scene, was Charles Carl Roberts, a 32-year-old truck driver who lives nearby in Bart., Pa.
The gunman left suicide notes for his family and indicated to his wife that he was getting revenge for an incident that happened 20 years ago, Miller said.

A claper is a loser who gets his jollies harassing the Amish, knowing that they are not allowed to fight back.
The irrationality of the claper is akin to that of the anti-Semite.

I believe it is called Rumshpringa - and yes, it is a time when an Amish person is allowed to experience life outside the Amish community. After a certain number of months or years, they must make a decision... Amish life or choose to be an outsider, disowned by the community.

The Amish don't officially join the church until they marry, therefore anything that happens up to that time is forgiven. We had an Amish boy that worked on our farm and had a car, played a mandolin in a country group, had 12volt amplifiers. When he married, he sold everything.
Today he is an Amish deacon and has been an upright member of the church.

And what the Hell does that have to do with anything I said?
Did I attack Christians somehow? Did I say anything about Rosie O'Donnel or Bill Marr?
This has nothing to do with Christians, ugly angry fat lesbians, mouthy stupid commies with a cable talk show and or radical Islam? To my knowledge so far none of them has anything to do with this shooting today in Lancaster PA.
By the most recent news reports and the PA State Police news conference, the alleged perp was a local resident, a truck driver non-Amish, 32 years-old with some sort of grudge with the Amish and evidently Amish women in particular.
All I said was that religion and insularization cannot always protect us and our children from crazy people.
Get a freakin grip. It's not even a full moon yet!

Yes. It's called Rumspringer. I lived in a rural PA Amish area but never knew much about it.
I've recently been reading the book "To be or not to be Amish"
http://www.amazon.com/Rumspringa-Be-Not-Amish/dp/086547687X
Very good read so far.
The idea as I understand it is that one can only become Amish as an adult and under his or her own freewill. In order to do so, families allow the young people a time of "running around" the Rumspringer.
It is meant to expose them to the outside world and all that has to offer in hopes that they willing decide to come back and adopt the Amish way.
But sadly today the world has many more dangerous temptations than there once was. With no prior exposure, a lot of Amish kids get into drugs and sex even more so than some of the more secular kids among their peers.
In recent years there have been drug busts involving Amish kids and DWIs given to drivers of horse and buggy carriages.

There is nothing in the Caramelgal post that I see that is even remotely anti-religious.
Amish are pacifist. They are subject to outside influences. And there is nothing anti-religious about hearing that the shooter was a truck driver with a grudge and not another Amish.
Are you sure you posted to the right person?

The cynical media is out of control. In that last shooting recently (before this one), none of the news outlets could seem to shut up stressing that the teenage girls had been sexually attacked. They claim that they are above "identifying" underage rape victims, but they all but give out names. They might as well.

"Another critic of organized religion? Maybe the gunman, like Rosie O'Donnel and Bill Marr, see all religions as morally equalivelent to radical Islam."
In the PA State Police statement, the murderer's wife said that the murders were revenge for something that was done to the murderer (a milk truck driver) 20 years ago. The police did not elaborate further. [Various reports from a news search.]
