Hamza 'paid £220,000 for house while on legal aid'

Abu Hamza, the radical cleric, bought a house for £220,000 in cash and let it out while receiving legal aid, it was claimed yesterday.

An investigation by the Legal Services Commission has led to a freeze on the sale of the four-bedroom property in Greenford, west London.

Hamza has been claiming legal aid for his fight against allegations of incitement to murder, for which he received a seven-year jail sentence this year.

The bill is thought to come to around £250,000. Nothing has yet been paid.

The former imam of Finsbury Park mosque claims he has "no assets of any sort" and his wife and seven children live in a £600,000 council-owned house in Hammersmith, west London.

His bank accounts were frozen by the Treasury in 2002 after a request from the United Nations Sanctions Committee, which had accused him of helping support terrorism.

But earlier this year a hearing at the Old Bailey was told that a council flat he had purchased under the right-to-buy scheme had been sold in September 2004 for £228,000, while he was on remand.

The house in Greenford was bought the following month and has been let out to Polish workers.

The Daily Telegraph understands that the flat was transferred from Hamza's name to his son's in 2003, exploiting a loophole in Government anti-terrorism regulations. The Legal Service Commission is trying to prove that Hamza still owns the property, which is now registered in the name of Ola Kamel Mostafa, a relative who is thought to live in Egypt.

In a statement the LSC said: "The investigation into Abu Hamza's assets by the Special Investigations Unit to support the granting of a Recovery of Defence Costs Order continues.

"If an RDCO is imposed it will ensure that Abu Hamza pays some, if not all, of the legal costs for his defence against the terrorism charges."

The LSC has also had a court order imposed banning Hamza's wife and his son, Mohammed Kamel from dealing with the Greenford property.

Kamel was jailed in the Yemen in 1999 for an alleged bomb plot and freed three years later.

He was cleared of trying to break into Finsbury Park mosque shortly after it was raided and shut down by police in 2003.

George Osborne, the shadow chancellor, said yesterday: "How can Gordon Brown reconcile what he said this week about opening a new front on terrorism when the action he took four years ago has had no impact, and Abu Hamza is buying property while in prison?"

This scum has been a continual irritant, both in and out of jail.

Hopefully, the next time he is beaten by fellow prisoners the job will be done with considerably more enthusiasm and effectiveness.

blam, we have had this discussion before. Who do you think will be looking for this article by searching for the keywords, "000" or "paid"?

Do you actually envision people looking for this article using those keywords? I don't mean to keep jumping your case, but your last reply indicated you understood that keywords are themes that people might look for, not incomprehensible snippets of the thread headline.

Learn about Islam through pictures. Pretty much self-explanatory.
You might think about passing this around to naive acquaintances.

Remember - VERY GRAPHIC
