Rep. Kolbe saw Foley messages in 2000
Washington Post ^ | 11-9-06 | Jonathon Weisman

Posted on 10/08/2006 7:37:23 PM PDT by dogbyte12

Another Republican congressman knew of disgraced former representative Mark Foley's inappropriate Internet exchanges as far back as 2000 and personally confronted Foley about his communications.

A spokeswoman for Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-Ariz.) confirmed yesterday that a former page showed the congressman Internet messages that had made the youth feel uncomfortable with the direction Foley (R-Fla.) was taking their e-mail relationship. Last week, when the Foley matter erupted, a Kolbe staff member suggested to the former page that he take the matter to the clerk of the House, Karen Haas, said Kolbe's press secretary, Korenna Cline.

source with direct knowledge of Kolbe's involvement said the messages shared with Kolbe were sexually explicit, and he read the contents to The Washington Post under condition that they are not reprinted. But Cline denied the source's characterization, saying only that the messages had made the former page feel uncomfortable. Nevertheless, she said, "corrective action" was taken. Cline said she still has not yet determined whether that action went beyond Kolbe's confrontation with Foley.

Oh boy. The openly gay congressman knew in 2000, actually seeing the emails, and just chatted with Foley about it, not bringing it to the leadership. He is retiring btw.

Read the story. Graphic IM's. Kolbe saw them in 2000, and just told Foley to stop. He didn't tell the leadership. Kolbe has known for six years. He didn't tell Delay or Hastert at the time.

So are the Dims now going after ALL gay repesentatives?

this will be interesting...they are pro gay, unless it is more political to be anti gay...hmmm, very interesting for both parties.

That is not my first thought here. My first thought honestly is that Jim Kolbe allowed multiple pages to be abused for six years, because he didn't want to make a fellow gay republican look bad, so he didn't do the right thing and tell the leadership, and tell the ethics committee but kept it to himself.

We need a change in Republican leadership!

Does not pass the smell test. First of all, why would a page take a complaint about a "closeted" homosexual to one who was less careful?

Unless, of course, they are all "gay" and this is just a lovers' spat of the sort homosexuals are known for ~ particularly with two older queens fighting over "young stuff".

You know people write stage plays about this stuff and draw audiences to put down good money to watch it.

Only it's not fiction.

"Former page" again. Probably an adult at the time and, again, nothing actionable.

This is getting very tiresome.

And if a creepy gay guy is sending you creepy messages, why would your first step be to the other gay Republican Congressman?

WHICH messages -- that's the key.

The original e-mail messages were NOT sexual. One might wonder why he is even bothering sending an e-mail to a page, but there was nothing of sexual nature in them in the least.

If ever there was a circular firing squad we are looking at it. What is the point for Kolbe unless it is self serving. Keep the story alive. Lets relive it every damn day. We got us a bondfire going....hey, let's set the whole damn forest on fire and lets go hiking in the forest. Oh well. It's just the entire direction of the country at stake.

I disagree. From what we know in this article, we don't know much. We don't know of the former page's age at the time.

Kolbe was a page? Is the page program just a clearinghouse for homosexual representatives to get young tail? I mean, are there any straight male pages?

In other words, why does anyone continue promoting this story (on FR) with meaningless postings.

I guess this means that the Dem-losers can keep this Foley nonsense on the front page until Election Day simply by coming up with 30 former Pages, ONE FOR EACH DAY UNTIL NOV.7, all of whom mysteriously had "inappropriate emails, conversations, or IM's with Foley" at some time during the past 20 years.

Investigating "the congressional closet"

In September 1996 The Advocate ran a story titled "On the record," which has been repeatedly cited as the deliberate outing of congressmen Jim Kolbe (pictured) and Mark Foley. Decide for yourself. Here's the original text of that now infamous investigation.

By J. Jennings Moss

An Advocate.com exclusive posted October 6, 2006

On the record

Heated debate over House approval of the antigay Defense of Marriage Act shines a wary spotlight on the congressional closet.

They spoke to their colleagues—and the nation—from experience. They argued that by passing a bill that defines marriage strictly as a union between a man and a woman, the House was trampling on the civil rights of gays and lesbians. They were talking about their own rights as gay men. And everybody knew it.

Are we talking about the "overly friendly" emails, or the graphic text messages?

We have no idea because they were conveniently given to the media by the anonymous source with the condition that they not be reprinted so we have to rely on the media that characterizes the first known set of innocuous emails as 'sordid' to interpret these for us.

But...but...but I though he sent a bunch of email messages to some little page boy and he should resign. Or did he send the emails to someone named Foley demanding that a page boy resign. Crap! I'm confused.

Maybe Kolbe's saying he knew, and that he went to Foley himself, to draw fire away from the Repub leadership?

Or maybe he was trying to keep the leadership out of the loop so that his fellow gay pols could still have access to impressionable young minds in the House Page dormitory?

I don't know.

I do know that all this crap about gay congressmen getting nasty with teenage pages is proving the conservatives' argument that there isn't a whole lot of "normal" in the gay lifestyle choice.

It says INTERNET messages not INSTANT messages.

I suspect the Washington post is trying to confuse the public INTENTIONALLY

It is probably the emails NOT the INSTANT messages.

We have to be VERY careful with this media the next few days. Don't trust the MSM, they are trying to Goebles the story to morph emails into instant messages.

How old was that page that the Dem Studds was cornholing? Didn't he take him to Portugal or something? Double standard - Studds being from Mass. gets reelected 5 times!

16 or 17. And yes, the page did travel to Europe with Congressman Studds (although the page claims he paid his own way).

Most seem to have forgotten this, but Congressman Studds did a lot more than have sex with just one underage male page (who, by the way, told House investigators that although the sex was not coerced, he would rather have had a friendship with Studds without the sex, which he said he "was somewhat uncomfortable with". The page never had gay sex before Studds). The Congressman also hit on two other male pages after getting them drunk - totally unwanted sexual advances. And the House Doorkeeper's office knew about Studds' hitting on the two pages.

People also tend to forget that a number of House Democrats - including many Democrats who would become committee chairmen if the Democrats take control of the House, and the head of the DSCC, Chuck Schumer, didn't vote to raise Studds' penalty from a weak reprimand to censure. If you don't believe me:

Link to downloadable PDF file of 7/20/83 Congressional Record, including Studds Censure
Link to downloadable PDF file of 7/14/83 Congressional Record, including Studds Floor Statement about proposed reprimand

Link to downloadable PDF file of 7/20/83 Congressional Record, including Crane (R) Censure (Compare Crane's remorse to Studds' brazenness)

It seems that all of these pages, (with the possible exception of the one that started this whole mess) were actively involved in some sort of "relationship" with Foley.

Since it was well-known that Foley is gay, then what did they expect?

ONE good reason to post such things is because I am sure the libs have them on their sites, and it is important for conservatives to discuss them and deal with them. Openly.

THAT SAID, I need to remind myself that the MSM has been purposefully obtuse in this matter, such as with all of the unnamed sources, and evidence hidden or long gone... I believe it is better to deal with it, then to just let the other side frame the debate. I trust Hastert. I have seen NO indication he is a dishonorable man. I am furiouser and furiouser over this whole thing. With Foley, with the unnamed sources, ABC, CREW, Mike Rogers, DCCC... I miss Tom Delay...

From The Post article:

In interviews with The Post last week, multiple pages identified Kolbe as a close friend and personal confidante who was one of the only members of Congress to take any interest in them. A former page himself, Kolbe offered to mentor pages and kept in touch with some of them after they left the program, according to the interviews.

Kolbe once invited four former pages to make use of his Washington home while he was out of town, according to an instant message between Foley and another former page, Jordan Edmund, in January 2002. The pages planned to attend a first-year reunion of their page class. But because of a snowstorm, they did not take Kolbe up on his offer, according to one of the four pages.

Cline said one of the youths invited was a former page of Kolbe's. Because the congressman frequently travels on weekends, either to his Arizona ranch or abroad, the house is often available to friends, constituents, staffers and former staff members, such as a former page, she said.

Kolbe, the only openly gay Republican in Congress, is retiring at the end of the year.

I wondered why the Kolbe article (mentioned his friendship with pages) wasn't a news story, then remembered he is RETIRING. It would be a waste of energy for the Dems. FROM my link above: Leider, who never heard rumors about former Rep. Mark Foley, said it's normal for congressmen to send e-mails to former pages. Leider said he and his brother Robert, 25, who was a page in 1999, keep a running friendship with Rep. Jim Kolbe, R-Ariz.
