Not Ready to Make Nice (Dixie Chicks in Australia, STILL Whining About Free Republic)
AdelaideNow ^ | Sunday, October 8, 2006 | Kirsten Heyson

Posted on 10/07/2006 1:04:19 PM PDT by kristinn

It's hard to believe this petite, well-mannered Texan - sitting opposite in a Sydney harbourside hotel - caused the kind of stir the music industry has not seen since John Lennon sang about being crucified in 1969.

It's the day before the band's first Australian concert on their Accidents and Accusations world tour.

Maines looks younger than her 31 years.

SNIP

Aware she may sound "bizarre", the 31-year-old believes the vitriol directed at The Dixie Chicks was part of a right-wing conspiracy.

An organised group known as the Free Republic set out to bring the band down.

The organisation's power, she says, comes through the internet. The site has thousands of subscribers, all of whom were encouraged to destroy the band's music and boycott the radio stations that played it.

"It's scary how much power they do have," she says. "They can take down someone singlehandedly and I don't think Americans are aware of that.

"It's the same group that went after (former US president) Bill Clinton and (gay actress) Ellen DeGeneres."

In the beginning, Maines says, they tried to fight their detractors. Their management tried to alert radio station programmers to what was happening.

"But they weren't open to it and just thought we were grasping at straws to try and salvage something," she says.

"It was just bigger than we could fight and we weren't willing to put ourselves out there to be made to look stupid if people weren't willing to investigate this thing and be open to it."

SNIP

"For the Free Republic we were a dream come true; they made it their mission to take us down. Apparently we were not supposed to think like this because we play country music."

Is she dressed as a baked potato for Halloween in that picture? Good God realize what you look like before going out in public.

Yeah even the spiders - check out Funnel Web Spider - they can bite through shoes.

We really NEED the Serbs in the Balkans more than ever.

The battle of Kosovo should be commemorated by the expulsion of all Muslims from European soil and the return of Hagia Sophia to the Orthodox Church as a Christian place of worship.

May heaven damn the Clintons.

Presumably Maines has never heard about the travails of Sinead O'Connor who found out first hand how troublesome it can be to venture into the affairs of a higly placed person.

Who's Sinead O'Connor? - that's the result as well as the question. A couple of years from now there will also be the question "Who's Natalie Maines?" Deal with it beeyatch!

Amen brother. My mother still hates Clintoon for attacking her people. God I love the lady. But it will not happen until we get the UN "peacekeepers" out of there. I still don't understand why the antiwar dummies haven't been protesting Kosovo or our involvement in the Balkans that is still present today. I guess selective outrage allows them to sleep when a Democrat attacks an ally but get their panties in a wad when a Republican attacks a group that has threatened an end to our way of life.

I look forward to visiting Australia one day. The wildlife alone has my adrenaline pumping.

Reminds me of the Katrina Gore (Al's daughter) story I posted some months back...

AL Gore bumped into Avenue magazine editorial director Pamela Gross the other day at the Regency, where she told him his daughter will be on the May cover. Karenna told Avenue that during the Florida recount in 2000, "the rancor was overwhelming at times . . . There was this horrible mob outside the vice president's house that was recruited by political operatives. They just kept yelling, 'Get out of [Dick] Cheney's house.' That was really painful and rude."

The Dixie Twits are doing poorly 'cause they got crappy music and because they told about half of their fan base to bug off

Not quite. The music is good, sadly. And the fraction of the fan base they told to bug off is more like 80%, judging by the drop in album sales.

The Chicks appear, annoyingly, on the Sesame Street Video, "All Star Alphabet" (they do the letter "B"). And I've seen enough music, and played enough myself, to understand the dynamics of playing together; there's a dynamic among the people that is palpable, although hard to explain. It's totally missing with the Chicks, at least on that video. Although the music was technically well executed and sounded good, I got the sense that the other two chicks do NOT like Natalie AT ALL.

I predict a band breakup. The other 2 will dump Natalie someday.

ive been here every week since 1998, and I don't remember anyone going after Ellen. She seems nice enough..never noticed her being a nasty woman..

You're right - are the chicks are trying to make this a "gay" thing? It's not. Unless there's something about the chicks we don't know... Ellen's show wasn't good, but she's a funny stand-up. Smells like a red herring ...

Why their career really tanked, in Maines' own words...

"...but if you live in Lubbock, Texas, where I'm from -- you just have one paper and one radio station and unless you're savvy on the Internet, that's it for you. If Bush said get a gun and kill an Arab, they would do that."

After watching this footage, Maines then repeats the president's comment and says, ''What a dumb f---.'' She then looks into the camera, as if addressing Bush himself, and reiterates, ''You're a dumb f---.''

"The entire country may disagree with me, but I don't understand the necessity for patriotism," Maines resumes, through gritted teeth. "Why do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why? You can like where you live and like your life, but as for loving the whole country… I don't see why people care about patriotism."

"I'd rather have a small following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith. We don't want those kind of fans. They limit what you can do."

"Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

When someone insults their fan base, how can they expect those same fans to buy their music and attend their tours?
Not buying their music is no more censorship than a liberal not buying a conservative's work.
How many liberals bought a copy of Ann Coulter's "Godless"?
It's not censorship.
It's just common sense.

Still missing the point entirely, Natalie. You have every right to believe what you want to believe. You chose to dis our Commander in Chief overseas during wartime. That's just WRONG. (Had you had the guts to say it in front of a TEXAS audience, you may have garnered some respect, but your actions were cowardly and traitorous.) We, as free Americans, choose to keep our money, instead of giving it to you. We have the right to do that. Don't forget, you called your listeners idiots, and said you don't need them. It's YOUR fault you're a failing act now, not FR.

And don't forget the Sydney Funnel Web spider. I recall seeing a special on them on Discovery, or some such channel. They're extremely aggressive, and tend to roam around. The show said that people had been bitten, trying to swat them with brooms. They will actually dodge the swat, leap onto the broom, run up the handle, and try to bite the swatter (if you don't get it first)!

Ann Coulter said it best when she said (paraphrased) that the only wars the left support are those that are not in the interest of the US. When a war is in the interest of the US, the left opposes it. And that's NOT something new. Looking back in history, the left was vehemently against US participation in WWII. Only after Hitler attacked Stalin and the Soviet Union did they come on board. Of course, once Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, they supported the war, but again, only because The Soviet Union had been attacked beforehand.

I can't speak to the video you mention, but a few years ago, before the "incident," CBS did a special on the Dixie Chicks, where (I think) Mike Wallace interviewed them) and they broadcast a DC concert. That show made me run out and buy the trio's CD, and I really liked it. They're very talented, and they were really terrific in concert.

But, as has been mentioned more than once here, "if you find yourself in a hole, you might want to quit digging." It seems that Natalie just can't shut up - sort of like Bill Clinton. And each time she opens her mouth, she reopens old wounds. You're probably right that the sisters are getting fed up with Natalie. But they probably also realize that had they never dumped their original singer/bassist Laura Lynch and brought in Natalie, they never would have enjoyed the success they had over the next 5 years or so.

So, they're sort of between a rock and a hard place.

Mark
