That's the problem. The brick wall was pink. The graffiti was black. The city painted over the graffiti with gray or brown paint...as they saw fit. The natural stone color was destroyed forever. Blotches of gray and brown paint obliterate the gang graffiti, but deface the beauty of the wall just as much.
Ar least in the Phoenix area we can call and have the city remove it.
Then send the gang-bangers to Gitmo with the other terrorists.

Oh I agree and I'm not saying the law is a good idea... I'm just refuting the other poster's statement that the article did not say whether the city-provided paint service was free. The article did state that it was free... I think the law is stupid.

Graffiti left on the walls endlessly drives the spiral downward in the neighborhood. When neighborhoods are allowed to rot ... they draw crime.

The city is also trying to prohibit minors from carrying markers on them (and potentially even being able to sell markers to those under 18).

Meanwhile violent crime in Houston has skyrocketed, being unchecked. But it's only taken them 15 years to go after graffiti. In a few generations we'll be able to get back to issues of safety.
The same is also true of potholes. The city does not maintaint ITS properties.
It is pretty tough of them to say "two weeks".
To anarchists, all property is theft.
And you will find political hacks among the graffitios.
Can we fine city council members when we find "STOP Bush" and "STOP the war" graffiti on our STOP signs?

This is the way it's been done in San Francisco for years. The vandals do their dirty work, and the city gives the targets a deadline to paint it over or clean it up or face a fine. As you approach the Bay Bridge on the freeway, you can see how the graf thugs are now emboldened to make their way to rooftops and billboards to leave their quasi-artistic garbage. Business owners are just now starting to fight back.
The Board of Stupidvisors in Sin Freaksicko have a soak-the-rich mindset that spills over into the middle class often. They seem to think that businesses will continue to locate here and will pay a premium in taxes, fees and punitive fines to do so. They didn't learn a thing from Bank of America moving its headquarters from its Financial District birthplace to Charlotte, NC.
Yes, if someone can't afford to buy new wheels for weeks on end, then he shouldn't be penalized for having been the victim of crime. I'm sorry if it offends your sensibilities to see a car on blocks for several weeks. I wouldn't like seeing it either, but I'd rather see the car on blocks than further victimize someone who couldn't afford new wheels and tires. If it bothers you that much, maybe you should help the guy out by either loaning him the money for the new wheels and tires or renting him a storage unit for a while. Having the government fine him or steal the rest of his car isn't the solution to the problem. Putting the results of the theft out of view may help some people to ignore the ugly reality of rising crime, but letting some people ignore that reality isn't a solution either.
