In 2004, the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth started out on the margins of the presidential race. In an era of Old Media domination, they might have stayed there. When the group's founders held a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington on May 4, there was nothing in the next day's Washington Post, and the episode got scant attention elsewhere. A conservative website, FreeRepublic.com, however, covered the news conference and listed the fax numbers of Establishment news organizations, urging readers to send missives demanding to know why they were "blacking out" the event. A day later, the Post and New York Times carried short stories inside the paper. The Post report included the Kerry campaign's response that the Swift Boat Veterans was a "politically motivated organization with close ties to the Bush administration."

The SBVfT was organized by Vietnam veterans who profoundly resented Kerry's role in the antiwar movement. Some of the men personally had served with Kerry in Vietnam. The group was funded and promoted by prominent Republicans, several of whom had ties to both President Bush and Karl Rove, though no evidence of a coordinated effort ever emerged.

As it happened, the SBVfT need not have worried about the amount of coverage they would receive, in either the New Media or the Old. And the spasm of publicity would come at the worst possible time for Kerry. On July 28, one day before Kerry formally accepted the Democratic nomination at the party's national convention in Boston, Drudge touted the imminent release of Un¿t for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry. On the morning of Drudge's report, the book was ranked at #1,318 on Amazon.com. The next day it had jumped to #2, and within a couple of days it hit #1.

Like a lot of things political nowadays, the term "Swift Boating" has two different meanings. To the left, they pretend such means lies are told about their candidates.

To the right, it means the truth is told about left-wing lies.

The tiebreaker is the fact that the left never quite gets around to saying what the right-wing lies were, whereas the right documents where the left lied.

First of all we need a good candidate:

1) George Allen Jr - Not ready from prime time.

2) John McCain - Uh, no.

3) Newt Gingrich - He will sound intelligent one second draw me in, then say something completely stupid. No.

4) Chuck Hagel - I almost threw up at the thought.

5) Mitt Romney - I don't know enough about him.

6) Rudy Giuliani - I like Rudy, but his social programs are way too liberal. The GWOT is more important though. However, when he was Larry King this summer and when asked "How do we deal with people who are willing die for a nilhist philosophy (paraphrase)", he could not bring himself to say "kill them". He danced around it. This may me wonder if he could stomach actually killing Jihadis.

7) Condi Rice - Her Test is the Department of State. She's a true NeoCon, too liberal on social policies. I am not totally convinced.

I want someone who is youngish and dynamic, yet has a conservatarian philosophy like VP Cheney, someone who isn't afraid to say I will kill terrorist.

You are so right (pun intended). I have asked 2 of my liberal friends, who keep talking about the "Swift Boat lies" to document to me just two lies, out of all the charges the SBVfT brought against Kerry. Well, they still says "Swift Boat lies" however they admit to me that they don't know what those lies are.

We all do. Problem is our mail order politicians won't make the cut unless they have a family name affiliated with politics for the past 30 years or so.

We have to look beyond politicians to find the real leadership we need..

Unfortunately there's no one like that who has any national visibility. It's go with what's there now or throw in the towel on 08 and hope for someone new by 2012.

5) Mitt Romney - I don't know enough about him.

Nor do I. The media keeps going on that him being a Mormon will hurt him with the conservative crowd. I don't think so.
But what do I know....I'm watching an old George Strait show at the Astrodome on tv. Lordy, now he's singing Amarillo By Morning. He's got my vote for President.

I thought Mark Halperin was one of the good guys. But what this article fails to point out is that most of the charges made against Kerry were TRUE. He is a serial gigolo. He lives in five fancy houses. He is exceedingly vain about his hair.

And the Vietnam business hurt him because it was true. Out of one side of his mouth he repeatedly claimed to be a war hero. Out of the other he revealed a disgusting hippie antiwar protestor, a clone of Jane Fonda.

Yes, he destroyed himself, but not because Drudge attacked him. Drudge spent at least as much energy attacking Bush. The difference is that the attacks on Bush proved to be fictions and forgeries, but the attacks on Kerry were true.

Drudge and the RNC Frenchified him? I think not. M. Kerry Frenchified himself.

The electoral landscape for the GOP is getting more difficult.

The GOP hasn't won California, Illinois, or Pennsylvania since 1988. Since then we are 2-2. The Northwest, used to be solid GOP, is gone. We have the South, but if the GOP loses Florida or Ohio, we will never win another Presidential election.

Its like the lefts reaction to Fox verses the rights reaction to CBS and other lamestream media. We can point to Jayson Blair, forged NG documents, Koran toilet stories. They just cry "propaganda for the right" when talking about Fox news. By the way, they hired a new nurse at my job. I heard her talking to another woman when I heard her use the term drive by Media. If i was single i would have married her
