Police identify man shot during break-in - The suspect dies after being shot by tenant (OR)

Portland police identified a man who was shot and died after he broke into a Southeast Portland apartment Saturday night as 39-year-old Galen Patrick Sloan.

Sloan, who had a lengthy criminal record, was shot by a tenant inside the apartment as he and a companion broke in, said Officer Catherine Kent, a Portland Police Bureau spokeswoman. The three knew one another and had had a previous altercation.

A person inside the apartment called to report the shooting in the 9100 block of Southeast Crystal Springs Boulevard just before 9 p.m. Saturday, and police arrived minutes later, Kent said.

They found Sloan wounded, and transported him to Oregon Health & Science University, where he later died. An autopsy Sunday concluded that Sloan died of two gunshot wounds to the torso.

Witnesses told police that Sloan had a companion, and police spent several hours searching for him before stopping at 1 a.m. Sunday.

During the search, police shut down the area around the apartment complex and prevented residents there from going home, Kent said. Police also activated the Portland Emergency Notification system, calling all of the tenants inside the complex with instructions to stay inside and keep their doors closed.

"Because we locked down the perimeter, it caused disruption," Kent said. "We didn't want to alarm people, but at the same time we didn't want anyone to get hurt."

Police also called TriMet for a bus to park with the heat on, keeping warm any tenants who wanted to wait until police reopened the apartment complex, she said.

Police are still seeking Sloan's companion, who is possibly armed, police said.

Sloan's criminal history includes offenses such as menacing, driving under the influence, burglary, assault and forgery.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detectives Barry Renna at 503-823-0255 or Mike Geiger at 503-823-0768.

I don't see anything about charges for the shooter.

Hmm, I wonder if he died because of the gunshot?

"Hmm, I wonder if he died because of the gunshot?"

I can only hope so.

What kind of a dumbass breaks into an apartment with people inside it?

Guess I answered my own question, a dumbass.

Yup, a lot of us Oregonians have guns. Outside of the large libbie poopulations in Portland and Eugene, we are sane, gun-carrying citizens.

I use to live in Scappoose. My daughter was born at Portland University Hospital almost 12 years ago. It sounds like Oregon is changing for the better!!

He may have died due to the doctors. You never know.

Hmmm. Maybe I'll reconsider my husband and I's move to Lake Oswego. I wasn't looking forward to be swarmed by mass ignoramus libs again.

This article reminds me of the NW spirit I remember from my childhood in Montana, though and that's a good thing. Defending oneself with a gun.

By the way, does anyone know if one can play a decent round of golf in Portland (off the cuff-sorry, but thought I'd ask.). Hope they find that other guy and if they can't shoot, prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

Sorry I meant a decent round of golf year round in Portland. I know they have some fine courses up there.

Actually, Oregon and Washington, even though under communist, er, I mean, dimocRAT rule are very pro gun...outside of the cities that is.

I didn't recognize that as the case when I lived there 12 years ago. I have been considering relocating to that area again, it's good to know I would be welcome as a CCW holding, 3 gun (so far), single mom of 2 kids, household.

Golf? We have several world-class courses here in Portland and in the surrounding areas. Each year we host the LPGA at Columbia-Edgewater CC and Tiger Woods played his last amateur tournament at Pumpkin Ridge, just a half-hour west of here. The problem isn't in finding a course, it's getting a tee-time. People are flying all the way from Japan for the sole purpose of playing at one of our many courses.

Wow. That is great news. Can one play comfortably in the rain though? With out getting completely and utterly soaked to the bone? We were thinking of making a move, but my husband believe it or not sort of makes his business playing golf year round. So that is one thing that stops us.

Do you live there? If so, what is is like being a conservative in a very obnoxiously liberal at times city? I am not sure I am ready for that. Thanks again for the feedback to.

There's a myth that we in the NW have perpetuated, that being the inordinate rainfall people have to endure. The myth does have some basis in reality - our winters are a bit wet but the rest of the year is really pretty nice. When you consider the hurricanes along the Gulf Coast, the almost total lack of rain in the Southwest, the tornadoes of the midwest, the 'lake effect snowstorms' of the Northeast and the bitter cold of the northern plains. We really have it pretty good.
Right now we've finished up a fairly typical summer and began a similarly typical fall. The temperature outside is in the low to mid 70s and tonight it may fall to the 40s. The earliest freeze on record is October 8th and I don't know what year that was but I don't remember it and I'm 72 years old.
Summers are usually dry to the point of high fire danger in the mountains. Winters seldom bring us any real snow except in the mountains or interior areas. The wettest part of the state is along the coast but two mountain ranges do a pretty good job of squeezing the rain out of weather systems before they get to the eastern part of the state which is quite dry, even allowing cactus to thrive in some areas.
Most of the population is concentrated in the Willamette Valley. The larger cities are also the centers of liberalism, just as on the east coast or anywhere else. Once you get away from the cities you find plenty of conservative people who never cease to complain about how their votes are hardly counted alongside those of Portland, Salem, Eugene, etc.
I live in Portland and - other than the politics - it's a pretty decent place to live. If you get a kick out of whizzing in the cornflakes of the liberals (as I do) you can actually have a ball here.
Gun ownership is a fact of life here. The State has fairly lax regulations regarding carrying of guns and the cities cannot usurp the power to be more strict except with regard to how a gun can be carried. Many cities (Portland included) make it a misdemeanor to carry a loaded gun within the city limits unless you possess a concealed weapons permit or if you are traveling to or from either a shooting range or a hunting trip. Concealed permits are about as easy to get here as anywhere else and many Oregon residents also have Washington permits and vice versa.
Of course, having all these liberals means we also have a lot of golfers which calls for a lot of courses and more than a few golfing equipment stores. I think you will fit in quite well here.
