Well. Ahem. Let's just say: Usually when a congressman is involved in a scandal, he doesn't bring the whole party down with him. This time could be different.
The Mark Foley affair is so simple and so human, it's like a Cliffs.Notes version of all the other Republican scandals:
Rampant corruption.
Leadership? Ha.
No one cares till the klieg lights get turned on.

Except this time, we won't. Foley's folly has - forgive me - exposed the Republicans as the party that really doesn't care about all the things it says it does: mom, apple pie, morals. All it cares about is staying in power.
Were that not its basic motivator, it wouldn't find itself in the position it is in today, roundly condemning the very behavior it was happy to ignore until it bit 'em (and God knows who else) in the behind.
To recap: It was almost a year ago that the top GOPers in the House were told that Foley had sent an "overly friendly" e-mail to a House page. What does "overly friendly" mean?
Overly CREEPY. Duh! Especially when Mr. Friendly himself is an unmarried congressman with a well-documented fondness for underage manhood.
Now, if YOU knew all this, would you quietly ask the potential predator to lay off and then hope for the best? And - just asking - if you knew your neighbor was an ice-pick enthusiast, would you quietly ask him to please not hang around the playground and then hope for the best?
OF COURSE NOT! But House Speaker Dennis Hastert and his minions kept mum, fearing scandal. How appropriate that in the process they created the one that may do them in.
Until now, the (many) Republican scandals have been way too complicated to stay on the national radar. Tom DeLay allegedly laundered money. Terrible! But who remembers for whom? How much? It's murky.
So are all those scandals involving lobbyist Jack Abram.off, even though it was mostly Republican congressmen who took "Casino Jack's" cash (this from the party that fancies itself our guardian of virtue). And then there was Duke Cunningham (R-Calif.). He's serving time for some bribery scandal. And Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) sold a bunch of stock right before its price tanked. Suspicious? Yes. Compelling? No.
The problem is: When congressional crimes involve balance sheets and a tedious paper trail, we tend to fade out. With fading comes forgetting and even unintentional forgiveness.
But failing to protect young people from a potential predator even while claiming to be the party of family values?
That's as clear as the pants around your ankles. And perhaps the final comeuppance for a party with so much moral posturing, and so little moral fiber.

Republicans whose personal sex-related scandalous behavior was exposed who resigned or did not run for reelection: Mark Foley (Congress - 2006), Bob Livingston (Congress/Speaker of the House Designate - 1998), Bob Packwood (Senate - 1995).Republicans who lost subsequent reelection races or who ended political campaigns when personal sex-related scandalous behavior was exposed: Thomas Evans (Congress - 1982, lost in 1982); Bill Crane (Congress - 1983, lost in 1984); Jack Ryan (IL Gubernatorial Candidate - 2004, dropped out).
Republicans whose political careers survived personal sex-related scandalous behavior: NONE.
Democrats whose personal sex-related scandalous behavior was exposed who resigned or did not run for reelection: Wayne Hays (Congress - 1976); Wilbur Mills (mid-1970s, forced out of Way and Means Committee chairmanship, but was re-elected by voters after scandal exposed; did not run for re-election after "relapse"). (Aside: The WaPo article gives the casual reader the impression tha Mills resigned from office, but he never did. He only resigned from Ways and Means.)
Democrats who lost subsequent reelection race or who ended political campaigns when personal sex-related scandalous behavior was exposed: Gary Condit (Congress - 2002, but more because of his possible association with Chandra Levy's murder than the affair he may have had with her); Gary Hart (1988, but ONLY AFTER being rejected by New Hampshire primary voters).
Democrats whose political careers were uninterrupted despite personal sex-related scandalous behavior being exposed: Gary Studds (Congress - 1983; served until retirement in 1996); Barney Frank (Congress - 1985; still in Congress); Jim Bates (Congress - early 1990s; re-elected once); Bill Clinton (President - 1998-1999; despite impeachment for lying under oath and obstruction of justice, completed second presidential term).

Yes it is so! He ran as Democrat in Florida before he "came out" as Republican.
Democrats are like a pack of yapping little dogs. It doesn't matter what Republicans do here come these yapping little dogs. If others are like me you begin to expect it so it loses the desired response.
Also, Instead of scorecards on how many perverts we have on each side, I'd like to see bi-partisan efforts to clean Congress on both sides.
Somebody needs to get Hastert -OFF- the air. He keeps getting on Boortz and Rush stuttering that he's "got a good story to tell."

Tell us about how this is the kind of society progressives want us to have. Homosexual adoption and gay marriage, but no 15 yr olds learning about govt in the United States Congress because there's too many gay congressmen?
Tell us that THIS is exactly the reason we can't have Democrats running the country.

The scandal is already falling appart.
Now that the message has gone out that emails are not instant messages and Alexander has already corrected his confusion.
The only people pushing the idea that an email is an instant message is CNN and NBC and Novak. There rest are just parroting the others.
In the end this makes ALL homosexuals who are on staff a liability and have to be removed. This is now backlashing.

Man, what you said. BUMP! Hastert is pathetic. Whiny, almost, because the dinosuar newsrooms are pumping up this Foley scandal on behalf of their party instead of talking about all the great accomplishments of the Republican Congress.

The Foley scandal isn't "falling apart". It's just festering for now.
Here's the way these things go: The Foley scandal will continue to dominate the news cycle until it becomes old and tiresome to the very short attention span of a fairly jaded general public. About the time the scandal has finally played itself out (a week? two?) another big story/scandal will enter the picture. A better one. This new story (whatever it is) will be controlled by the Republicans, and it will directly utilize the Foley scandal, jujitsu-style, to propel itself.
A Florida congressman named Mark Foley - - one of 435 congressmen - - will be quickly forgotten.

The upshot of this is that it enables the practicioner to hold others to standards different from the one he or she (in this case) follows. "Special rules for special people," meaning "any rule I like for you and none at all for me." It's a convenient little scam if the other fellow is gullible enough to buy it.
