An investigation into the death of a shooting victim, 22, who staggered into a gas station determined the man was mortally wounded by a store clerk during an armed robbery attempt, police reported Thursday.
Around 1 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, Lonnell Davison went to the U Save Variety Store in the 5100 block of South Western Avenue and posed as a customer.
Davison picked up merchandise and took it to the counter, then allegedly pulled out a handgun and demanded money. After taking the cash from the clerk, he allegedly fired at the employee as he made his getaway.
The clerk fired back, and Davison dropped his handgun and ran, according to the LAPD.
About 45 minutes later, he turned up at a gas station at La Brea and Slauson avenues and was taken by sheriff's deputies to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
The store clerk told officers that he shot Davison in self-defense and positively identified him as the robbery suspect.

ping,
Top ten!!
It's LA. He didn't tell the police about the other three perpes he shot right before that either, LOL.
The article doesn't mention whether the clerk called police or not. Hmmmm. Interesting, to say the least. If the clerk didn't call police, he'll probably face some sort of charges, I'd think.
*Sniff* I just love a happy ending *sniff*
Maybe they should combine perp and victim and call them prictims.
Now that's proper gun control. ;)
That's not a victim, that's a thief. A "good perp".
Probably thought he missed, so "no harm no foul" and it's also possible the clerk didn't have the proper papers for his weapon. It might have been "too cheap" (ie. Saturday Night Special, aka Affordable handgun). Any number of possible problems. But if one of those, or many others, apply he can expect further attention from the LAPD or the State Attorney General's goon squad.
wonder what Rosie will say about this tomorrow on the View :-\
Perhaps personal phone calls aren't allowed while on the job?
"Doesn't sound to me like the clerk even called the police?"
Left wing moonbat CBS flake ~ Bump!
haha!
*snickersnicker*
Where's the love! "SARC"
The clerk should give these officers some shooting lessons. What a waste of ammo.

The family of a man who killed a Polk County sheriff's deputy and was subsequently riddled with 68 bullets called on Florida Gov. Jeb Bush Thursday to order an independent investigation of the shooting.
Nine SWAT officers fired a total of 110 bullets at 27-year-old Angilo Freeland last week after he fatally shot a Polk County deputy and his dog and wounded another deputy after fleeing from a traffic stop.
"This is not about a lawsuit. Nobody is suing anybody," the family's attorney, Grady Irvin, said at a Thursday afternoon new conference. "What this is all about is this death is uncommon in the means and manner by which Mr. Freeland died - 68 bullet holes. His family just wants to put this issue to rest and they want a search for the truth, that's all."
An Orlando-based civil rights group also on Thursday called on U.S. Attorney Alberto Gonzales to look into the circumstances surrounding Freeland's death.
Irvin said race isn't an issue in the shooting. But he was concerned by Polk County Sheriff's Grady Judd's tough talk to reporters before and after Freeland's death.
"I suspect the only reason 110 rounds was all that was fired was that's all the ammunition they had," Judd said after Freeland's death. "We were not going to take any chance of him shooting back."
Freeland's mother, Janice, and two siblings, Nikki and Corey, stood beside the lawyer in a Tampa law office, but made only brief remarks.
Janice Freeland leaned heavily on a desk as she read a prepared statement.
"On behalf of our family, I would like to publicly express our sympathy for the losses of the families and the people of Polk County have suffered," she said. "We do not condone the killing of anyone. Any wrong committed by my son does not have the blessing of me and my family. All we want is for all questions surrounding why this happened to be answered."
Irvin said the family had not seen Freeland's body, which was picked up from the morgue Thursday, because it was so badly mangled by the bullets.
"There were bullet holes everywhere," Irvin said, noting one of Freeland's hands was shot off. "They were in his head. In his face. I understand he had perfect teeth. Those were unbelievable when I saw them."
Kristy Campbell, a spokeswoman for Gov. Bush, said the office had not received any request from the Freeland family late Thursday. She said it would be "premature" for the governor to order an investigation while the Polk County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are still reviewing the shooting.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office declined to comment on the request.
On Sept. 28, Deputy Vernon "Matt" Williams, 39, and his dog were shot while pursuing Freeland, who fled from a traffic stop. Deputy Doug Speirs, also 39, was shot in the leg moments later during an exchange of gunfire with Freeland.
Williams was shot eight times, including one shot fired at close range to his temple and another behind his ear, authorities said. Diogi was shot once.
Freeland also traded shots with Lakeland police officers.
The shootings triggered a massive manhunt with more than 500 officers converging on the area from around the state. The all-night manhunt ended almost 24 hours later when a SWAT team fatally shot Freeland 68 times.
Authorities later said the nine SWAT officers fired a total of 110 rounds at Freeland. He had been hiding under a log not far from where Williams was killed a day earlier.
Williams was mourned by more than 4,500 people at his funeral Tuesday.
Sounds like something from Monty Python
The Dead Collector: Bring out yer dead.
[a man puts a body on the cart]
Large Man with Dead Body: Here's one.
The Dead Collector: That'll be ninepence.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I'm not dead.
The Dead Collector: What?
Large Man with Dead Body: Nothing. There's your ninepence.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I'm not dead.
The Dead Collector: 'Ere, he says he's not dead.
Large Man with Dead Body: Yes he is.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I'm not.
The Dead Collector: He isn't.
Large Man with Dead Body: Well, he will be soon, he's very ill.
Or maybe it is 91 and then 1? Best wait 'til shif change to ask about the smelly, but very quiet, perp.
