Rep. Chris Shays, a Republican facing a tough challenge from an anti-war Democrat, on Wednesday called for Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld to resign.
The Connecticut lawmaker also accused officials at the Defense Department of withholding information about the Iraq war from Congress.
"I am losing faith in how we are fighting this war," Shays, a longtime supporter of the conflict, said in an interview. "I believe we have to motivate the Iraqis to do more."
Shays said defense officials stopped cooperating with his congressional subcommittee after he proposed setting a timeline for troop withdrawals. Shays, who had previously opposed such a timeline, offered the plan in August following his 14th trip to Iraq since the war began.
Rumsfeld "simply is refusing to cooperate with a committee that oversees the Department of Defense," Shays said. "To me he has crossed the line."
"I think Donald Rumsfeld needs to step down," Shays said.
Several congressional Democrats have clamored for Rumsfeld's resignation, but it's rare for a lawmaker in President Bush's political party to argue that the Pentagon chief should step down. Republican candidate Tom Kean Jr., who is seeking a Senate seat in New Jersey, also has called for Rumsfeld's resignation.

Does he count?
This must be Shays campaign theme. Call for all Republicans to quit. First he says HAstert needs to quit in aqualified way and now Rumsfeild
More Republican disarray. It's offically over - Democrats will win the House & Senate and the terrorists will ultimately win when the weak-kneed liberals take over.
Thanks Chrissie boy!
LOL! No. I just wish he'd just shut the heck up though!
Shays is a leading RINO who didn't even vote to impeach Clinton. I guess now he's finding even his MSM buds deserting him for a real anti-war Dem. Too bad Chris!
Chris Shays is still steamed that he always got beat up for his lunch money - in college.
why doesnt Shays quit?
I guess Shays thinks he's got to do homage at the alter of "Rumsfeld should quit" to help his re-election chances. Whatever. This election and the silly season it's brought with it can't end soon enough for me so maybe a grain of sanity can return to our government.
Now, there's no point to it.
...forget it.
"I believe Rumsfeld should have resigned in 2004."
***
Correct. He should at least have resigned or been fired for his stupid answer in Iraq when a soldier queried about getting more armor for American Humvees:
"You go to war with what you got!", Rummy replied.
Rummy is an arrogant technocrat like McNamara was.
Hey, Shays, I have a much better idea, why don't YOU quit?
Shay must have a real tough fight. But if he stabs the GOP in the back just running for office, why would anyone think he would stand with the GOP when elected?
He's a loony liberal, even by Connecticut standards (Joe Lieberman, no conservative, is well to the right of him these days). He's wrong on Iraq, wrong on the Second Amendment, wrong on abortion, wrong on homosexuality, wrong on taxes, wrong on immigration, wrong on property rights, wrong on Bill Clinton... and yet the RNC is spending MILLIONS to make sure he retains his seat.
He used to be right on Iraq, but now his views have changed 180 degrees. Why again is he a Republican?
What a pussy. This Ct. blue blood couldn't make a pimple on Rummies ass. I hope this left wing ass kissing causes him to lose.
.....because I don't care about America or it's safety. Right now, it's all about me. Vote ME in November."
The timing makes me wonder whether Shays has a prediliction he'd rather us not know about.
On crucial votes, Chris Shays always votes with the Democrats. And yet he's the RNC's favorite candidate, if you look at all the money we're pouring into his campaign chest. Why Chris Shays?
