Gym Attire Seen As Latest Attempt to Force Shari'a in US

A Muslim advocacy group's successful argument that a 9th grade student from a Virginia public high school did not have to wear regulation gym attire because of her Muslim religion, has fired up a critic of Islamic radicalism.

The 9th grader at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Va., was "threatened with failing the class if she did not wear shorts," according to a statement released by the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR).

"The student's family contacted CAIR (of Maryland and Virginia) for assistance in resolving the issue. Following discussions with school officials, the student was moved to a different gym class and will be allowed to dress in attire that meets her religious needs," stated CAIR.

The group stated that initially, the girl's teacher told her "the law required that the student wear the shorts."

In light of the dispute over the gym class attire, CAIR also noted that it would conduct diversity training for Lake Braddock's newer staff, as well as "visit local middle and high schools to review their policies for accommodating the religious needs of Muslim students during Ramadan, Eid and throughout the school year."

But Daniel Pipes, a frequent critic of CAIR and the director of the Middle East Forum, told Cybercast News Service that the gym shorts are part of a "campaign" by CAIR to replace rules in the U.S.

It is a campaign "to adapt public schools in the United States to Islamic norms," Pipes said, and "is an integral part of its effort to adapt the country to the Shari'a, or Islamic law."

"Its success in getting the gym rules changed at Lake Braddock [Secondary] School, plus its success in providing 'diversity training' for school staff, have inspired it to become more bold and to 'review the policies' in other middle and high schools in an attempt to bend them too to the Shari'a," Pipes added.

This is just silly. Tell me again how many non-Muslims they forced to stop wearing shorts? Oh that's right, none.

Oh please what, tell me where I'm wrong?

You wouldn't live in Section 8 housing.. you don't want government in charge of your health care.. but you willingly hand your kids over to the state.. and make no mistake about it, that's exactly what you do 8 hours a day.

Public schooling should be the schooling of abject last resort.

My ? is does the Muslim faith allow for female gym activities?

Is school gym co-ed now a days?

And is that allowed.

I am trying to imagine her on the uneven bars (gymnastics). Impossible.

Do schools even have gym classes anymore. I thought budget woes cut them out.

I thought public schools have local school boards and aren't run by the state or the fed.

I remember those when I went to Catholic boarding school in the 50s. I remember in boy's HS hoping those shorts in front of me were on girls instead.

Remember that story about girls in Saudi Arabia being burned alive in a school fire because men wouldn't allow them to exit the building uncovered.

These people are deadly serious and must be shut down at every turn.

THAT works for me. I remember 'gym' when I was in high school (last century). We wore shorts when it was hot, sweats when it got cold, and mixes in the middle. Why can;t this girl be allowed to wear something other than the school-admin-required shorts?

IF there is a real rationale (like a team uniform) then I'll go with the school. If not, then the Libertarian in me says let her wear something else that's functional and safe.

I'm with the muzzies on this one. If a girl wants to wear more modest attire because of her religion, that ought to be OK. What would be wrong would be to make the rest of the class do the same.

Oh please.

It is now becoming self-evident. Educating your child at home is the most natural and healthy way to raise a child to a educational and emotionally sound adulthood.

Yes, some child will need factory-like institutionalization for their education. This is a shame. We need orphanages too, but no one would argue that this is the best way to raise a child.

No, just by busy bodies who dream of someday running the state or fed.. .and even when they don't must comply with every piece of drivel legisliation or judicial fiat that comes with government money.

Section 8 housing complexes have tenant boards too... Gonna move your family into one?

You are dilluding yourself.

Private education is just not an option for that much of the population. Even if it is not an economic issue, there simply are not enough seats available and while I am a fan for home schooling, I think few parents are really qualified to do that successfully.

Shorts ARE modest attire for athletics. So many freepers ride France all the time but at least the French said no to the Mohammadan fanatics on public school attire.

I remember when I was in Hillsboro HS in Nashville, the girls wore one piece short jump suits for gym. They said playing vollyball was bad in those outfits cause the one piece garment rode up when the hands were extended over the head causing CITC (Cloth In the Crack).

So all students should change to accomodate Muslims?

It does not end here FRiend, this is only the beginning.

You are already having to eat "halal" food at fast food restaurants and I bet you didn't even know that.

Your right.

Many decades ago when I was in gym the lil outfits we wore were embarrassing (I was a tiny lil thing) and I always was freezing.

Taking a public shower was the worst.

And the water was always cold!
