For 14 hours, Mireya Jimenez listened to the squalling from the filthy back yard next door, her heart aching for what she thought was a frightened kitten.
Stricken to learn it was actually a newborn boy whod miraculously survived an entire night in a garbage bag as temperatures hovered near 40 degrees, the trembling 53-year-old grandmother of 13 could only shake her head in disbelief.
Shes very emotional, said Mili Arias, Jimenez 14-year-old granddaughter. She feels guilty.
Boston police were anxious to speak to anyone who knew a woman near the end of her pregnancy - who now cant account for her child - after yesterday mornings appalling discovery in Roslindale of a discarded day-old white or Hispanic infant.
Authorities have named him Baby Jordan.
The naked nursling, whod been covered with a powder-blue towel and stuffed in an open black trash bag, the placenta still attached, was found at 11:14 a.m. in brush behind 63 Bradeen St., a two-family house vacant since a fire there on Jan. 25.
This is crazy, said 15-year-old Janet Clark, who assumed cops were recovering a firearm. Its a sin to leave a baby out to freeze to death.
The state Department of Social Services took emergency custody of Baby Jordan, who was in very, very critical condition in the pediatric intensive-care unit of Childrens Hospital, DSS spokeswoman Denise Monteiro said.
Detectives canvassed the Bradeen Street neighborhood and a Boston police German shepherd followed what appeared to be a promising trail from the bag to the nearby Florence Apartments. The trail went cold.
Jimenez said she first heard Baby Jordans cries at 9:30 Saturday night, but did not investigate until yesterday morning.
She thought it was a cat. She loves animals, Arias said, interpreting for her grandmother. She wanted to find the cat so she could rescue it.
Separated from the piercing mewling by a chain-link fence, Jimenez enlisted the help of her neighbor Graciela Avendano. Avendano called her 46-year-old son Edwin down from a ladder to investigate.
After seeing the moving trash bag, a worried Edwin Avendano called 911, then peeled back the plastic flaps and saw Baby Jordan.
It was like, Gasp! Gasp! It was crying, neighbor Leidy Pena, 10, said, interpreting for a shaken Graciela Avendano. She said it was cold and white, but she wanted to keep the baby.
I thought that this was a dreadful event, and I only wish that I could have posted it myself.
However, it seems that my contributions are only welcome under certain limitations.
Poor little fellow. What a terrible beginning. I hope he never finds out about this. May God bless him, protect him, and comfort him.
The baby's parents should be subjected to the same inhumane torture.
Rich people get nice clinics (the cockroaches are just another aspect of the terrific service environment). Poor people just expose their unwanted children. Fair's fair, y'know, AND it saves us all money. That baby could have grown up to be a Dumbocrat or other life- and rights- despising criminal.
Okay, maybe I'm a little irritated here, and that always makes me just SEW judgmental! .....
That doesn't sound right to me. Heck, they let me post stuff. LOL. Can't be too many restrictions. Did you try to post this article and not have it go through?
Well, thank God that Mrs. Jiminez was so worried about the crying she thought was a kitten that she continued to think about the crying and enlisted friends and neighbors to investigate until they found the baby and got him help. Baby Jordan has several guardian angels, and he's lucky to be alive.
Praise to God that this infant survived the night. It chokes me up thinking about it. He will be in my prayers.
Seems that a bit more concern for animals could have saved this human baby from 14 hours of misery, and quite likely brain damage and/or death after a short life spent shivering in the cold and then punctured with needles and hooked up to lots of tubes and wires.
Mass is a Safe Haven state...the mother could have walked into ANY fire station, police station, or hospital and handed the baby over without any questions being asked. There is absolutely NO excuse for a child to be abandoned like this. If they find the mother, she needs to be charged with attempted murder. If the baby dies, execute her.
A . . . GASP . . . "sin"??? This child needs to be put into PC re-education classes!
Maybe she's Mrs. Mad Ivan?
Perhaps they've finally instituted a long overdue measure preventing new registrants from starting threads. FR is constantly bombarded by idiotic thread-starting vanities posted by trolls who register over and over again under different names. I doubt it's anything personal. You could e-mail Admin Moderator for an explanation.
Just look at your home page --Congratus to you and MadIvan!
Make an honest man out of him.....
I have a better idea: put a cork in it (don't get pregnant).
This is terrible. I don't know how someone could live with themselves after doing this.
