Baby Jordanís chilling first night
Boston Herald ^ | October 16, 2006 | Laurel J. Sweet

For 14 hours, Mireya Jimenez listened to the squalling from the filthy back yard next door, her heart aching for what she thought was a frightened kitten.

Stricken to learn it was actually a newborn boy who’d miraculously survived an entire night in a garbage bag as temperatures hovered near 40 degrees, the trembling 53-year-old grandmother of 13 could only shake her head in disbelief.

“She’s very emotional,” said Mili Arias, Jimenez’ 14-year-old granddaughter. “She feels guilty.”

Boston police were anxious to speak to anyone who knew a woman near the end of her pregnancy - who now can’t account for her child - after yesterday morning’s appalling discovery in Roslindale of a discarded day-old white or Hispanic infant.

Authorities have named him Baby Jordan.

The naked nursling, who’d been covered with a powder-blue towel and stuffed in an open black trash bag, the placenta still attached, was found at 11:14 a.m. in brush behind 63 Bradeen St., a two-family house vacant since a fire there on Jan. 25.

“This is crazy,” said 15-year-old Janet Clark, who assumed cops were recovering a firearm. “It’s a sin to leave a baby out to freeze to death.”

The state Department of Social Services took emergency custody of Baby Jordan, who was in “very, very critical condition” in the pediatric intensive-care unit of Children’s Hospital, DSS spokeswoman Denise Monteiro said.

Detectives canvassed the Bradeen Street neighborhood and a Boston police German shepherd followed what appeared to be a promising trail from the bag to the nearby Florence Apartments. The trail went cold.

Jimenez said she first heard Baby Jordan’s cries at 9:30 Saturday night, but did not investigate until yesterday morning.

“She thought it was a cat. She loves animals,” Arias said, interpreting for her grandmother. “She wanted to find the cat so she could rescue it.”

Separated from the piercing mewling by a chain-link fence, Jimenez enlisted the help of her neighbor Graciela Avendano. Avendano called her 46-year-old son Edwin down from a ladder to investigate.

After seeing the moving trash bag, a worried Edwin Avendano called 911, then peeled back the plastic flaps and saw Baby Jordan.

“It was like, ‘Gasp! Gasp!’ It was crying,” neighbor Leidy Pena, 10, said, interpreting for a shaken Graciela Avendano. “She said it was cold and white, but she wanted to keep the baby.”

"May God bless him, protect him, and comfort him."

And may God keep this poor baby's biological mother away from him.

I just fear this will be one of those cases where the woman has a change of heart in two or three years and decides she wants "another chance."

“It’s a sin to leave a baby out to freeze to death.”

A sin, yes. And it's a crime. And the DSS will eventually track down the mother and "reunite them" instead of urging prosecution and making sure the baby never gets within 1000 yards of the beast who bore her.

It's both a sin and a crime to do such a thing.

Rich people get nice clinics (the cockroaches are just another aspect of the terrific service environment).

MassHealth (state medicaid) covers abortion for poor people. No excuse.

(I know you weren't making one -- just putting it out there.)

I once read an 1870's newspaper account about a rural California blacksmith and his wife who woke one morning to the sound of a baby crying in a basket on their porch.

No one knew who the mother could be -- there were no women "in the family way" in the village. It was thought the woman had surreptitiously selected the blacksmith's house, knowing the couple did not have children.

The paper reported that the blacksmith could be heard singing, "It's good to be a father" while he fashioned a cradle.

The event was seen as a good omen by the entire community.

this is a symptom of a society that does not value human life. Abortion was just the beginning. We're into the second generation of Americans who've never known a time in their lives that it wasn't legal to kill a segment of the population.

When abortion is offered to us as a sign that we are becoming MORE civilized, advanced, tolerant, and, gosh darn it, people like us now, now that we kill babies ... it just seems to me so obvious that the promises are bogus when along with government sponsored infanticide, we get all these amateur efforts, and, as I say, end up with children exposed as Oedipus was.

Similarly, back when I thoroughly endorsed the concept of Artificial Birth Control, one of the great arguments was, fewer unwanted children, less bastardy. But what actually happened?

We develop "no fault divorce" in hopes that one can shed a spouse more easily than one can rid oneself of unwanted pounds. And now we are told that of couples living together, those who are married (to one another, not to some other party to be named later) are not in the majority.

Leaving aside other forms of moral analysis, when ALL the promises of the social liberals prove wrong, why do we have to continue to pretend that they are saying something credible?
