Local pianist accused of BWI bomb threat
Baltimore Sun ^ | October 13, 2006 | Josh Mitchell

Posted on 10/14/2006 5:03:50 AM PDT by George - the Other

Pianist George Spicka and his singing partner were booked to play the lounge at Baltimore's Tremont Park Hotel on Wednesday night, with a set list of smooth jazz numbers and pop hits that included "Just the Way You Are." Spicka never made the gig.

Instead the composer and recording artist who has performed in the area for years found himself under arrest and in Anne Arundel County - accused of e-mailing a bomb threat to Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

This article is about me.

I've been a supporter of the police and Homeland Security, but as several of my friends have commented, the behavior of the Maryland Transportation Authoriety Police resembles the Gestapo.

In regard to the Sunpaper's story about my arrest, I want to point out the vagueness of transportation authority police Cpl Jonathan Green’s, statement about my seized computer when he says that authorities "are learning more and more as we go." What they should have already learned by now is that there were no threatening emails sent from my computer. That is what matters.

Concerning, “The threatening e-mail was linked to a computer user with strong views about politics and Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.,” I have bumper stickers on one of my cars that support both Bob Ehrlich and Michael Steele. During the previous election, I contributed to the Ehrlich/Steele campaign and attended a rally in Arbutus. Because of my support for both candidates, I regularly receive emails from ecampaign@gop.com, kenmehlman@gop.com, and political@mdgop.org. I’ve requested a sign for Michael Steele to be placed in my yard. Two months ago I performed at a function for Maryland state employees where Steele was the guest speaker. I shook his hand and wished him luck in the election.

Of all the fraudulent statements and misquotes in the charging documents, and I feel the most damning of all is where they accuse me of being "politically outspoken," which I am. That's why I participate in the Free Republic Forum. In the American I grew up in, this was not against the law. In fact, it was because of being politically outspoken that we broke away from England, creating our own constitution which guarantees the right to free speech.

As this matter proceeds with the hearing and trial, what will become apparent is that if authorities had indeed truly conducted a thorough and competent investigation, they would have discovered that I did not send those threatening emails. What will also become clear is that this is a clear situation of abuse of power by an over-zealous government agency. Considering that a supporter of President Bush was falsely arrested and imprisoned as a result of the President’s policies, critics of President Bush and his policies will have a field day.

Sincerely,

George F. Spicka Baltimore, MD

Did I miss the premise of the situation?  Are they saying you're some nut job who sent the threat out of the blue, or was there some incident which was supposed to have gotten you mad enough to send the email?

"what will become apparent is that if authorities had indeed truly conducted a thorough and competent investigation, they would have discovered that I did not send those threatening emails."

Do you know who did? Or what makes them think they have a case if you didnt? Does someone else have access to your email account? Just asking the obvious, good luck.

Regardless of the reason that the Feds traced the emails to George - The Other's computer, it is in the Sun because he is a supporter of Ehrlich and Steele.

I am sure that had he been a supporter of O'Malley, caught in the same way, it never would have made the 'news.'

Also, another thing Orwell warns about is the wordiness of leftist writings, and how truth is propagandized and distorted for political gain by what (sic) on the surface to the unperceptive appears to be "intellectually" inspired literature.

Isn't this from your blog?

I hope this turns out OK. Based on what I read in the article, they knew a lot about you before this "event". Who did you tick off?

Wow. That's quite a story.

Going back and reading the Baltimore SUn article in full, the following sentence:

he threatening e-mail was linked to a computer user with strong views about politics and Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., according to court records.

appears to set forward their evidence. They looked for someone with a user name "Orwell" and found you, and you also lived in the Baltimore area, and you were pokitically "active" i.e., a freeper.

Hmmm

And checking your computer, it would appear, did not produce any further evidence? If yes, and (better yet) if you can account for your whereabouts and actiities at the time in question, then it would appear that they really don't have a case.

Did they offer any further evidence in their chraging documents?

I understand all that but law enforcement officers tend to understand that actions like those being alleged don't usually occur in a vacuum.

I'm wondering what the alleged catalyst was.

Or if Georges computer was proxy'd and the Feds went after him based solely on a proxy'd IP address.

It sounds like the police took the e-mail name, "George Orwell", and just looked for other people using similar user-names, and cross-referenced to the Baltimore area -- and then looked for 'politically active' people.

Sounds like a legit investigative process, but not in itself enough to support a charge, but enough to support a search warrant.

So they searched his computer -- did that produce further incriminating evidence or not?

Hi,

There was no incident. I'm well known in Baltimore arts/music circles and all will tell you I'm a friendly, easy going person.

It probably is. I'm a big fan of Orwell's essays. Also, I like your tag line. A good friend of mine has a black pug that could be the "evil" twin.

The arresting said that Homeland Securiety gave him the "right" to do this.

It was on your blog from March of this year. Ironic.

Pugs are too funny. Mine entertains me all the time.

The charging documents are full of fraudlent statements and misquotes. For example, they claimed they saw me "rush" back to my computer, as if I were trying to hide evidence. Actually, I was rushing out to get the collar for my dog, a pit bull. In order to try to get me to confess to something I didn't do, they threatened to shoot my dog. They claimed my computer had a message on it that I had removed a data device, which one office told me was a USB "module". I told him I didn't know what a USB "module" was. Even after searching me and spending hours searching the house, as their charging documents say, though couldn't any data device, which is the excuse they used to steal my computer. They also "lost" my cell phone while I was locked up.

Wasn't there some computer message spoofing involved in the last Maryland Governor's campaign, by some Dem operatives? Who remembers that story?

First, I recommend that you promptly change your Email account password. If you didn't send the messages then there would seem to be three immediate possibilities:

1) Someone is spoofing your Email address. That should be easy to prove because the IP won't be correct for the sending Email server.

2) Someone has access to your Email account. Unfortunately Email account passwords are normally sent in plain text meaning they are easy to steal. If you've used a public Internet portal to access your accounts that is fraught with danger. If you use a WiFi network at home it is an absolute must that encryption be enabled. Even better restrict the network MAC addresses that are allowed to access your network to only those you have.

3) Someone has access to your computer. Work for example.

Considering what the state of Md. did to Linda Tripp, this episode seems along the same lines. If you'd been an outspoken Liberal, none of this would have happened. Good luck.
