TEHRAN (Reuters) - A senior Shi'ite Muslim cleric who has challenged Iran's system of clerical rule was arrested on Sunday after his supporters clashed with police outside his house in the Iranian capital, Iranian news agencies reported.
Ayatollah Mohammad Kazemeini Boroujerdi was detained with several supporters, Iran's student news agency ISNA quoted the deputy governor of Tehran, Abdollah Rowshan, as saying.
The Iranian authorities are wary of any challenge, particularly from top clerics, to the system of clerical rule that was established after the 1979 Islamic revolution by revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Let's try that again....He would have been dead yrs ago if he was
Check with freeper FARS, he may able to help.
Lord, please deliver him supernaturally or via mass uprisings!
Do you know what sparked the rebellion by this cleric and those who agree with him?
According to the original report from an Iranian radio station, this cleric was calling on Iranians to rise up and throw off the government that is oppressing them with religious edicts. He stated that the state and the religion must be two seperate entities, not ONE like it is now.
I have no problem with someone praying that the people of Iran might have a chance at something better than the hellhole they live in now, with the Ayatollahs arresting, maiming, imprisoning, torturing and killing them for any deviation from their religious edicts, which cover EVERYTHING, since state and religion are ONE AND THE SAME.
You can't be that narrow. People pray for everyone and prayer is what's needed... no matter your religion. If you have a problem with that... please expand.
If anyone looks at the situation within and out of Iran... and doesn't see the need or relevance, that's real sad.
Maybe this will help some. I pray that we don't have to nuke Iran because the people will be the ones to suffer, while the big shots should care less.
That's the link I pinged jveritas to up the thread for translation (if he knows anyone). BRB, I have to hit the Iranian bloggers that are still free.
Can you please translate this for us?
If someone who isn't a Christian rejects my prayers, it is of no consequence. Because when I pray, I'm praying to God, the Father of Jesus... and HIS work in reaching anyone's soul, even that of an infidel, is POSSIBLE.
Time to hit them with request for visits to the prisoners by Red Cross (Crescent), Amnesty International, and all that crap we have to deal with to make sure these prisoners are not being mistreated.
Do you have some recent links? I've been out of touch.
So far Al Rueters is the only news outlet with a story about it.
Don't look for anything from cbsnbcabcmsnbccnn etc.
So I if I read this thread right, all Moslems are not really bad? Apparently there are some that FReepers find acceptable in the religion of hate.
How can that be?
In general, popular revolutions against authoritarian governments only work in civilized countries (Russia, East Germany). They tend to fail in uncivilized countries (like China) where the troops have no problem with firing on their own people.
One wonders on which side of this fence Iran falls. I suspect the latter.
Oh, I didn't realize that./s And? When it's time for the ticket to get punched, so be it. Would a relativist get their death any slower?
For a moment I thought you were equating prayer for others as zealotry at the same level as cutting off heads, IEDs and funding terror.
We could care less if they accept the prayers or what they think... that's not the point.
Since it offends you... let's talk worldly solutions, by all means. Obviously, I know nothing of Iranian clerics.
Then you should be right along side of those praying that the Muslims trying to reform and tamp down the nutcases succeed.
