Top GOP leaders botched the Foley scandal
UnionLeader.com ^ | October 5, 2006 | Robert Novak

AFTER IT WAS learned that Rep. Mark Foley had dispatched an inappropriate e-mail message to a 16-year-old male former page, the House Republican leadership was still urging him to seek re-election from his Florida district. He agreed. It was a success that surely will cost the Republicans Foley's seat in Congress and perhaps control of the House for the first time since the 1994 election.

Do we now know this to be a false statement?

No, this is probably correct. The IMs went to the older guy. The e-mails, which really were just pilabber, were sent to someone who was at least 16.

"Even though the sexually explicit messages sent to other former pages in 2003 and 2004 were not yet known, this was the time to ease out Foley."

Piling on I see.....sheesh....

Obviously, if they had thought he was a child molester, they would not have asked him to delay retirement, (which they asked of all seats for 06).

The MSM are beginning to sound like an Oprah Show, ridicules.

I wouldn't count on it..

Seems the page in question was no longer a page and was 18 when the IM's started getting graphic.

Novak knew Armitage outed plame... he kept his dim mouth shut to help defeat Bush. Novak knew Scooter Libby was innocent, but he kept his mouth shut and let him hang from the gallows. Novak knows the man was 18 when the salacious IM's were sent and that this scandal (concerning Republican Leadership) is BS... once again he... see a pattern?

I seriously doubt the Foley scandal is going to seriously affect any race outside of his district.

Because a voter is repelled by Foley's shenanigans doesn't mean that they will abruptly abandon the GOP and embrace the party of gay marriage and abortion.

Repelled Independents will most likely say "A pox on both your houses." and stay home, which alters nothing.

The liberals are attempting to prybar a political advantage out of this but I predict that in the next few days their carefully planted bomb will go off in their faces.

Novak needs to retire. Foley was a very good congressman, imho. Hate to see him disgraced, amd maybe others here feel the same.

The other thing that strikes me about this is that these guys were apparently not Foley's pages and he did not write them until after they left the page program.

Doesn't that remove the "abuse of power" element of this thing?

I am worried about Novak. Maybe he should consider retirement.
Note the latest reports. The original emailed page was not 16 and had already left the job. The emails are just unwise in wording. Meanwhile, according to Drudge and others, the "kid" who got the IMs may have been over 18. The story is blowing up fast.

Still, I am glad Foley is leaving so another Republican can and will be elected.

He is referring to the e-mail message requesting the picture that Foley sent to the ex-page in Louisiana, in response to which his family passed a request on that Foley send the ex-page no more e-mails.

The GOP leadership never saw this e-mail. All they knew was that Foley had sent a "non-sexual" e-mail to this ex-page, and that the ex-page's family had asked that Foley be told to send no further e-mails to him. Foley was told to send no further e-mails, and he did not.

IMO, this information, alone, did not warrant strong action against Foley, much less warrant forcing Foley to resign. (Whether there was further info available at the time that warranted stronger action remains to be seen).

This is in contrast to the instant messages Foley exchanged with the 18 year old ex-page in California. But there is no evidence that anybody in the Republican leadership knew about those instant messages before ABC released them a few days ago.

It is only October 4. The election will be held in about a month. In political terms, a month is just short of eternity. The mainstream media will be on to the next scandal or big story as soon as it occurs. And hardly anyone will even remember this happened by election time. Unless, of course, the MSM tries to keep it pumped up for an entire month. But that rarely works. Foley was a scumbag, no doubt. But what does that have to do with me voting for Mike McGavick instead of Maria Cantwell? Absolutely nothing...zero...nada...zip.

Should have primaried him.

Perhaps not graphic, but extremely inappropriate. Go back and read the transcript of the conversation where the boy says he won't turn 18 until February. Foley says he's horny, and when the boy says he should slow down because he's not yet 18, Foley tells him he can dream. Sick.

IMO, if the guy(s) was/were a(n) ex-pages, over the age of 18, it's just two gay guys talking...it's freaky, but that's what it is.
