Genghis misunderstood
Washington Times ^ | 10-3-06 | Matthew Barakat

He's one of the most famous names of the last millennium, and he's the father of his country, which turns 800 years old this year. That's why the D.C. region's Mongolian community would like to see a statue erected of Genghis Khan, the George Washington of Mongolia.

No one knows where Chinnghis Quan is buried [ditto Ugedai, Guyk, Mongke and Qublai. They've never found his grave.

Much earlier. The Finns are linguistically related to the Magyars, who invaded Hungary around the 9th century A.D. Sabotai, Batu and the boys didn't show up until 1241 [in the greatest military campaign in history, IMHO]

Some did, specifically the Golden Horde in Russia [under Berke Quan, Batu's brother and successor] and, eventually, the Il-Quanate of Persia [Hulegu's uluis]. But, the sinicized Mongols of China [Qublai], became largely Buddhist, as did the Mongols from the homeland [Tibetan missionaries]. The Chagatids stayed largely pagan, as did many of the Mongols of Central Asia. And there was always a strong minority of Nestorian Christians.

True enough. Khan was real.

So what are you saying here? That Jesus Christ wasn't real? Are you saying that He never existed? If this is indeed what you are trying to say then please explain your reasoning.

> Christ is a religious figure; Khan is a national one, specifically Mongolia, not the US.

So? I've seen lots of statues for pre-US "national figures" around the US. Lots of Greeks, Romans, Englandlanders, Columbii, even a few Leif Eriksons.

> Are you saying that He never existed?

Khans existence is pretty definitive. Jesus is described at best by hearsay, and much of it vastly unreliable and fantastical.

Actually, the Mongols in the guize of the Ming Dynasty may well have discovered the Americas. Check out the voyages of Admiral He in the early 1400s ~ this real-er than life figure was the model for Sinbad the Sailer.

Ghenghis Khan was a remarkable individual who kicked human civilization in the teeth and put it back to work.

those are generally people much more relevant to the US than Khan. That said, I'm going to go ahead and admit that my "national figure" point doesn't really hold up under scrutiny. *Sigh* another case of posting first, thinking later.

I assume you are referring to Medieval warlords and dictators ~ their very existence and their use of traditional "robber baron" methods of enrichment were antithetical to the modern capitalist techniques then being promulgated by the Mongols

Good to get them out of the way.

Nothing wrong with a few dozen Ghengis Khan statues ~ mount him on a small horse.

So your reasoned, scientific approach to historical figures you don't approve of is to attempt to airbrush them from history?

Hmm, must try this myself. I don't like Mohammad. He is the father of a deathcult only too well known to FReepers. And so I apply your method to history and - shazam! He's gone! Mohammad never existed! What a satisfying way to deal with uncomfortable facts!

No, Jesus' existence is attested to with a greater body of personal eyewitnesses than just about anyone for the next thousand years.

Actually, there's no evidence outside of the Koran and the Hadiths that Mohammad ever existed.

Nice try at a strawman. Inaccurate, flawed, and plain wrong... but nice anyway.

> Mohammad never existed!

If you say so. However, the record of his existence is substantially greater than that for Christ.

Ah, its more than that my friend. There's no evidence outside of a whole load of obviously faked coins and correspondence - and some bigass monuments - that Julius Caesar ever existed! Man this is so coool!

Umm, I'd rather have Genghis Khan dead. He and his successors did plenty of damage to Christians.

And the idea of a Ghenghis Khan with tanks is kinda scary...
