Chavez outrage fuels 'boycott Citgo' effort
WorldNetDaily.com ^ | October 4, 2006 | WorldNetDaily.com

Citgo Petroleum has lost a contract to supply 7-Eleven fuel needs around the nation, elected leaders in two states are considering formal action against the company and dozens of smaller boycotts are being launched because owner Hugo Chavez called President Bush "the devil" and envisions the destruction the United States.

"I can't buy a product from a country that wants to destroy our way of life as we know it," one supporter of the Citgo Boycott website said. "I don't care if Citgo starts selling gas for $.50/gal. I will go to another station and pay $2.50. All Americans must realize that by purchasing gas from Citgo, you're digging your own grave … or your children's graves."

I rarely see the point in boycotting anything. No one cares. No matter what you or I do, Venezuela won't have a problem marketing all that oil.

Hey..it's $1.91 in Waynesboro, Va., and you don't have to go to CITGO to get it.

Just say NO..

Freedom's a PITA sometimes, eh?

Let them market it. If they have a problem marketing it here, so much the better.

Chubby can KMA.

Three problems: Independents buy anything so places like Race Track will not sell you a product you're of unknown origin. Refiners may refine Chavez crude without us knowing. Finally, Citgo--based in Tulsa and Houston--employs Americans.

One things for sure, I'm glad the ChiComs were barred from buying Amaco (I think it was Amaco).

Boycotts do work especially this one which is a no brainer. There are hundreds of gas stations to choose from and I never shop Citgo. I've always thought the best way to deal with these third world blow hards is to cut them off. They are doing what they are doing because they think they have leverage.

We are 300,000,000 person country that all use petroleum in some form or another. Cutting Venezuela off would increase reserves around the world thereby driving bbl prices down. It might be wishful thinking but maybe we'll end up paying less at the pump by not giving giving Chavez all of those American dollars. (thats my unused 20 year old econ degree talking).

I say starve them and get Chavez overthrown. It will take a while but money talks. Capitalism will always win.

I am pretty certain that the US will never actually cut off Venezuela no matter what Chavez does or says. We need oil. They have all that oil, so close. If we actually did embargo them (which will never happen), prices would probably go way up, and we would further enrich them anyway because some other country would take that oil off their hands. Chavez isn't worried that his big mouth will have any actual consequences and neither am I.

This is my best year ever income wise. My house has doubled in value in 6 years. You need to look at the bigger picture rather than your selfish needs. Quit buying their gas you commie supporter.

And cheer up for God's sake. Life is good. Wait... you're one of them... ah I get it now...

Florida state Rep. Adam Hasner, R-Delray Beach, said he wants Florida to strip Citgo of its contract to run gas stations on Florida's Turnpike.

What does the contract say? Can Florida legally do that?

Well maybe not a formal embargo imposed by government. But more of a principled embargo driven by the American public. Was Southland Corporation Venezuelas biggest customer? I don't know. It seems Chavezs' big mouth lost that account for them.

Welcome to FR.

am pretty certain that the US will never actually cut off Venezuela no matter what Chavez does or says.

The U.S. may not boycott as you point out but that does not mean consumers won't - and it is happening.

I live in a classic exburb, high-growth area that is so not liberal.  In a three mile stretch there is every brand you can imagine, BP, Speedway, Mobil, maybe 10 altogether including one Citgo.

It is the only one I know of in a 20-mile radius.  While all the other fuel retailers were jammed with cars (and endless SUVs) I noticed the Citgo had not a single car on the property - not even a car that looked like maybe an employee owned it.  Even slammed on the brakes, thought there might be a robbery or perhaps it closed.

Nonetheless, the brand is tainted and if this local retailer wants to stay in business, he'll have to change brands.

Boycotts do work.  Ask the LAT, NYT, or many other MSM outlets that are downsizing for lack of customers...

I think the point is we won't be giving our money to Chavez. What other counties do...well that's their business.
FYI in addition to being Castro's newest best buddy (selling Cuba oil at a discount) He's also providing support FARC (naro-terrorists) and has given a couple of island off the coast to Iran to use as they see fit. Isn't that swell! A real sweet guy.

Whatever. I'm not going to hold my breath for all Americans to get together and reject Citgo. For most people, "good" oil is synonymous with cheap oil. A considerable percentage of the price per barrel is based on future "uncertainty," not real cost. If the U.S. took action against any significant oil supplier, the "fear" of speculators would send prices through the roof. Then OPEC laughs all the way to the bank & more palaces go up in Abu Dhabi and Riyadh. In case you haven't noticed, it's already happened. Oil-rich countries are in an extremely strong position with regard to the U.S., and Chavez's obnoxious posturing is symptomatic of that.

Well, I've heard two corporate radio ads for Citgo in the last few days - on Rush I think. Real Kumbaya stuff. The second one had the nerve to tout there giveaways to "low income families".

So, it sounds like they're feeling the heat.

Let's say you aren't giving any of your precious $$ to Chavez. Good for you. What about Saudi Arabia, our ally, which is at least as evil as Saddam was? Our country loves freedom and depends upon despicable regimes for its lifeblood. Governments and companies have a thirst for oil that far outweighs any interest they might have in the morality of oil producers. Is it surprising then that oil producers can get away with murder? Our country is the most powerful in the world, but necessary more powerful than those who supply our oil. They could boycott us, too. Remember when that happened? How much worse would it be if the scenario repeated itself now? Awful as he is, Chavez is hardly the worst of the lot. And that's why this idea of a Citgo boycott is so ridiculous.

Wow, pretty feisty for a n00b.

Kerry got 48% in '04, you do realize you're surrounded by idiots?  'All Americans' is a bit of a stretch.

A couple of percent may be the difference between life or death.

And as the fuel prices fall like they are now, these speculators get hosed, additionally OPEC members always cheat as they want to maintain their piece of the pie, driving prices even lower.

You don't like boycotts?  Find the nearest Citgo, fill up your Prious and make sure you bring a gas can so run your mower on Hugo's profit.
