Mexicans briefly block bridge leading into El Paso
Corpus Christi Caller-Times/AP ^ | October 12, 2006

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico- A group of activists protesting U.S. immigration policies and proposals to build more border fences briefly blocked three of four lanes of an international bridge leading into El Paso, Texas, on Thursday.

Hundreds of protesters marched for several miles to the Mexican side of the Sante Fe bridge, in the downtown section of Ciudad Juarez, blocking much of the bridge and listening to speeches for about a half hour before withdrawing.

The protesters pledged to stop construction of what they called "The Wall of Death," arguing that it would cause more deaths among migrants seeking to reach the United States.

Speakers at the protest included U.S. activists, and the demonstration snarled the already-heavy traffic at the bridge.

The march served as the kickoff for the First Social Border Forum, which will begin Friday and run through the weekend in Ciudad Juarez. The gathering will discuss the impact of border policies on migrants, the environment and human rights.

Build a big fence. Close the bridges. Man the border.

We don't need a fence. We need politicians who have the guts to stand up and say "Go home, we don't want you here and are going to do everything in our power to make sure you won't/can't stay. No more freebies and no more free passes. We will enforce existing laws and if those don't work, we will pass new laws. Go home."

It is simply a matter of will.

Targets of opportunity. Let the bodies stack up though and they can contribute to the bridge.

After the infusions of 20 to 30 million illegals, I don't think we have an American politician. So we need to move forward with the fence.

More and more, every day or so, when I go into a stop n go mart for coffee, etc. I am saying "La Migre!" Not so loud when I first said it, but it's getting louder every time.....

I look at every illegals' truck, van, car for an outdated registration sticker, etc. just so I can flag down the nearest cop I see. I don't want them to have one minute's peace while they illegally occupy my country.

Instead of taking the easy way out (fence), why not hold the politicians accountable? Maybe that way we would actually start getting some honest men/women in office.

Your way just continues with the status quo. I am sick of it.

I'm sick of it too and want the illegals handled according to the current laws, but that isn't happening quickly enough. In order to make the ones here know their days are numbered, we have to stop the flow and the fence (more like a fortress wall, IMO) will help with this if only in perception. They should be worried EVERY time they step out of their homes...

I stood on that bridge in El Paso and watched immigrants cross the Rio Grande on innertubes. The holes in the US fence that ran along the side of the river were huge.
Young boys waded and pulled the "floaters" across. They then walked down the fence until finding a hole to their liking and crawled through and crossed the railroad tracks to get into El Paso.

The Border Patrol passed by frequently but did nothing to try to move them from the fenceline....wait!! They did drive through mudpuddles and splash water on a few of them.

This sentence reminded me of the tripe published on granma.cu, the official Cuban newspaper. Is the Caller going (more) left-wing? I hope not.

I was arguing with somebody saying that it was pointless to build a fence, because "you can't keep everyone out."

My retort was that, you can't stop all murders, does that mean we should just get rid of police.

And a fence isn't the only answer, it must be backed up with punishing employers, and limiting benefits. You have to make it so that they won't want to come here in the first place, and rather have them fight to make life in their home country better.

False choice. Building an effective border barrier and doing other enforcement measures are not mutually exclusive. We can and should do both. The approaches compliment each other.

Instead of taking the easy way out (fence), why not hold the politicians accountable?

The laws about hiring illegals, no welfare to illegals, ect. have been on the books since Ronald Reagan. I didn't vote for anyone who encouraged illegal immigration in the last election, how about you? I don't intend to vote for illegal enablers this time either.

Your way just continues with the status quo. I am sick of it.

How can you be sick of a fence that has never been tried?

The wall might cause more deaths if mexicans are left with the impression they can make it through. If, for instance, it was internationally known that a 1/4 mile-wide minefield existed, lives would actually be saved. Because everyone would know it was futile to try crossing.
