U.S. wins a united front on Iran

Nicholas Kralev

WASHINGTON TIMES

October 3,2006

The United States is confident that Russia and China will join it in pushing for U.N. sanctions against Iran if it does not agree to suspend enriching uranium this week, a senior U.S. official said yesterday.

R. Nicholas Burns, undersecretary of state for political affairs, also said the U.N. Security Council will insist on a clear answer to its demand that Iran suspend its enrichment activity. A "maybe" will be considered a "no," he said.

"For four months now, we've been waiting for an answer," Mr. Burns told editors and reporters at a luncheon at The Washington Times. "We've said, if they don't suspend enrichment, we'll take them to the Security Council and sanction them. We do believe we have Russian and Chinese support for that."

The five permanent council members -- the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China -- along with Germany on June 1 offered Iran a package of economic and political incentives if it suspends enrichment and asked for an answer by the end of July.

When there was no answer, the council passed a resolution threatening sanctions under Article 41 of Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter and gave Tehran another deadline, Aug. 31. But Iran began negotiating "seriously" with the Europeans only in mid-September, Mr. Burns said, and the Bush administration decided to wait a little longer.

At a dinner in New York on Sept. 18, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her five counterparts agreed that the first week of October would be the absolute deadline for Iran "to say yes or no," Mr. Burns said.

"She agreed with the Russians, Chinese and Europeans," he said of Miss Rice, "if Iran said no, we would all go to sanctions

Firstly, the reactor the Russians sold the Iranians is a light water reactor, exactly the same type the US gave to North Korea. That is why the article applies.

Secondly, the US and the EU have BOTH agreed Iran can have the light water reactor, but enriching the fuel is the problem. Indeed, the EU even agreed as an incentive to give the Iranians another light water reactor if they would agree to dismantle the heavy water reactor at Arak.

Thirdly, the US has accepted the proposal that Iran can have the light water reactor if the fuel is enriched in Russia.

Fourthly, with respect, I believe the US government over someone who obviously has not researched the subject, and doesn't have a clue what he is discussing.

Finally, Russia is not an ally of Iran or the US. The issue with Russia is money.

Iran President ridicules European Nuclear Offer

The European powers are currently drawing up a package of trade and technological incentives they hope will coax Iran into voluntarily curbing its atomic ambitions.

Under the draft deal, Russia would enrich uranium on Iran's behalf, diplomats say.

The offer -- which could include helping Iran acquire a light-water nuclear reactor -- was to have been reviewed Friday in London by the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany, but this meeting has been postponed.

BTW, the US approved the European offer.

And the US government considers Bushehr in its current situation a threat, so you should too. Mainly as it is Russian constructed, as indicated above. Russia is an ally or friend of Iran, the have numerous agreements, and Russian supports Iran, financially, politically and militarily. Russia is pro-Iran, not neutral.

But I was not even talking about Bushehr, you brought that up. I simply pointed out Russia is supporting Iran's nuclear program, you only talk only about it, not the other issues. Russia's nuclear aid to Iran includes, BUT its not at all limited too, Bushehr. And my article, which you failed to refute, showed the dangers of Bushehr in the current situation.

The article at the top states the US has Russia and China's support for sanctions. That proves you dead wrong.

Russia probably got WTO ascension, a free hand in Georgia, more US banking deals and investment, and other defense related things.
Russia and China probably got us to remove missile defense plans from Poland and Japan, and for us to look the other way on human rights violations in the two countries.
China probably received more guarantees of us not arming Japan.

'Do we really know where every facility is?'
Of course. Because you have built it for personnel training. It was long ago, when you were friends.

United front? Only insofar as it gets us to quit yapping about Iran. The China and Russia don't seriously think we're going to bomb Iran, so they'll offer this scrawny diplomatic fig leaf for us to cover ourselves with. The minute that we start acting like we're contemplating an imminent attack on Iran, all of this diplomatic cover will be stripped away. They'll turn on us so fast it'll start a whirlwind.

"They'll turn on us so fast it'll start a whirlwind."

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that, but I agree they won't be happy. Beyond that, what are they going to do? Cut off trade with us? I don't think so. Or maybe not pretend to be our friends any more?

It states the Chinese and Russian's have said they will support sanctions. They have not actually done it. Big difference. They both lie. A lot. Will the Chinese and Russians, actually vote for, and not just to break or exploit them, real sanctions? They have not yet. They often talk but do not do. Sanctions are a joke anyway, and they know it. Anyway the point was what was their motivation to do so? Besides I proved Russia and China are supporting Iran's nuclear programs. Which was the point. You did not provide any information that either country was not providing them with nuclear aid and tech. You cannot because it is the truth. Why do you insist on defending the KGB Putin?

Nope, don't know who he is, but it's not the US assisting Iran with their nuke program.

He was Iranian Shah, and big friend of USA. It was USA, who assisted in building research center, supplied equipment and enriched uranium for experiments. Germany begun building of Busher nuclear power station, because West persuaded Pekhlevi to use nuke energy instead of oil and gas. At that time there where no Islamic states led by mullahs, nobody even can imagine about such thing. And nobody would believe in crushing of USSR and Warsaw Treaty.

That's just it. You don't know what will happen 50 years later. You have to assist your allies in the present, you don't have the luxury of cutting them off on the assumption that they will be your enemy via a coup or revolution or whatever a half-century later.

Maybe England and Taiwan will be our mortal enemies in 2056. But should we treat them as such now?

May be your mortal enemies are in your country. May be USA will collapse just as USSR. Have seen some information, it will happen in 10-15 years.
