"If it came up for a vote", we are a nation of the people.

Politicians try to exert too much power.

As to the Heights remaining dry, I think some residents see it as a quaint tradition more than a moral issue.

All liquor in Utah is under state control

That's strange, can you get your car registered at the same time?

I mentioned as I searched Utah and spoke to a liquor store that I was going to mail her a bottle and got informed he (the agent would arrest me) and he explained it to me. And in Utah if you are going to have a drink at a motel you pay per drink to the state.

When the Olympics were in SLC it was only decided after Utah agreed to drop the restrictions on Liquor during the winter olympics

Actually, the dry/wet elections are by precincts.

In a partially wet or "damp" county, that is true. But counties can be completely dry with no discretion left to the subdivisions. The article is clearly referring to dry counties as opposed to damp counties.

If your county allows subdivisions to set up their own rules, it is by definition not a dry county.

I bet if you look at this list, your county is partially wet, not dry.

I moved to Middle Georgia after Katrina made me decide to leave the New Orleans area. I was shocked they still had blue laws on the books about buying alcohol on Sundays. We even have a Hooters here, where you go to watch football on Sundays IF THEY WOULD LIFT THE BLUE LAWS!

I really dont understand what good reason there is to have these laws. I am Catholic and I can assure you the Catholic church I grew up in had no such problem with responsible alcohol use.

Any of you who ever went to a Catholic parish fair in New Orleans probably tipped a beer with the priests on Sunday watching the kids do their stuff on stage or the bands that played! Man I had some good times at church fairs!

Hey, when you find a wine and beer store in Utah don't forget to take some home for the wives.

From her house it's a 10-mile jaunt to the metal-sided beer barns and package stores in either of two adjoining wet counties. ''We don't buy a lot and store it, so when we're planning a casual drink with friends it's a 40-minute trip," she said. ''It's just inconvenient."

Sarah dear, even though you know the word "planning," it's pretty clear you don't know what it means.

Instead of making that 40-minute trip every time you want a drink, Sarah dear, you should make ONE trip and buy a bottle of whatever liquors you like.

That way - check this out - when you want a casual drink, you already HAVE the liquor and don't have to drive.

Then there are proponents such as Sarah Strinden and her husband, Bill, who calls the county's dry status "silly."

Bill Strinden, a plastic surgeon, said he has watched Lufkin's medical community grow from about 40 doctors when he arrived 18 years ago to 150 today.

And you know what? Lufkin was DRY when the Strindens moved there.

It's not like this happened over the weekend.

I am officially out of patience with Sarah and Bill.

I'd be happy if they could just succesfully enforce the ban on meth.

Late night snacking is unhealthy, maybe drive thru fast food should be forced to close after midnight...

metal-sided beer barn (in the next county) = the "inconvenience store"...

I don't know if it's urban legend but I'd hear back in the 1950's when I was a kid that airliners wouldn't serve drinks if they were flying over Kansas airspace!

It used to be that Baptist sent their children to Hardin Simmons University in Abiline because the nearest known sin (a wet precinct) was 60 miles away.

When was that? I lived in Abilene during the early 1970's and knew of two places closer than that -- the town of Impact was incorporated just north of the Abilene city limits and consisted of one street lined with liquor stores. The other town was Buffalo Gap, located 40 miles south of Abilene. The colleges had spies posted at Impact watching for their students buying booze!

It's a fact not urban legend. When we flew into Kansas the waitresses gathered up the bottles beforehand

Don't know about that but here'a report from last week about a muslim cabdriver who refused to take customers who had wine in their belongings:

Got wine at the airport? It's harder to grab a cab (Mpls Star-Tribune - 28 sep 06)
