Giant comet may collide with Earth late October
Pravda ^ | October 6, 2006

According to the Russian astronomer Nikolai Fedorovsky, a giant comet flying at top speed is bound for Earth. Should the comet stay on the collision course, it may hit the planet in late October. The impact will cause devastating tsunamis, earthquakes and avalanches, says Fedorovsky. He saw the killer comet in a telescope two weeks ago. He managed to calculate the comet’s trajectory. We got in touch with Nikolai Fedorovsky:

“I’m not trying to scare anybody, I just want to warn the public,” sums up Fedorovsky. “We should pay attention to this suspicious celestial body. We could obtain more accurate calculations if other astronomers join forces. We could also photograph it if we’re in luck. We will probably partake in one of the greatest events in the history of humankind,”

What the article describes doesn't sound like the end of the world, or even enough to wipe out a whole city, despite the "giant comet" sensationalism. It would be a regional catastrophe. Unless you were very near the impact site, all you'd likely experience would be a very bleary month or two with a weak sun and a reddish moon, then really vivid sunsets for a year or more, and unusually cool winters for several more years after that. Assuming there is only the one, and not another "string of pearls."

Am I the only one who finds it odd that Pravda uses the Saturn V as their standard "really big rocket" unit?

I don't think JS's character had vertigo in that movie -- it feels more like a roller coaster ride combined with the tilt-a-whirl rather than fear of heights.

Maybe it could hit Mecca or San Francisco?

Yes, there are FReepers in SF, although I for one am not there anymore. All I ask is 2 hours notice on FR so the 14 remaining conservatives in SF can sneak out of town, and hush-hush otherwise.

I heard that the Dems want to try to hold talks with the comet before resorting to force.
