New Topic Limitations (Vanity)
Posted on 10/12/2006 3:26:26 PM PDT by DaveLoneRanger
Observing today that we are now limited to four topic/category selections when posting an article. I post articles almost every day, and today was the first I've seen of this, so this was just put in place.
This is less of a question than a notification. It's not an inconvenience to me, although I would like to know why.
Did I miss a mod lecture?

I just went to post and all the topics selections look the same to me. Maybe you have the Beta version or maybe I'm not logged in.

I noticed it also, but I'm of the opinion that if one cannot limit oneself to four topic fields, then one is not reading their descriptions properly.

Make sure you're not confusing them with keywords.
And I do not mean that our topic categories have gone down in number. I mean the number of categories applicable to a particular thread. For example, I usually add the keywords "constitution, crime, culture, extended," and then the state to an armed citizen story. I am now limited to just four, thus, one (probably at this point, "culture") has to be eliminated.
Like I wrote, this is a new change, because it has not been the same way before.

we are now limited to four topic/category selections Due to copyright complaints over duplicate technologies, Free Republic will be limited to four topics only.
- Earth
- Wind
- Fire
- Water
Thank you for your understanding.

Observing today that we are now limited to four topic/category selections when posting an articleInteresting. On another thread, don't recall which one, someone complained about only being able to put in four keywords. But no one else saw the effect.
What's magic about four (4)?

I usually just buzz right thru that part so I am of no help . But, I am speculating that maybe because of troll attacks where the darlings check everything they can find, that the mods set up an early warning system.

I'm sure you know what you're doing and I don't - but sometimes when I've gone to post a thread, I had to go into a different "forum" to post it, as there was no "post new" button on the regular browsing page I use.
I assume it's "News/Activism" where I start, but I know that once I was accidentally already in "General/Chat" or maybe "Crime/Corruption" and I, too, was limited in the choices I had for "topics." Could that be it?

Using special powers granted to me by the FReeper Gods, I'm just back from looking at the programming code for the posting page.
There's been a recent modification which goes (paraphrasing):
If screen name=DaveLoneRanger thenOffer just four topics
elseOffer all topics
So, what makes you so special?

I saw that today myself. Looks like a limit on keywords too, and I can understand why. Too many times we have posters who send whatever it is they want to post, to every available category, with a million different keywords. Go search on "zot" and take a look at what some of the trolls post stuff to...
I believe in brevity. If you cannot confine it to four categories, a quick note to the Admin Mod can certainly solve that for you.

My Son went to Texas with a buddy from College on a bass fishing trip, he brought me back some Shiner Bock.
They nicknamed it Shiner Bucket when he was there.
The beer wasn't bad, but I was warned to stay away from the Gumbo if I ever visited...lol
