Harold Ford and the Church-Playboy Flap (Tennessee Senate race)
NRO ^ | 10/15/06 | Byron York

Posted on 10/15/2006 6:05:21 PM PDT by freespirited

One minor argument in the Tennessee Senate race is over Rep. Harold Ford's reported attendance at a Super Bowl party thrown by Playboy magazine in Jacksonville in 2005. Republicans, who note that Ford has taped a campaign ad inside a church, accuse him of hypocrisy — of partying with Playmates and then promoting himself as a man of faith. Today, Ford was asked about it on ABC's "This Week":

STEPHANOPOULOS: Republicans put up an ad calling you a hypocrite.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

ANNOUNCER: Harold Ford says...

FORD: I won't let them make me someone I'm not.

ANNOUNCER: Fair enough. So what kind of man parties with Playboy playmates in lingerie, then films political ads from a church pew?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

STEPHANOPOULOS: Churchgoer by day, playboy at night?

FORD: I've never been to a Playboy mansion party.

Today, the Republican party in Washington sent out a terse response: "The party Congressman Ford attended was the Playboy Super Bowl Party in Jacksonville." That is, it was a Playboy party, reportedly with Playmates and lingerie, just not at the Playboy mansion, which is in California.

By the way, after his "Playboy mansion" answer, Ford continued:

I'm just not going to take morality lessons from a party — the National Republican Committee is running it — from a party that took hush money from a child predator. I mean, I'm just not going to sit back and allow them to try to characterize or make me something I'm not.

Sorry. I may get slammed for this comment. But aren't black liberals used to hypocritical opportunists who use the church for advancement (Jesse, Al, etc.,)?

I have plenty of issues with Derek Jeter's evil twin, but this one falls flat with me. Who's to say he's not a man of faith because he attended this party? Maybe he prayed for an invitation and had it answered.

Ford may have flunked the bar exam, but he aced the course on lawyerese doublespeak and evasion of answering a question by deflecting the argument away from them and back on the accuser.

Reminds me of Emanuel's answer when questioned whether he had knowledge of the Foley affair: (Par.) "I never saw the emails until now." Over and over and never answered the question directly.

Of William, how right you were: "First we kill all lawyers." Of course, we no longer would have a Congress, which might not be such a bad thing.

Did he grab any body parts? Was there nudity, sex or illegal substances? Look, I certainly am not defending the Hefner "empire" or soft porn. But, come on, get serious. They are trying to position anyone that is a Christian as a hypocrite if they don't live up to an unattainable image of perfection and purity. It's total cr*p

When challenged, Ford ALWAYS goes to the Clinton Playbook.

Deflect the question with self-righteous indignation!

"You don't deserve to be on this stage with my wife, Hillary". BILL CLINTON to Jerry Brown

"how dare you ask such a question after I've introduced this fine woman, Ruth Bader Ginsberg."
BILL CLINTON to Brit Hume

And all the finger pointing Clinton gave to Chris Wallace, same tactic.

"Don't you dare bad mouth my family. I love my family"
HAROLD FORD when asked about his corrupt family.

"I"m not going to let anyone lie about me going to the Playboy Mansion"

LOL at how slick southern politicians continue to get away with this crap.

It isn't the fact that he went to the party. It's that he is trying to dissemble by saying that he was never at the Playboy Mansion.
I have no problem with his going to the party (not something I would do, but...)
I do have a problem with him trying to mislead voters. If he'll mislead (or lie) about something that trivial, how can you trust him on anything?

Ford puts the ten commandments on the back of his personal campaign business card.

He is using his ability to "speak christian" to go after conservative voters who can be fooled.

This reminds me of clinton visiting churches (and totally disrupting the church so he can have his "I man holy" photo op.)

Corker the moderat is not exciting, he was not really the best choice, but in a 3 way race he won over the conservatives, because the weakest of the 2 refused to drop out. Your guess is as good as mine on this one. We can only hope and pray that JUNIOR looses, considering his age, the Ford machine we could be looking at 4 decades of him before he bequeaths his seat to one of his offspring.

This is a very long article in today's Comic Appeal.

Ford also finds time to party

According to the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call, Ford attended last year's Playboy Super Bowl Party in Jacksonville, Fla., and took several trips paid for by corporate interests, including jaunts to Las Vegas, Vail, the Virgin Islands, Orlando and Miami. In all, more than 60 trips between 1998 and 2003.

In December 2000, Pegasus Airwave, a medical supply company in Boca Raton, Fla., paid $1,978 so that Ford could attend a company Christmas party.

In 2000 and 2001, Pegasus paid Ford's father's company $1.1 million to lobby on its behalf.

The younger Ford's dating life is an active, but quieter affair.

He met Julia Baugher, a Georgetown University sophmore and sex columnist while celebrating his 31st birthday at Paolo's, a restaurant in Washington. Baugher, who once kept a copy of Ford's "50 Most Beautiful People" photo on her desk, was soon involved in a whirlwind romance with the congressman.

"It was a bit surreal," she said. "I struggled to understand exactly what it was that he saw in me when he could have had any woman in D.C. .... I mean when I'm talking about spring break, he's talking about meeting with the President."

Baugher and Ford's nonexclusive courtship ended abruptly when a 2003 Washington Post article mentioned their relationship. "He never called me after that article," said Baugher, who wrote about their relationship in Cosmo and went on to pen a popular sex and dating column for a New York daily after graduating. "It's all water under the bridge."

Here's an answer to your question..I trust Bill Hobbs he was one of the leaders in the fight against the income tax. There are links in the short article.

Bill Hobbs

Don't Fall For It

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee put out a press release claiming the national Republican Party is "pulling out" of Tennessee, abandoning the "flagging" Bob Corker campaign. Don't believe it. The press release is designed to demoralize the Corker campaign and depress GOP turnout, but my sources tell me you will be seeing an increasingly aggressive TV and radio ad blitz for Corker, featuring a couple of the Tennessee GOP's biggest stars.

Harold Ford Jr. peaked two weeks ago - although the Corker campaign certainly needs to be on guard and ready for the attack that will surely come from the Ford campaign and their allies in the mainstream Tennessee media in the last two weeks of the campaign. Sharp pencils, anyone?

Harold Ford never met a camera he didn't like. I've never seen him at an event WITHOUT a camera trailing him, and I've seen him many times. I am 100% certain there are pictures of him with Playboy bunnies somwehere out there.

He also held a fundraiser at Jack Abramoff's restaurant if anyone cares to look it up. Mr. Ford is quite "bipartisan" in that regard.
