Police find 60 bodies in Baghdad

Sixty bodies have been found scattered across the Iraqi capital Baghdad, police there have said.

A car bomb has also exploded near a Sunni mosque in a southern district of the city, killing 11 people.

The bomb attack comes a day after 10 people were killed in a car bombing at a market in the capital.

It also coincides with the release of new figures indicating that an estimated 300,000 Iraqis have fled their homes due to sectarian violence.

Attacks have increased between Iraq's majority Shia Muslims and the Sunni minority, who dominated the country until the fall of Saddam Hussein.

Executions

The 60 bodies, who were all men, were found in various parts of the city over a 24-hour period, defence and interior ministry officials said on Tuesday.

Many of them had been shot in the head at close range, execution-style.

The victims also had their hands and feet bound and showed signs of torture - hallmarks of death-squad killings, the police said.

Tuesday's bomb was placed under a car near a mosque in the district of Doura, killing 11 bystanders standing outside a bakery, police said.

The bomb - which also injured at least four people - exploded at about 1100 GMT.

Displaced families

The sustained sectarian violence has seen more than 50,000 Sunni and Shiite families - around 300,000 people - flee their homes, according to figures released by Iraqi minister for migration, Dr Abd al-Samad Rahman.

Some fled their homes after receiving direct threats while others simply felt threatened and moved to areas where their own sect predominates and they feel safer.

The flight is continuing, especially in parts of Baghdad and Diyala province, north-east of the capital.

I guess they 'prey to god' by day and kill fellow muslims by night. These guys are just animals. Perhaps it's time to move to the army to the western border of Iran (preventing infiltrations), put an emphasis on guarding the shipping lanes, and oil fields, and just let the Sunni's and Shiites have the big bloodletting they are obviously preying for.

Putting all PC aside, I just have to pass on this story.

I have a relative who back in 2003 said we shouldn't go into Iraq simply because the Iraqi's are just too stupid to appreciate freedom. He actually said they were 'sand monkey's' only with less common sense. I was so offended (and idealistic about human freedom) I stormed out of the room.

I'll tell you what after all the murder and beheadings and the people just standing around doing nothing to help themselves....well.....maybe they are stupid sand monkey's and maybe I owe an uncle an apology.

I'll give it until the end of the year until after the election season passes before I eat crow.

I too was once hopeful for the Iraqi people, but I think your uncle was right. We are watching the Iraqi people actively piss away a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I am about to say some harsh words here... These people don't want freedom, democracy or peace. What they want is for their own tribe/sect to dominate. Granted, there are some good people there who want to build their country, but most of them seem to be totally apathetic about improving their own condition. I will give the situation until the end of 2007. If the Iraqi's can't settle their differences by then I say we pull out and let them kill each other. They simply aren't worth the trouble, effort or expense. They NEED a fascist dictator to control their complete savagery.

I know a guy who was over there and his job was to help good Irag guys win elections.

He said in every other part of the world politicians run on issues. Muslims vote for who ever their iman tells them to.

The concept of democracy is wasted on them.

I've heard similar ideas. Condi Rice noted that this attitude makes her shudder because it reminds her of what people used to say about Black people. Just remember that the bad apples always get the press. Imagine what America looks like to people in other countries.

You're right. In order for democracy to take hold, one must have some sense or some vision of national pride. I spent about seven months over there and assume that Iraqis think in terms in the following priotity: immediate family, tribal clan, religion. The term national pride does not mean anything to the majority of people who were under Saddam's thumb. There is a very small, yet very enlightened, population that holds out hope. We understand the concept of identifying with a country, they identify with two splits in Muslim ideology and kill each other over it. On the other hand, I look at my framed extra ballot from the first election and am proud to see democracy in action. Your friend should have some atta-boy attitude is seeing the next to impossible - safe elections - being accomplished.

That is not what the moderator said. He said 'retread'. I'm not exactly sure what that is - I think multiple identities.

This was Pres. Bush's big gamble from the get-go, that the middle east was ready for freedom and democracy. Liberals certainly didn't argue the point at the time. It looks like he was overly optimistic and positive about that.

I still wonder if things would have worked out for the better if we had taken out Al-Sadr early on when he was wanted on a murder charge.
