Walter Reed FReep - Week 76 and It's Getting Colder
10/05/2006 | PleaDeal

#76-Fall Arrives at Walter Reed - September 29

We gathered once again on the sidewalks in front of Walter Reed to deliver our message of thanks to the Wounded Warriors and their families and caregivers, and to counter-protest the Code Pink commies who continue to haunt and taunt our service members. It was a great night with another large crowd of FReepers and FRiends and a small crowd of pitiful Pinkos.

We said goodbye to Citizen SMASH this week. He finished his assignment here and has gone back to the "left" coast. On his milblog you'll find his farewell post Walter Reed Epilogue.

FRIDAY was my last day on the job in DC. After work, I drove up Georgia Avenue for one last Friday night with my friends outside Walter Reed.

There are only a dozen members of Code Pink present, looking rather pitiful on the sidewalk. Having nothing further to say to them, I leave them to stew in their self-inflicted misery.

I make my rounds amongst the groups rallying to support the troops outside the main gate. This evening, they outnumber the Code Pink crowd by about three to one. As usual. the Code Pink bunch evacuate promptly at 9pm. They don't want to be there when the buses get back from the Friday night dinners, because they don't like the single-digit-salute that they typically receive from the wounded soldiers and their families.

Read the rest here.

The whole list of FReepers and FRiends in attendance tonight (* indicates lurkers, PW=Protest Warrior): 2ndClassCitizen, Albion Wilde, Apple Blossom, Barbara from VA*, Bill* from MD, bmwcyle, BufordP, Cindy-true-supporter, Citizen SMASH, Clint N Suhks & Mrs Suhks & FReeper pup 'Brandy', concretebob, Fraxinus, Freeping_In_Silence, George and Ethel*, Gretchen15, GunsAreOK, ilovew, Jimmy Valentine's Brother, Just A Nobody, Kristinn, Lauren (PW), maica, Matthew (PW), Olgaesq01, PleaDeal, Sensei Ern, TBP, tgslTakoma, Tolerance Sucks Rocks, Trooprally [Mr. & Mrs].

Here are my pics from the night. Gretchen15's pics are here and Trooprally [Mrs.] are here.

Trooprally [Mr.] had something to say:

Pinko Burma Shave

Cindy_True_Supporter and us followed each other down to WR tonight and parked on the southwest corner, there by almost guaranteeing that the Burma Shave signs will be posted. As more FReepers arrived, we had two more drive over and park with us. Four cars completed the Burma Shave project.

The idea of Burma Shave Signs is that they periodically change. If you have an idea for a saying, FReep mail Kristinn. Just be sure that they rhyme, are short and to the point. Remember that the cars are traveling at least 40 MPH when they pass the signs. FReepers always express their wish to be with us. This would be the next best thing.

It was another exciting night as more FReepers began to show up. Being that there were ample FReepers in attendance, every one was able to move around and visit with each other. [Mrs] T was feeling much better and was able to get around tonight.

Pizza was very good, but with the cooler nights coming upon us the pizza cooled down real quick. Reminder to self, 'Don't wait so long before eating the pizza'.

Mr. Bullhorn

Mr. Bullhorn (bmwcyle) is visited by Mrs. and Clint N. Suhks and Sensei Ern. This week's repertoire included a wonderful selection from one of our best-loved hatemongers - Anne Coulter! The Pinkos were appropriately aghast.

Not sure what's going on here. Gretchen15 caught Mr. Bullhorn using old fashioned lung power to get his message across.

The Pinkos were waaaay down the block as usual. This week they tried to make their numbers look better by posting three newbies on the opposite side of the street. Yes, they have a permit for both sides of Georgia Ave....

prowling pinkos
This pair of prowling Pinkos circled our corners several times before finally departing. They paused on the NW corner and asked FReeping_in_Silence where she got her bag. It was creepy!

It will be interesting to see what new signs they bring this week, what with the Foley/Page scandal and all. They must be terribly disappointed that Drudge is reporting that the most lurid IMs between Foley and a page were nothing but a prank orchestrated by several pages to goad Foley. Still, I expect the Pinkos will have some new sign demanding that Hastert resign, Rumsfeld be fired, and Bush be impeached. Whatever...

R.T.Delta was on the bus two weeks ago and his post about the ride home is A Soldier's Perspective. A shot he took from inside the Fran O'Brien's bus.

View from the bus

This is from the bus on Friday night [Sept 22]. It was a cold rain. I rain that even caused the smokers to hurriedly load onto the bus in hopes that the trip wouldn't take too long. As the meal settled and the heat warmed us we began to sleep. It was 9:30PM and we were almost home. As if almost on cue Soldiers and their families woke from their slumber. We are up the block now, tracing the black iron fence line that borders Walter Reed. Everyone is awake now, excited at the opportunity to flip of the protesters, and even more important, anticipating the warm welcome of the supporters. Some of the Soldiers know the Free Republic people by name and begin to point them out to the new comers. You can almost hear the spouses and loved ones breathing a sigh of relief that it is the Free Republic standing at the gate, and not the protesters. Their wounded warrior is safe.

And I take my shot. And I make my memories.

The bus from the Fran O'Brien's dinner is still rolling.

GR view

Back of Bus
Bringing up the rear.

Speaking of A Soldier's Perspective, chcknhawk is trying to send as many boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to Iraq and Afghanistan as possible. It's the very last minute now - Friday is the deadline.

Any golfers out there? Olney Golf Park is hosting a fund raiser for the Wounded Warriors of Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval Hospital to purchase equipment to be given away (yes, for free!) to any and all soldier/sailers/airmen/Marines who have a desire to play. It doesn't matter what their disability is, the pros at Olney Golf will find a way to teach them to swing a club.

Golf in Olney!
Come out and join the Salute to Soldiers from noon to 3, Saturday October 7th.

We'll be back out at Walter Reed tomorrow, Friday night, October 6th, from 6:30 until at least 9:30 at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Elder Street, NW in Washington, D.C.

Being there with us in spirit is great, but we need people to hold the MOAB (Mother of all banners), other signs, and flags. Maybe you can't come every week, but please make it your patriotic duty to join us at least once in the near future. This FReep is rewarding, fun, and important for our troops and our nation.

We are told every week by patients and family members that our presence at the gate means a lot to them. The wounded warriors inside the hospital are heartened by the sight of ordinary citizens cheering for them and displaying our heartfelt thanks for the service and sacrifice they've made on our behalf. Just like last week, we were told again that the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan know we're out here cheering them on.

A couple hours one night a week is very little to give compared to what they've contributed!

As always, the DC Chapter's rules for protesting will be in effect. Briefly, they are: No violence. No profanity. No racism. No provocations. Obey the law. Treat all law enforcement officers with respect.

Keeping the BIG LIST: All DC Chapter Walter Reed FReeps - c/o BufordP.

Counting the days until I FReep with you again.

Also racking my brain for a new burma shave slogan...can anyone think of anything that rhymes with stunts besides the obvious 'c' word??? As in:

Don't be fooled by their stunts...

they're nothing but...

Commie *****...

We are coming up to DC next week to bury our son who was KIA. After the internment at ANC on Wednesday, we will remain in town until Saturday.

I would be happy to turn to on next weeks Friday night and meet you all.

We booked a hotel in Foggy Bottom so if one of you would be kind enough to grant me a contact number in a private reply. I will be there.

Keep up the brainstorming. We know its tough to get something. I like your 'c' slogan but it will never fly. If a pic is posted of the slogan the Mods would remove the thread, probably ban the writer and photographer, along with Kristinn. Now that would be a "3Fer".

[Mrs] T & I came up with:

Don't Be Fooled
By Their Flim Flam
Up Ahead
Pinko Scam

And that got a polite maybe.

But there needs to be a new slogan otherwise the Burma Shave signs will loss their charm.
