According to NY Daily News and ESPN.
We'll be glad to take him in Texas!!!
Now that is quick.
And probably a lie as well!
You can say that again!
Do you have a link?
You're a lunatic all right!!! :)
No link yet, breaking on ESPN- they've reported it 3 times in the last 10 minutes.
Looking at a story on how bad A-Rod's been. As a Boston fan, no tears shed here.
NO!!! Not Joe .. that Steinbrenner... jeesh.
Damn...guess I'll have to turn on the TV. Apologies for saying it was a lie Lunatic.
Meaning the story is running on ESPN. Still waiting for the news.
This is BS! Billy Martin got the job.
New York needs to do something to wake the dead. If they are going to hire a bunch of mercenaries to play the game, they better get someone to bust some balls.
STEINBRENNER: You know as painfull as it is I had to let a few people go over the years. Yogi Berra, Lou Pinella, Bucky Dent, Billy Martin, Dallas Green, Dick Howser, Bill Virdon, Billy Martin, Scott Marrow, Billy Martin, Bob Lemmon, Billy Martin, Gene Michael, Buck Showalter, uh, tut!, . . .George, you didn't hear that from me. [George exits] . . . George!
That didn't take long...
If anyone should be gone its B. Cashman (although I heard he's married to one of the Steinbrenner chicks?) &/or #13.
Four hours after they were eliminated by the Detroit Tigers, the New York Yankees pulled up to Yankee Stadium in three buses late Saturday night, greeted by fewer than a dozen fans.
With as many police as supporters on hand, most of the players quickly went to their cars and drove away. Manager Joe Torre could be seen, along with Mariano Rivera, Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Robinson Cano, Mike Mussina and Mike Myers.
Backup infielder Andy Phillips was the only player who talked with reporters.
"I don't think we've even comprehended what's just happened in the last few hours, much less to think about what's ahead," Phillips said. "I think it's kind of the usual emotion that you would expect: guys frustrated and disappointed."
I just checked ESPN, couldn't find anything...
Why don't they just change their name to Mariners? They've got every player we ever had that was worth anything, and now Lou.
So Ichiro isn't worth anything?
They never got Edgar. He had too much class.
Sports Troll
nothing on espn.com or nydailynews.com
Sporting News Radio is reporting the same thing, that is that Torres been fired and Pinilla [sp] will be the new coach.
nothing on sportingnews.com either . . . .
TV is still faster than the Internet. Like I said, it's been reported three times on SportsCenter in the last 30 minutes.
I would watch sportcenter or ESPNnews, but I don't want to see the dodgers highlights. the game itself was painful enough.
good move. and ditch AROD too.
NY loves Lou.
Heard it on Sporting News Radio. Hopefully they've confirmed it and it's not just a rumor.
I stopped following baseball years ago once REAL sportsmen died out. These guys are not sportsmen , they are movie star type junkies who charge the parents of little kids $50 to sign an autograph. Could care less if the cancelled all baseball tomorrow. Are there any Americans on baseball teams anymore by the way ?
Why am I not surprised...either that Joe gets canned or Steinbrenner brings back Sweet Lou.
ESPN: Daily News says Torre is LIKELY to be replaced. It's not a done deal yet.
Apparently sources are saying that Torre can quit to save face or be fired.
the team had settled into a mode where they had one formula - one trick on the bag - and when that formula didn't show up, they just give up. there is no "scrappy" nature to the team or the managing (Torre). they've gotten stale, and in a short series where momentum is everything, its most obvious.
Figured it might be something like that. The lack of major media sources reporting it made me suspicious.
Heads were likely to roll after the Yankees were eliminated from the postseason by the Tigers, but the opening odds were on Alex Rodriguez going first, not Joe Torre.
According to the New York Daily News, however, the popular New York manager will be fired unless he decides to resign first to save face. Sources say former Yankees player and manager Lou Piniella will be owner George Steinbrenner's choice to replace Torre.
After winning the World Series in four of his first five seasons, Torre has weathered many storms since then, but Saturday's 8-3 loss left him emotional as he pondered his future in the Bronx.
"We felt pretty good about ourselves," he told the Daily News. "But again, that's something for (general manager Brian Cashman) and I and other people to talk about. But right now, it's just &" and choking back tears, he concluded "& it's just tough."
Cashman and most of the front office employees are expected to keep their jobs, the Daily News reports.
Piniella has been rumored to be in contention for the open positions with the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs. He last managed the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to a fifth-place finish in 2005. Piniella began his managerial career with the Yankees in 1986. That team finished second in the AL East, the best result of his three seasons in the Bronx.
Piniella went on to win the World Series as skipper of the Cincinnati Reds in 1988, however. After three years with the Reds, he managed the Seattle Mariners from 1993-2002 and the D-Rays for the next three seasons.
Torre has won more than 1,000 games as manager of the Yankees, but after beating the Mets in the 2000 World Series, the Bronx Bombers have fallen short of always high expectations despite the highest payroll in baseball.
Torre has one season and $7 million left on his contract.
Yankee hater.
that's fair, they should give him the chance to resign.
George Costanza.
I wasen't being sarcastic.
Big Mistake. Steinbrenner will regret it if he's smart enough.
