Foley mess and GOP are a match made in heaven
New York Daily News ^ | October 17, 2006 | Richard Cohen

Posted on 10/17/2006 12:34:22 PM PDT by presidio9

'On the nose" is a Hollywood expression. It refers to a scene or a piece of dialogue that is too obvious or too good to be true. Hollywood would have said the whole Mark Foley sex scandal is on the nose. Let's start with the fact that this confessed gay stalker of teenage congressional pages was co-chairman of the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus. All over Hollywood, fingers would go to the tip of the nose: Can't we make it Armed Services? No, we cannot. To change anything at all about the Foley matter would be to trifle with its vacuity, its reliance on bigotry and ignorance, its Beaver Cleaver qualities (congressional pages, for crying out loud!) and, not the least, the fact that so far this is the ultimate Washington sex scandal: There is no sex.

Maybe some page will be discovered to have had sex with Foley, but so far this has not happened. This total lack of a physical victim may explain why certain GOP congressional bulls did not bolt from the joint, pulling every alarm on the way out. Foley was creepy and appallingly inappropriate, but so far that seems to be it.

The lamentable lack of a victim hardly gets noticed as politicians coil their ropes, measuring Foley or some other poor chap for a proper lynching. Dennis Hastert should have known. George Bush should have known. Karl Rove should have known. How come this did not come up on one of those unconstitutional wiretaps? Did anyone in the House leadership think of waterboarding Foley? The man was gay, after all.

That, too, is on the nose. That this happened to the GOP is too, too much. It is no longer the party of Lincoln, but of gay-bashing. Its base is among those who embrace ignorance of homosexuality and, while they are at it, ignorance of sexual matters in general.

It was the GOP that cozied up to churches and preachers who likened homosexuals to the vilest people of all times and called on them to cease their wicked ways. To this sort of demagoguery, the leaders of the GOP have not just merely looked away, they have encouraged it.

So it is not possible now to call the whole thing off. It is not possible even to suggest that all those kids are not 8-year-olds, but American teenagers, probably none of them sexually naive. In all likelihood, nothing Foley messaged the poor dears was entirely new to them, and it's even possible to argue that, no matter what, psychological trauma is not likely to follow.

The abuse of trust is no laughing matter and the corruption of children is in a class by itself. But a sex scandal-cum-political panic involving just one person lacks a certain something. That it has attained such critical mass, that it threatens the speaker of the House and the GOP majority says little about the repellent Foley and more about how the GOP has hoisted itself on its own petard. It's on the nose all right, but sometimes so is life itself.

Question #1: When have the Republican ever been guilty of "gay-bashing?"

Question #2: If the Mark Foley thing is such a big deal, why didn't Gary Condit ruin the Democrat Party for a decade?

No, I think it says that the MSM knows that sex scandals repel conservatives so this is a good issue to harp on and blow out of all proportion to depress the Repub vote.

The most amusing thing about liberal columnists is that they are generally so confused and hung up about sex that they think its the ultimate insult to accuse us of being confused and hung up about sex. Which is why there can be a liberal sex scandal once a week for a year, but every time there is a conservative sex scandal they pitch a tent.

What is more "on the nose" is that the 'Rats, the party of Bill Clinton, Gerry Studds, and Barney Fwank, a veritable Rogue's Gallery of sexual perverts, has absolutely no moral authority to sit in judgment of Republicans on the Foley matter. Mark Foley resigned, as he should have, and that ended the matter. If he had not, the Republican leadership would have kicked him out, as they should. Contrast that with the 'Rats, who covered for Clinton and Studds and Frank. Barney Frank is still around and is lionized as a leader in the 'Rat party, as is Clinton. Studds was re-elected five separate times and never once apologized for liquoring up and raping an underage male page. Until the 'Rats acknowledge the perversion within their own ranks, their self-righteous cries of indignation over the Foley matter ring awfully hollow.

What political party has been trying to legitamize the homosexual agenda for the last ten years or so? Again that would be the Democraps, however when it involves a REPUBLICAN politician, all of a sudden these two-faced maggots find God right !!!

A match made in heaven. Or selectively redacted by DNC dirty tricks operatives so as to make it appear to be something it was not.

And the yellow journalists in the media exposed this October Surprise for their Democrat masters. Too bad their little time bomb went off too early, was debunked and the lies exposed, and in the end, the media pulled the plug before we got to the bottom of which Democrats knew of this behavior and when they knew it.

Depends on what your definition of sex is.

To the media, Congressman Foley had cyber-sex which is just like the real thing.

But Bill Clinton's oral sex with an aide was not really sex.

And today, kids will tell you that they are still pure because oral sex isn't sex.

But they might have to rethink their online sex talk with their peers.

Im sorry. I dont buy it. I find it hard to believe that conservatives would actually consider the Foley "scandal" or whatever it is to be a "republican" weakness. The media is using the issue to try to claim that republicans will stay home hoping others will follow out of discouragement.

If anything it's a democrat type scandal by one who happens to be republican. Democrats call themselves the party for gays. Democrats are for gay-marriage. Democrats are for lowering the age of consent.

If the democrats had their way, Foley could invite your 14 year old son to dinner, have him spend the night, confuse him and end up wanting to marry him. And once you complain, Foley would be able to sue you for a hate-crime, take your house and you will end up on the streets and Foley and his husband (your son) living in your home.

That's what the democrats stand for.

The bigoted Democrats have known that Foley was a homosexual as did many Republicans. He was never public about his sexual preference.

The bigots Dems thought they could manipulate the Conservative Christian base that they blame recent election losses on ("Same sex marriage was a play to the bigotry of the Conservative Christians" including church going Democrat minorities who are put off by homosexuality).

They knew that it could make headlines if they alledged child abuse and solicitation. They knew that it would still carry the same bite for the base if in the end he was just a homosexual who almost had sex with his aides.

But Congress and the press has been entirely hypocritical about this. They have gone witch hunting for Republicans even AFTER Foley left. Elections do not matter to the Left. Power by any means DOES.

This entire "scandal" has been a fraud from the beginning. Carefully saved up by Soros minions, if illegalities had occured, then they would have been accomplices, and liable for prosecutiton also. But, so far I haven't seen any evidence of law breaking, or cover up for that matter. But the fraud patrol of the Democrat Party and idiots that suck up and regurgitate their offal are in standard form,... lying.

The Republican leadership was actually over-concerned and sensitive to accusations of "gay bashing" and so they tastefully and wisely handled this behind the scenes. The harassment ended, and they thought that would be the end of it all. They didn't count on the hypocritical Democrats though, who now decry anything even mentioning gay sex as "child molestation".

Doubtless Barney Frank is biting his lip and is looking the other way, as other foolish gay advocates take the bait, like Andrew Sullivan, and do the work of the Democrats. Remember that Gerry Studds was censured by the House, but defiantly did not resign his post, despite the fact that he actually committed the crime Foley only typed about.

The Democrat House leadership feigned disgust, then proceeded to give him a committee chairmanship, and allow him to be reelected 5 more times.

Cohen is feeble minded if his confused conclusions fail to take this into account, and of course he does fail. Par for his course.

Question #3: When will Richard Cohen notice that he is the servile butt-boy for the party of Gerry Stubbs, Mel Reynolds, Bill Clinton, Barney Frank, Gary Condit, etc. etc.?

Demagogues are awfully gleeful about one creepy dude who (so far as is known) did not go beyond his nasty IMs, while the Demagogues embrace and protect those who actually do abuse all sorts of "vulnerable" people in gross "abuse of trust"......

Say, Richard Cohen, which party kept Stubbs and Frank in Congress for so long, and which President commuted the prison sentence of Mel Reynolds?

Other than being mildly annoyed that Cohen thinks he has to tell me what "on the nose" means--I stress "mildly," because I don't really care what any liberal Democrat thinks--the only thing I get out of this column is that a homosexual should not be allowed on the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus, should not be allowed to become a Scout leader, should not be allowed to adopt. Somehow, I doubt if that's the message Dick was hoping to impart.

I remember a program on PBS (Frontline?) where Reno prosecuted child abuse cases (3 cases were covered). Some maybe over agressively.

In one, a juvenile defendent was to be sentenced to prison as an adult. Wonder how long he was in before HE was raped. I guess that child rape is okay as long as it occurs in prison.

And she waved the scare of child abuse in whipping up hysteria over Waco. And then she burned the building down (certainly by denying the firetrucks access to put OUT the fire) and possibly by agents firing on women and children trying to leave.

I think the computer graphic thing hinges on prosecutors not wanting to have to prove what is legitimate or fake. It is lazy prosecution.

Exactly. It's not about their outrage, because they aren't outraged. They just know conservatives will be. So they feign outrage. It's a game they have played for years, they are experts at it. Only this time, they think it will cause all those nasty values voters to stay home.

I prefer to think it will drive them there even more so than 2004 did. Simply because not to vote, would to allow the Dems to manipulate us. Conservatives are not that gullible, in fact we are are far more informed than any dem.

Mia T has a good competing theory about that. She thinks the Mark Foley thing was a Clinton "October surprise" all the way (the Flyntish smell is familiar).

Only when Slick started getting bad reviews on his Chris Wallace/Fox interview about his non-handling of terrorism, he realized he was imperiling Beast's run for the '08 coronation, so they decided to launch the "surprise" a few weeks early in order to change the subject.

Bottom line: More media-management by the Klintonx.

I must say, the theory has its attractions.
