Not Ready to Make Nice (Dixie Chicks in Australia, STILL Whining About Free Republic)
AdelaideNow ^ | Sunday, October 8, 2006 | Kirsten Heyson

It's hard to believe this petite, well-mannered Texan - sitting opposite in a Sydney harbourside hotel - caused the kind of stir the music industry has not seen since John Lennon sang about being crucified in 1969.

It's the day before the band's first Australian concert on their Accidents and Accusations world tour.

Maines looks younger than her 31 years.

SNIP

Aware she may sound "bizarre", the 31-year-old believes the vitriol directed at The Dixie Chicks was part of a right-wing conspiracy.

An organised group known as the Free Republic set out to bring the band down.

The organisation's power, she says, comes through the internet. The site has thousands of subscribers, all of whom were encouraged to destroy the band's music and boycott the radio stations that played it.

"It's scary how much power they do have," she says. "They can take down someone singlehandedly and I don't think Americans are aware of that.

"It's the same group that went after (former US president) Bill Clinton and (gay actress) Ellen DeGeneres."

In the beginning, Maines says, they tried to fight their detractors. Their management tried to alert radio station programmers to what was happening.

"But they weren't open to it and just thought we were grasping at straws to try and salvage something," she says.

"It was just bigger than we could fight and we weren't willing to put ourselves out there to be made to look stupid if people weren't willing to investigate this thing and be open to it."

SNIP

"For the Free Republic we were a dream come true; they made it their mission to take us down. Apparently we were not supposed to think like this because we play country music."

You should only wrap aluminum around the drumsticks of Butterball turkeys and cook on low heat. If you don't follow the directions properly, you end up with a half-baked turkey like the one in the picture.

Arguably, a yodelling skanky bimbo fronting for the Gramscian Left might be scarier.

Actually, organised is the way they spell it in Austrailia and Britian.
Also practice, is spelled practise.

The vitriol directed, by Maines, at President Bush, was part of a left-wing conspiracy. The left-wing conspiracy is far vaster than any right-wing conspiracy could be, since it includes most of the MSM, most of the movie industry, most of the music industry, most unions, most of the "education" community, etc.

What is amazing is that there are many millions of Americans who now understand this, thanks to the Internet. Viva la Internet!!!

I spent 18 months as a co-driver on a moving van, with a guy who had every Slim Whitman album, on 8-track, ever recorded.
I fancy myself a country music officianado, but I had never heard of Slim Whitman until I got in that truck.
Apparently, he's very popular in Great Britain and most of civilized Europe.
I have Hank Jr., and Boxcar Willie's rendition of "Ramblin In My Shoes"

Am I mistaken or didn't she attend Berkeley? If so, there is a bad ad right there.

That would be the Berklee School of Music in Boston. It's a very prestigious school of music.

. . . and boycott the radio stations that played it.

Sorry, sweetie, but your right of free speech doesn't require that I have to agree with you, take you seriously, or even listen to you.

People who don't understand the freedom of speech because they don't understand how to think for themselves. Thinking is too rigorous, and it's easier just to be a contrarian to create the impression that you have an intellect and firmly held beliefs about anything. That's the popular left.

"An organised group known as the Free Republic set out to bring the band down."

Yes, I believe that was the 'Night we drove ol' dixie chicks down, and all the bells were ringing . . . '

Free speech is a two-way street.
