Oh, for the Simple Days of the Big Bang
The New York Times ^ | October 8, 2006 | GEORGE JOHNSON

Posted on 10/10/2006 8:27:08 PM PDT by DaveLoneRanger

FOURTEEN years ago, when a Berkeley astronomer named George F. Smoot declared that he and his satellite, the Cosmic Background Explorer, or COBE, had detected the astrophysical equivalent of the fingerprints of God, his euphoria was easy to understand. For a few happy years, one of the last big pieces of the cosmological puzzle seemed to be in place — an explanation why the universe has blossomed into such an interesting place to live.

Had it not been for the whorls and dimples Dr. Smoot and his NASA collaborator, John C. Mather, found in the background radiation — the afterimage of the Big Bang — there would be no cosmic scenery. No galaxies or other vast conglomerations of matter, just a smooth expanse of visual nothing. Kansas instead of Colorado.

Subsequent discoveries have muddled the picture, so much so that last week’s announcement that the two men will share a Nobel Prize in physics was almost bittersweet — an occasion to celebrate a pivotal moment in science but also to look back with nostalgia on more innocent times.

It's good to see more general acknowledgment that the current models simply don't work. Hopefully the pieces will be assembled in my lifetime.

Romans 11
33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?
35 Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?
36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

Great quotes from the Bible! Thanks!

Some more wisdom from the Bible:

Isaiah 16:11

Wherefore my bowels shall sound like a harp for Moab, and mine inward parts for Kirharesh.

Ezekiel 23: 21, (NRSV)

and lusted after her paramours there, whose members were like those of donkeys, and whose emission was like that of stallions.

Someone told me once the big bang was caused by energy slowing down which to me made sense since mass going twice (is it twice?) the speed of light turns into energy, E=MC2...So if all that existed at one point was energy and no mass, when that energy dropped below C2, wouldn`t it "bang" into mass and all the forces that come with it, gravitation, electromagnetic, etc etc...What I don`t understand though, is if all that existed was energy, how could it "slow" down if there is no universe, space or time? What caused it to slow down? Was it speeding along then all of a sudden had a vision of Helen Thomas naked in bed? WHOOOOA HORSEY! Retreat retreat! Run away!

...since mass going twice (is it twice?) the speed of light turns into energy, E=MC2...

Ah, no. The actual equation is E=MC2... so it is the speed of light multiplied NOT by 2 but multiplied by the speed of light.

Why is there such an expectation that the universe should have been so smooth and uniform after the bang?

Take a hundred pennies, put them in a bag and dump them on the floor. The odds are high indeed that you won't get exactly 50 heads and 50 tails.

And the bigger the sample, the worse the odds become.

"The more we know, the more we know we don't know?"
These are the known unknowns, as His Excellency the Defense Secretary used to say. But the best part are the unknown knowns - the things that we know, but do not know that we know them. It is precisely about these that one experiences a pleasant joy of discovery, like finding a $20 bill in a shirt pocket when one has completely forgotten that it was there.

Oh yeah, plus I forgot that power means multiplied by itself... It`s been a long time since I did math, but now I understand or remember...For example, Al Gores ego is not twice the size of normal people, but to the power of 2. "Little people! Global warming will destroy us all! Follow me, your lord, and I and only I alone, Al Gore, shall lead you to the green promised land!!"

"there is a multitude of possible universes, each with its own physics. "
That is stupid. There is 1 universe and it is the only one that can exist and its physics is the only one that can exist.

Also, there was never a 'big bang' that was the beginning of the universe.

You still have a problem with your calculations.

The speed of light is not 186,292,260 miles per hour but 186,292.26 miles per second.

That makes it 670,652,136 mph.

If you square that figure you get 449,774,287,521,362,496 mph.

Damn, that is absolutely mind boggling...What is that, 449 trillion MPH?? No, it`s higher than that, what comes after trillion, quadrillion? Man, it`s inconceivable that kind of speed, but it makes me see how mass could turn into energy, I mean what the hell could exist going that fast BUT energy? Just mind blowing stuff, and like you said, the speed of light is per second, and then we get into "light years" which I assume is the distance light travels per year and they always talk about something being MILLIONS of light years away, just such vast distances it`s impossible to fathom. And here I complain having to walk 4 blocks away to the grocery store lol!

One thing is a virtual certainty. They won't ever complete their models as long as new data keep arriving. They already have more data than can be incorporated in their models even with all the computer power on earth.

You know what I don`t understand though, is if energy = mass going at that speed of light, what is energy when it is described as force? Such as "the energy in the bat was transferred to the ball which made the ball fly away"..If energy is mass going at that speed of light, how is it in one place in the bat? I don`t know, I`ll never get a handle on this kind of stuff, its just way over my head. Math was my worst subject in school lol!
